New to for GB

I only mentioned single shot at a time because many unknowing folks are afraid of the appearance. Take a mini 14 an put it in a bullpup an its scary. Stock not so scary but both exactly the same.
I have 6 full auto M16's at work and 2 full auto MP 5's, also a couple full auto M14's. There's a time an place for everything.
I don't need full auto but fun to play with.

We can agree to disagree... I see it as a waste of good ammo. One shot one kill. Know your target then engage. I am not in a squad and I don't need suppressive fire, I am a lone wolf defending myself and my family. There have been many tests over the years usin 30round mag dumps vs 30 round rapid aimed fire. You will be lucky to get a 10 rounds on target @ 25 yards by just dumping the mag spraying and praying. Rapid, aimed semi auto fire is only marginally slower than full auto yet you can expect the majority of the rounds to be on target.

A cool headed person using controlled semi auto fire is much more dangerous foe than a person with full auto dumping mags at you. It's marksmanship 101... I know it's different when bullets are whizzing by your head, but as long as you can keep a cool head you will always be better with semi auto fire.
100% agreement when not part of a fire team. As part of a squad sometimes your job is to keep heads down so your buddies can either bounce or close. One or two weapons on full keep's 'em guessing what they're facing, and staggers mag changes within the support element so everybody doesn't go dry all at once.
Incidentally with the 12" m4 I chopped in the sandbox, on the range I could dump a whole mag in an e-type in one long burst. (Is this useful? No, but 5.56 is pretty controllable). It was however a)educational and b) hugely entertaining.
(When you chop an M4 to 12" and open up the gas port, they run very, very fast...fast enough that you need the heavy buffer so the mag spring can keep up).

I have to admit we have hit a pet peeve of mine so this might be a challenge for me to agree to disagree with, but I will try. Personally I have zero idea how a civilian or even most ex-soldiers plan to do the self defense thing. Hubby and I have a class III trust so my intent is to defend my home the same as I would have defended a TOC in the Army, if it moves and doesn't know the password it will quickly be capable of being melted down for making steel and copper jewelry. Plus I personally only know what I learned while people on the other side of the playground were actually prepared to shoot back. And that is when you have a weapon that is selectable you don't need semi auto and a 3 round burst, you need semi auto for the controlled shots and fully auto for the suppression. So giving grunts semi+3rnd is bean-counter bullstuff. The M4 with it's short barrel is garbage with significant reduction of accuracy after 200 yards plus it takes the already under powered 5.56 and ruins it's terminal velocity. And, if they want me to shoot only 3 rounds, then why not just shoot those 3 semi auto as GB points out it isn't that much slower. Where as full auto DOES present an entirely different purpose than semi auto, thereby allowing one weapon to perform more than 1 duty. Anyways, I have to admit I am glad I resigned my commission before I had to take a unit anywhere near the line of fire with M4s and after the people who stay behind the lines got a hold of the idea that wasting bullets was a "thing". Sorry I am just old fashioned. 2 out of 2 of the places I wound up where people were likely to shoot back were jungle, deep, serious jungle were you couldn't see 200 feet in front of you, forget actually aiming. So for me, semi-full select makes much more sense. Plus, even with full auto selected, I can choose to shoot 3rnd bursts if that is what is necessary, heck I did it often enough on the range. But, if I need to just Rock and Roll trust me, that is what is necessary for some situations and removing that option is one of those "well we might see a few casualties but we can save money and as a bean counter my butt won't ever be the one on the line so" type moves. Would love to hear Bookies viewpoint about the Semi-burst selectors :D Bet he would consider it not very wise but he might fool me, I don't always guess right about his views.

I don't understand you line of thinking, "I have zero Idea how a civilian or even most ex soldiers plan of self defense thing"... I take great exemption to that! We are entitled to our opinion so I will give you mine...

It sounded to me like she was saying she wasn't sure what was the average person's defensive plan, and then described her own.

I am sorry GB, I certainly did not mean to imply anything was wrong with other people's plan, I apologize if that is what you got from what I wrote. I just meant that I didn't know what those plans were and can't comment on those people's plans because I am unaware of what they are. But the rest what my husband and I and the few ex-soldiers I have discussed it with have decided we felt worked best for us. Particularly since I have the ability to own multiple class III weapons.

I also kind of blended together that with my rant about burst3. So I can see how you read it that way and I apologize for my poor writing skills. I am sorry!

No need to apologize... I am not upset in the least. I didn't mean to come off like that...if I did, then I am sorry too.:D
