New Steel CPM MagnaCut available today

Hope it stays in stock because I'm going to have to move a knife before I can afford it.

I'm not complaining. It cost what it does and Pop's prices are always good but is it going to stay this high and if so why does it cost so much more than say S35VN? Just wondering if there is something that changes things.

Presumably low production volume is the starting driver for price, and this started as an experiment. S35VN is surely produced in much higher volume with a very stable demand in the market.

pop's shipping gonna be busy tomorrow

thanks for the heads-up on IG, Larrin!

I've been cutting a couple small batches of blanks and got to surface grind some in the HRc 62 range, they really came out nice. My order for 300 lbs of 140/156 & 172/188 is getting increased :)
Do you think Magnacut can be sharpened by water stones like the choseras and shaptons, or will users have to stick to diamonds?

Is there a reason not to use diamond? I'm not being sarcastic just asking. Now that I have learned to use them it doesn't seem like I would want to go back. Is it just a experience thing? As in it's more fun?

I would just have to buy them is all! I also have noticed that they leave an extremely aggressive scratch pattern if I’m not being extremely careful. I just like the bonded aluminum oxide stones better even if that somewhat limits me to steels that have a lower edge performance

It's 2021, there are bonded resin, vitrified bonded and metallic bonded diamond/CBN stones that are more prominent than before that Don't leave the aggressive scratch patterns of electroplating diamond and last longer.

On the topic of magnacut, would you think the choseras I currently have would be able to deal with magnacut if at a lower Rockwell (say 62)?

I got the email from pop's that it was back around lunch time by the time I got home and looked they were out of stock again. You've got to be ready to jump on this stuff to get some

Had some time to use a magna cut knife (62-63 HRC) and I can confirm that it is quite easy to sharpen on whetstones like the Choseras. The Chosera 800 cut the steel and formed a burr very very fast. The chosera 3000 had a bit more trouble with cutting than some other steels of the same class like s35vn but still was manageable. The steel probably sharpens most like s35vn, but other steels I have like Vanax and cru-wear sharpen better. Of course, magna cut is more balanced than either of those.

Any October updates on availability? :-)
I picked up a couple pieces from Alpha about 2 weeks ago. Last week I noticed that they had quite a few sizes and thicknesses, but they were gone later that day. I suggest checking in the morning every few days and perhaps signing up for the email alerts.
