The building my smithy is in went on the market this week.

That means I have a lot of heavy stuff that needs to be moved.:(

The dozer was here last week and we got the site leveled for the new building.

The new smithy will be a 24x32 foot insulated pole building :) with a lot of natural light.:)

Along with the new shop I have decided to have a new logo made to go with it.

The pine tree and moon logo is the same as the stamp used on my sheaths.

Give me your impressions on the new logo, if you would.

Burton Knives is handling the logo design.

I think the moon may look better/more realistic if it were higher and behind the tree.

That is a good point. But!
In actuality; I live on the highest point in Washington co. and this is how the moon looks behind the tree pictured when it rises.
Thanks for your comments, Fred

Very cool logo Fred. No need to go higher with the moon but I do agree with 69 that it would look better to have the moon behind the branches of the tree.

Congrats on the new shop to be. I know it's a lot of work but, it will be worth it in the end.

Nevermind the logo this is a perfect opportunity for a workshop WIP thread. Maybe even forum input/suggestions on shop layout, design, storage solutions or whatever.

i'd have to agree with the logo....i wouldn't have probably known it was a moon if u didn't say.....looks way too low to me....good luck with the new shop!....ryan

Fred,
Just an idea here but I'd try moving the tree just slightly to the left, increase the size of the moon a tad, and put the moon in the backround.

My thought being that it would seem a little more balanced if the amount of sky to the left of the tree and the right of the moon were a little more equal without so much open sky on the left side.

Either way it's a great logo, simple and classy!

Fred; what if you don't use the full moon?

Mike

That is a very relevant question.

I am committed to the design, pictured, for several reasons.

I have been using the logo on my sheaths for eight or nine years and I want the blade stamp to look the same.

The logo pictured is a mirror image of the Shuri Ryu karate logo; I taught the style for twelve years.
So the symbol itself holds a great deal of meaning for me. I loved the karate and I now enjoy making knives with the same heartfelt passion.

It looks odd to American eyes, I think, because the origin is Okinawan.
They were into impressionist stylizing at that time.:D

I think the comments, show, the vast majority would draw it differently, which I myself would do, if I were starting from scratch.
Since I am bound, for reasons stated above, to use the pictured tree and orb:) I can only hope that its oddity, will one day make me famous.:D

I'll post photos of one of the logos on a blade when I do the first.

Thanks for your post guys.

Karl did a good job on your logo Fred.Good luck finding help moving all that heavy stuff.:jerkit::D

The logo is unique to you. Leave it as is, in my opinion. Nobody will mistake it for someone elses logo.

I have your phone number.:thumbup::D

The sunfish, Don Hanson uses is quit unique and is not easily confused with any other logo.
My wish with this logo was for it to be simple and distinguishable; as you say unique to the maker is the goal.

Bob Loveless makers mark also comes to mind; the reclining nude lady.:D

I appreciate your post guys.

i love dons sun fish, its great.

I'm happy for ya about the new shop except you have to move everything into it. Protect your back.
I think the logo is cool now that I hear the story about it. I wonder how it will look with your name silver instead of the usual etched black though. Your logo etches around the letters instead of etching the letters themselves. Know what I'm saying? May be really cool that way.

Fred,
I like the logo as is. The oriental styling looks good.
Interestingly, I studied shorin ryu about 40 years ago under sensei Smith, who was at that time the only USA 7th dan, IIRC. I don't know if you know that the name (shorin) for Okinawan karate comes from the old Okinawan language, and means "Shaolin" . It thus translates as "small forest". I would assume shuri is some form of that word, perhaps americanized?

Good news on the new shop, but lots of work ahead.
Stacy
