New Smith revolver

Well regardless of the debate you got a really good quality piece that will stop a perp permanently. Hope you never are forced to use it but glad to know there are good citizens carrying quality equipment.

WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!

I have this one, it is a 340PD, the hammerless version. I opted for it due to safety reasons. I agree, these light J-frames are the cat's meow for a CCW but they kick like a mule!

Maybe I have it all wrong, but if you carry concealed, wouldn;t you want it to be a gun you fire often in practice and are totally comfortable with? I just don't (personally) want a range pistol and a carry pistol that are way different.

That BUG can be a different story but I'd suggest a lot of time firing it in practice as well.

Just one man's opinion.

well. hmmm. let's see. i carried glocks for 2 years, then i got a smith revolver, then it beat all of them out for carry. how did it beat them out? well i just choose to carry it over the glocks. why do i? pick your favorite reason marty. it is lighter, more powerful, easier to conceal, revolvers are more reliable than autos, better trigger, doesnt print, 5 shots is all i need, ummm, are any of these suffice?

and to the guy who said he cant a difference in ballistics in a .357 magnum and a 9mm..... first of all, :jerkit: . secondly, you seriously need to open your eyes. the trajectory alone is faster. the penetration is deeper. but i guess some people swear by the 9.

the trajectory is faster?? huh?? i think ya mean velocity, right?? the penetration is deeper according to whom??

whats the diff between a 125gr at probably ~1250 to a 124gr at ~1150?? not very much.

a 357SIG blows a 357Mag away in the velocity area FWIW.

with modern ammo the difference between the 2 is small, if any.

i have several autos which have never malfunctioned, not ever, a glock 32C and 33 to name 2, to get a modern auto to run correctly with good ammo isnt a trick, do ya think cops would be going to autos in the 90% range if they figured they were issueing "jamamatics" lol???

as a backup gun, it would only be deployed if the primary weapon is broken, taken, in the process of being taken, pinned against a wall/car/whatever, all primary mags have been emptied. among the most common reasons, anyway.

and it should be practiced with, as with any tool one carries.

the problem you mention is the line between concealment and effectiveness. someone carrying concealed is not expecting to have to use their gun, (unlike a peace officer, who should always be expecting to use their gun), but rather wants to be prepared for an incident requiring self defense.

each person must decide what will suit them and what characteristics are important, ie: weight, size, overall concealability, etc.

Funny after all this I walked into one of my local gun shops today and boom there is a small pocket 357 sitting there. It had maybe a box fired through it. This gun has a little longer barrel (2 1/4") and is a little bit more heavy than the air weight guns (25 oz but this really tames the recoil). I prefer the weight of the heavier gun in this size. The grip is probably about 1" longer which is better cause I have large hands. After all this talk I got to really thinking about this small gun. My bersa 380 is to underpowered in my book but is about as easy to conceal as this gun. So I figured when I was going to very low threat area I will carry this in a pocket. When I feel I am going to a bad area I will carry it as a backup to my Sig 229 357 sig. Well they only wanted $350.00 so I put it on layaway.

Behold the Ruger SP101 357 Magnum.

sniper, wow thats funny!

today at work, i showed like 3 people this EXACT gun. I am astonished at how heavy it is in comparison to my SW360PD.... talk about weight differences!!

I am going to try and order the SW340M&P tomorrow if the boss is there when i am there. I missed him today and my paycheck... nice gun though man!!! what kinda experience have you fellas had with Ruger revolvers?

I used to get into gun debates (caliber, ammo, etc.) all the time. Now, I'm just happy that there are other good citizens exercising their constitutional rights. It makes me feel safer. I'm sure your Smith is a fine piece of equipment, and if you're happy with it, more power to you!!!!

I enjoy my 340PD however be forewarned of the recoil. The difference to shooting it and my 686 or Ruger GP100 is night and day. One little suggestion I may have for you is to trim your fingernails prior to going to the range. Your fingernails WILL dig into your thumb when you fire it. It takes some getting used to and I used thin leather gloves for a while at the range.

I have a DeSantis pocket holster and wearing Dockers (with those large front pockets) are the perfect combination. Even the Dockers shorts work well in the summer time.

It is the most pleasant firearm I have had the pleasure to carry, one to hang on to when you shoot it. I looked at the one you are looking at at the Smith&Wesson website and the larger Crimson Trace grips will help a lot.

I feel the same way. It sure lowers the BG's odds.

The perps (Bad Guy = BJ) odds. I new somebody would try and turn it around. It is funny though.
Umm, I'm not the greatest at this whole spelling thing, BUT Bad Guy= BG. Bad Juy=BJ. BJ=what I no longer get since I got seperated.:(

Wow you couldnt find another way to make me feel stupider. All right 24hrs with out sleep and now after to much beer I got to stop before I look any stupider if that is possible. I must have been thinking about what I wanted when I get home. :D. Thanks for wakeing me up Marty.

What, no MP5K?

I carry a .22 WMR . . . my "backup" weapon is a knife . . . more likely to use the knife unless the attacker is twice my size or has a handgun of his own.

I cant legally carry a knife that has an overall length of around 6" or longer so that rules out carrying my Tigershark or seal 2000. I can carry lots of lead particle accelerators though. Stupid laws.

Marty - my EMPATHY my brother. I lost my B____:mad: or gf (she used to be called) after 3 years. I feel your pain. Oh well, time to get back out there and reel another fine lady in. I find myself going back to an old girl in my past prior to my X. I just need a new girl I think.... ahhhhh.

Back to the revolvers fellas.

I always favored revolvers to carry but I have semi auto Glocks and my Springfield and now a Seecamp 32 SW on the way that I have been trying to find for ten years.

I have a couple of small revolvers I got before the Smith 32. One is an old Rossi 357 Mag with the three inch barrel and rear sight. Its always been a real sweet shooter. My other is a newer Rossi/Taurus in the same caliber thats the snubby barrel and only the front ramp sight. It has that locking hammer pin thing going for it though which was the reason I bought it.

I really like both of these but they are just too heavy for me to carry comfortably. Both are six shot revolvers. My Glock 36 is the same way. Super nice shooter, a bit of a challenge to keep hold of at times maybe but nice its just too heavy to carry. As a result I keep going with what I can comfortablly use that still has some knock down power if you need it. I think the 32 H&R Mag AirLite Ti six shot revolver is something anyone that sees will mistake for a 357 Mag at first glance so in the back of my mind it was always something I had hoped if I ever did have to use it. 357 Mag is a caliber that has one of those reputations that preceeds it so much that it instills fear in those that have one pointed at them from what I've read so it seemed viable.
