New Spyderco Matriarch (FRN, Plain edged Civilian)?

So I assume that using the Matriarch as a utility knife will void its warranty, just like it does for the Civilian?

I don't know about that. The tip has been beefed up on the Civilian in recent years, so I don't know if it still carries that warning, or if this new Matriarch will.

I dig the color but I kinda wish it had some steel liners though, if its a defense knife. I wonder If I can take the blade and put it on an Endura 4 handle.

Should spyderco stop making it, because you don't like it?

I never said I didn't like it.

You are engaging in what is called a straw man argument. You attribute to me something I did not say - to wit, that Spyderco should not make the knife - and then attempt to refute the assertion I never made so that you can win an argument that I never engaged in. That makes me grumpy.

A closer reading of what I wrote would reveal that "I love my Spydies". You can discern that because thats actually what I said.

I also thought that my point about vivisecting an Eastern Block counter-intelligence agent was at least slightly funny, but I acknowledge that I may have failed on that one.

At first blush, this looks like a Mall Ninja knife to me. Thats just my initial impression, because we see all manner of mall ninja knives with barbs, strange shapes and scary names.

But, like you, I would dang well carry a Matriarch or Civilian if I did not live in a free state where I could carry a gun.

Edit: if Mr. Sal prices this commensurate with the Endura - give or take - I'll be getting one.

If you could build one from scratch, you'd have no trouble. The pivot hole in the blade will be too small for the pivot barrel and screw used in the Endura 4. If you succeed in drilling out the pivot hole to the proper size, odds are good you will throw the lock geometry off, quite probably resulting in an unsafe lock.

Steel liners would double the weight and defeat the purpose of a lightweight EDC dedicated defense blade. It is not intended to stab with, so the added support of steel liners would be wasted. Press and rip.

It is not a utility knife and shouldn't be used for any utility purposes other than opening letters or cutting twine. It is designed specifically for convincing a much larger attacker to let go of you. If used repeatedly, or misused for utilitarian purposes, the curved tip will snap off. Not a disposable knife, but not intended to be used for anything other than its intended purpose either.

Great design, but certainly not for everyone. I typically recommend Tasman for self defense because it is primarily a utility knife and more durable, and the average person does not want to carry more than one knife and wants that one knife to be able to actually cut things other than people without breaking. Tasman is great for that. But personally, I much prefer the Matriarch.
