New Show: "Beyond Survival" with Les Stroud...

It certainly would have been nice to see more one the traps manufacturing and some more on the sling shot.

However, it was a great show that will raise awareness of cultures that are being squeezed out.

Watched about 10 minutes of it. Les is way too melodramatic for me.

After his voice over for the intro (Beyoooooond survival) my wife just rolled her eyes and walked into the other room. I stuck it out for awhile, ending up muting it because I couldn't stand Les' narration, and then just ended up shutting it off.

I've noticed it in his other show(the one where he thinks he's the comic book hero Survivorman), the Les likes to tell the audience how much danger he's in. There could be sharks here, I could die. There could be elephants here, I could die. If I don't make it over the next hill, I could die.

Just get's old for me and not very exciting.

I think, Varg, they do this so eco-tourists don't say 'If Les can go there and be fine - so can I!'

I think it gets repetitive, but I think the survival people have been trying to save people lives through their advice for so long that it is ingrained in them to warn people of the dangers of what they are doing.

Think he could have spent more time with primitive skills and less with the dance stuff. Good show but I think people that watch it are interested in survivalish stuff - not anthropology.
I agree. It seemed like the whole dance/culture stuff took up the entire hour. Definetely would have liked to seen more of that slingshot!

I watched it, its good to see Les back in action, but it made me long for the Les of old. I will watch it some more, but I see myself losing interest fast. Thanks. Moose

I think the show is supposed to be about the cultures, and not about the skills as much. Its not Survivorman. The religious practices are very much a part of life in these tribes.

Its amazing to me how people can ding a show stating Les is mellodramitic, but then can praise a show that is waaaaay more geared to the Drama. Les did all his camerawork in this one as usual. No crews, and stupid stunts for ratings. Had his documentary style to it. Id watch this any day of the week over that tool Bear, or the liar Canteburry....

Differant strokes I suppose.

I like the anthropology aspect, so I think I will really enjoy this one. I had no idea it was on last night though, doh!

Jwilliams is right, bear grylls is all about drama, it's 10 times worse for that then Les is. I don't want to turn this into another Les vs. Bear thread but it really boggles the mind to think some people like Bear Grylls.

My first thought is that it's going beyond mere survival (hence the title), and going in to how they live.

We were about to turn the episode into a drinking game - a drink each time he said the word "demon". I'd have been out after the first 15 minutes. ;)

I didn't enjoy the show as much as I did "Survivorman", but it's still better than 'The Kardashians".

I doubt he lied about anything he said. I believe others just misinterpreted how it was presented. The internet can be deceiving on info presented.

As far as the show. I liked it, but more skills would have definitely been better.

Im not gettin into it. I drew my conclusions, others are free to draw their own. Feel free to email me if ya want. Notice they changed the info in the Dual Survivor intro?

From what I read, it was a matter or DC overblowing what he did in the military.

Here's an excerpt from another board:

1. Over 20 years of Combined Military and Civilian Survival: No survival training annotated in military records.
2. US Military Veteran 1981-1988: Dates of Service: 12/03/1981 to 11/25/1987. That is just under 6 years, not 7.
3. Airborne: FALSE
4. Sniper: Not US Army Sniper. He DID attend a local 4th ID Sniper/Counter-Sniper Class (2 wks - 1986).
5. Scout: FALSE. He only attended the Law Enforcement 95B Course. He was an MP ONLY, not a 19D Scout.
6. SRT Member: He did attend the local 4th ID Course (2 wks – 1986), but there is no record of him being on SRT, per his Assignment Record.
7. SRT Coordinator and Instructor: He could have been a coordinator, but until doctrine changed in 1993 (after he was out), you had to be an E-6 (SSG) in order to be an instructor. Canterbury never attained this rank.
8. Performed Security Escorts for Military Equipment in Korea for Specialized Equipment to Forward areas near the DMZ between North and South Korea 1983-85: According to his military record, while stationed in South Korea, he was an “ID Badge Clerk.”
9. Squad Leader 4th ID 1982-1983: Not unless they make Privates squad leaders.
10. Ranger: FALSE
11. Instructor in Close Quarters Combat in US, Central America and Korea: See #7 & #8.

Looking at the spin, it looks like he might have padded his resume a bit to get some "street cred" to get started. But that fact is, if you watch his stuff, you can tell he knows what he's doing, whether or not it's what you'd do.

Me? I'll evaluate him based on what I see, not his past or what someone else thinks of him.

If he lied about military experiance, he is the lowest form of life IMO. Speaking from 5 generations of soldiers, and me as a Scout (19D). Thats all im sayin. Appologies to the OP. This is about Les, not Dave.

Back to the subject at hand:

I think think is a good show (after watching it on youtube) because:
1.) How many times can you really watch a guy survive in the [Insert Climate]?
2.) There's more to life than survival, primitive living is a much larger topic.
3.) Seeing the culture gives insight into WHY these people do things, not just how. That gives you some more to grind away at in your head. You may not be in the same situation, so just because [insert favorite primitive culture] does things a certain way, does not mean it's a good idea for you to do them that way.

Plus, I doubt we'll have to endure much pee drinking on this show. :D

No joke....I agree 100%. The formula of the Survival genre of entertainment is well in need of a tweak to the formula IMO. This is it. I really enjoy seeing the skills that have sustained these groups for centuries. I cant imagine how it must have felt to be sitting there. In the moment. Unreal.
