Bugs, you don't have to go directly to Post Reply and forget what you wanted to reply to. Just switch between the thread and your word processor to compose a reply, then copy-and-paste it to Post Reply.

That Down Arrow at the beginning of thread titles is great! It brings you to the next unread post, so you don't have to reread everything you read the day before. If you want to reread them just click on the thread title instead of the arrow.

The new software seems to bw working pretty well so far. It will take a while to get used to the differences from the old software, but all in all, I like it! :D

Spark, but I am not fond of all the specific categories in the sale and trade forums. It used to be I could scroll through the ”For Sale” forums and maybe stumble across something I didn’t even know I needed, but was a fantastic find. Now, well - I already spend too much time online and this just adds to the time - and when pressed for time, I’ll NOT open one of the specific categories and NOT find that fantastic deal. I don’t need this many choices.

I agreee with JIM SIX and i think it has !!!toomuch FLASH  :barf:

It's not so bad once you get used to it...I am kind of an old dog that way. Reminds me of the e-zboard format like on the Hoods Hoodlums.
I DO like the ability to use fonts, colors, and other tools.

Hmmm... interesting change, I knew spark was oogling over the new UBB software the last time I was in the chat... I didnt think it'd be this drastic though :p

Pro:
1. I like some of the features, like being able to edit the subject line, and like being able to add your own subject line to a thread (see above)
2. I think I like the additional categories under "for sale", as long as I can scan them all quickly (see Negative #2 below in this post). I'm not an automatic knife fan, so that is "just one less thing", to paraphrase Forrest Gump.

Pro, depending:
It is easier to use bold, italic, and fonts/colors. And of course many will, for example, TOTALLY overuse these features and make their posts less readable in the process. :) :D  :barf: :p

Con:
It is less "screen dense"... fewer posts load per page, and the tradeoff is that the new geegaws/features/icons fit into the page.

Negative --
I miss these features, already, so far:
1. "Today's Active Topics" sorted by originating forum
2. When you've read a post, the subject line text goes from bright blue to dark blue, so you know you've entered that thread already...particularly useful for scanning the "for sale" forum.

Comment:
Times Roman, as a proportionally spaced, serif font, is the easiest for the human eye to read quickly, mostly because it is efficient with space, and the little serif "feet" on the letters form an invisible line that guides the eye from left to right. That is why newspapers and books are nearly always printed in a proportional, serif font of one flavor or another. Therefore, I'd probably make it the default font for all posts if that is possible. YOMV.

I like Spark and I want to say thank you.
I figure I'll know what all these new buttons do in about 6 months, just about the time BFC outgrows this latest update. :)
Of course I could read the FAQ's or it would be really helpful if I could see the explanation underneath the buttons, but it's a lot more fun to just learn by trial and error or to just bug you endlessly with the same stupid questions.

Thanks for the offer. I'm going to try it again. If I have problems, I'll take you up on your offer.

I was using Microsoft Picture Express, and I must be doing something wrong. I've never used that program before, so maybe it's just my dumbness.

i like the new site overall. same comment on the email feature as the others. not as easy to use and no real way of knowing if Vern got my message.
thank you,

Hello,

I think the new software upgrades suck. The KISS principle just flew right out of the window. I do not need somebody watching over my shoulder, and telling me who to email. Going through the forum to email another person is BS, and a waste of my time. Just plain censorship in my opinion. It is the wave of the DEMOCRATS. Hey, do not email that person about the knife you have for trade because you have not paid your $30 membership fee. Ebay is sounding better all the time. I know, I know, Ebay sucks too. And for the person or persons that do not agree with me, I could care less what you all think. And for the people that do agree with me, remember, I told you so.

D1, what are you talking about? To email someone you just click on the "email" button at the bottom of their post, and click on their email address. Your email software should pop up with that person's email address ready to go.

It's really no differant from the previous forum software.

$30 membership fee???

Where is this posted???

I have been asking about membership fee's, and when, but I haven't heard a thing until this. Please elaborate, Spark.

You do not need "permission" to email anyone whether you choose to use the Private Message system or regular email. You're COMPLETELY off base here.

If you will notice the "Email" button at the bottom of this post, click it, and you will see a link that says armorer@starband.net

If you click the link, it will open your normal default email program and you can email me exactly the same way as when BFC was still a UBB forum.

The PM option is just that. An ADDITIONAL option, giving you greater CHOICE in how you choose to communicate with other forum members.

Instead of screaming "Censorship!" and other ridiculous charges, take some time, look around and learn how this new software works. It's pretty simple, but you DO have to take the time to learn it. Read the FAQs, experiment, etc. It'll save you some embarassment in the long run.

It's taken a me a few posts to get used to it. At this point, I still like the old one better because I made like 2100 posts with it and I am so used to it, but eventually this one will look fine. Sort of like a new haircut right now, though! I think this one seems to run a little slower on my computer, and I could do without all the options, but standard posting is the same and once you post a few messages it isn't a whole lot different.

Over all I like it, and I especially appreciate and compliment the job you did getting all the data over from the old software.

Some of the features don't seem to work yet. The down arrow takes me way past the first new (to me) post in a thread, but perhaps it will work better after I've been here a while. On the whole I like new and additional features. I sympathize with those who prefer the simpler layout of the old system, but this isn't that much different (reading, I see that posting is quite different).

I think the over-all tradeoff from my perspective is OK though. Others have also to realize that there is back-end business to be taken care of - stuff we never see - and that means the software should be better for you and other admins. to operate. That's 50% of a reason to upgrade, the user side is only the other 50%.

So what happens if I embed a url the old fashioned way?

http://www.sonic.net/~quine/thrower.html (throwing knife page)

Its fine. So you don't have to use the new features if you don't want and still do stuff the old fashioned (and sometimes easier to be sure) way.

It seems to load much slower on my computer also. I already disabled the VB option but it didn't make much difference. Is there anything else I can do to make it load as fast as the old one? Right now it resembles too much the slow loading of Knifeforums.com for me.

Other than that I can probably get used to it if I have to.

I also noticed after posting this reply that it took much more time to get back into the thread and I wasn't sure the reply was going to make it.
Is this normal?

No, I'm a nurse. Esav, do you want to take your risperdal now or in 30 minutes. If your tongue and neck start to get stiff please let me know. I can have that injection of cogentin ready in less than a minute :D

Seriously, a little paranoia never hurt anyone...much.
