New Show: "Beyond Survival" with Les Stroud...

I found Les Stroud's new show interesting. I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the sling shot bow and its effectiveness. Maybe I missed the part where they actually used it for something?

Blowing bees. Okay. I wonder if they chanted while they did it?

There are a number of survival shows and this one is presented in a different vein. Hopefully it is a good idea. Will watch this coming week if I remember.

I like Les, and the premise of the new show is interesting, but the "noble savage" sensationalism would have been embarrassing a hundred years ago. Really obnoxious.

We were about to turn the episode into a drinking game - a drink each time he said the word "demon". I'd have been out after the first 15 minutes. QUOTE]

You should do a drinking game where you drink each time someone puts down Bear in a Les Stroud thread. You would be passed out even faster. :D

The Les supporters always mention that he does his own camera work,(as if that's a determining factor in how good the show is????) but in this show he has a camera crew.

It's all about what you are looking for when watching a show. I'm looking for entertainment, not instruction. Hence, I like Man vs. Wild, Dual Surivival, and Man, Woman Wild.

I'm sure that there are a lot of people on this board that like Bear, but are too scared to admit it on here because they will be attacked and ridiculed.

But who cares what other people like? Why do people care what I like to watch?

Watch what you like and don't watch what you don't like.

It's late. I'm going home and sleep with my wife.:D

If he lied about military experiance, he is the lowest form of life IMO. Speaking from 5 generations of soldiers, and me as a Scout (19D). Thats all im sayin. Appologies to the OP. This is about Les, not Dave.

I can't discredit the knowledge (on whatever level, but probably more than me) he has in bushcraft/survival, but I do know from watching his videos and conversing with him online, that his claimed military and law enforcement experience is highly over exaggerated. I criticized him pretty heavily when he started doing instructional videos about firearms and tactics. He seemed to take that to heart (probably from other people criticizing him also) and went back to just bushcraft topics.

Whatever you have to say about Hawke and his show, at least his is the real deal (military special forces experience).

I’m enjoying Les’ show…it is less (or beyond?) about survival, but interesting none the less. I don’t watch a whole lot of TV (just no time), but (thank God for DVR:D), I enjoy all of these shows (including Bear).

Sad to hear about Dave’s embellished credentials. I don’t know why people do that, but I’ve seen in the Army quite a bit. I have done several schools and training sessions that aren’t in my records, but they’re not something I’d ever put in a resume or even brag about. I respect those that serve (including law enforcement, firefighters and EMT’s); but I just don’t see a need to tarnish your service by embellishing your record with stuff that isn’t true or even stretched. There use to be a lot of pressure in some units where if your chest or shoulder didn’t have certain “qualifications”, you were initially below par on credibility. I’ve been there and if you learn to keep your pride in your pocket and just perform, you’ll earn credibility.

It’s funny though, I have a good friend that has truly BTDT and was enlisted in SF and commissioned in Infantry. He doesn’t brag about it (the true professionals never do) and he has more training than I thought possible in the area we call “survival”. What’s funny is that he has no desire in recreational camping, backpacking and wouldn’t even consider a week of civilian “survival training” as enjoyable! I look at somebody like Dave Canterbury and he is obviously very talented and passionate about survival, however false credibility will always bite you in the ass eventually. I still respect his service and will watch the show, but it pains me a little to hear about some obviously false statements. If it’s not in your records, it’s informal or unit training…nothing wrong with that, but it’s something that needs to be clarified before making statements about your service record.

Sorry, I’ll get off the soap box and back to Les. What I do like about Les is that he doesn’t have some high-speed, low-drag background, just a love of the outdoors and he has built his career and reputation on extremely hard work and passion (like the others, just without the initial “ex-SF/Army/SAS” whatever career). I’m looking forward to his new show; it’s different, but he narrates well it is entertaining.

I enjoyed watching this first episode. The tribesmen he was with look no different than some of the people living around here as well as many forumites here. People havn't changed that much since the stone age.
