New to knives (Suggestions on knives other than spydercos)

Hello... I'm relatively new to knives :D (It started with a byrd meadowlark), and i now have a delica4 PE and tenacious PE on the way :D :D.

One thing though... I can't seem to find any other folders I like within the delica price range other than spyderco ones (dream knife = paramilitary, but there's no way I can afford it T_T).

I quite like the design on CRKT's M16 line, but the use of lower quality steel + the annoying AUTO lock thing really put me off. Can anyone suggest some knives from other companies that are within the delica price range?

Thank you all for your time.

I like the kershaw storm for $40. The buck 110 or buck/strider 889 are also great. There are really a ton of good knives for around $50 if you look hard enough.

Kershaw has some nice knives in that price range (Leek, Shallot, Blur, JYD) as well as Benchmade Griptilians, which are about $10-$20 more expensive than the Delicas.

Take whatever money you have now and save it up for the knife you really want. Because you know you're going to get it in the end. Use an SAK or your new knives until then

I would place Kershaw firmly next to Spyderco in terms of value, quality and F&F. While most of their designs do not appeal to me they are an excellent alternative in the same price range. For a little more you can get Benchmade but I find a lot of Benchmade designs lacking the "oomph" that gets me to pull the trigger on a purchase.

As far as Kershaw goes you may be interested in the Leek, Shallot, Groove, Cyclone and Mini-Cyclone... but there are plenty of other models I'm not even mentioning!

The Boker CLB line of knives is excellent -- a great value with incredible designs. The Trance is my favorite in the lineup. I would not put Boker up as high as Spyderco but they still make a great knife, with very agreeable pricing.

IMHO if you really want the Paramilitary you should save up. If you can afford a Delica and you are looking to buy another in the Delica price range you will find that saving for a little while you can get what you want. I love the Paramilitary -- its superior performance and ergos make it probably one of the best tough little folders you can get at any price range. It is definitely a knife worth waiting for.

Scour the classifieds here for the Kershaws people have mentioned, as well as Benchmade 710's or Griptillians.

I've even seen a couple Benchmade 940's go for far less then you'd expect on that big ol auction site.

I was in a similar position when I came to this site. I wanted a good EDC but felt 50$ was too much for a knife. I wanted to spend 20-30 at the most.

Nowadays, I have a drawer full of "budget" knives that I never use while I edc the same 100$ knife everyday.

Buy the knife that fits you the best, regardless of the price. If you're set on a Para, buy a Para. This is not to say you can't find a good knife for less than 30$ (Quite the opposite!), just that eventually you're going to get that expensive knife, and you could get it a lot sooner if you just go for it right away.

I would suggest you spend a bit of time looking through the for sale areas of this forum. All sorts of interesting things come up, possibly some that you can afford.

Benchmade make some very good value for money knives. Maybe not quite as cheap as you'd like but, with knives, you often get what you pay for!

Kershaw is an excellent product and has models within your price range. A G Russell and Ka Bar do some good knives and they'll fit your budget. Also, I don't remember the prices, but there are some good reports on the 5.11 series of knives. If you like more traditional lockbacks, Buck does some nice knives in their 5XX series.

whoa.. thanks for the huge feedback guys :D
I've taken a look at the kershaws and found some that look interesting. I quite like the leek... but its assisted opening D: ? (that illegal here in Australia). Can anyone confirm this knife is assisted opening for me?

By the way...the knives I have (will have soon :0) don't really see much use daily and are mostly for weekend / fishing or just slicing random things I get my hands on (I just turned 20 and am an accountant working in a office...so I don't really get to play with them during work.) I really don't know why I want cool knives so bad....... arrgh D:

With this in mind...would you guys say that I should just stick with the delica as EDC, meadowlark as backup in car...and tenacious for weekend carry.
OR...
Get a para.

Arrgh..the choices.

I would not get a para, if i a Delica feeds my needs.

Once i gave a Kershaw Whirlwind to a relative and, well it has to take hard use, the liner is worn down after for years and the action does not work anymore.

There are "cheap line" knives made by Benchmade, that could be considered too.

+1 on saving for the Paramilitary - and watch the for sale section here. I got my Para for $90 shipped from a member of this forum. It replaced my 551 Grip and I don't miss the Grip at all.

Yes, Leeks are AO knives, but if you dismantle it and put out the spring, you'll be a law abiding citizen. ;)

Ever tried a Kershaw Lahar? It's one of my favourite knives...

Another suggestion for the Boker CLB designed knives, especially the Subcom(s) and the Trance.

The Leek is AO and there is a fair chance it will be grabbed by customs so I suggest you forget that one.

If you're interested let me know and I'll connect you with a great knife dealer here in Oz who can get you all sorts of (legal) knives at great prices, excellent guy to deal with.

There is also an Oz knife forum where you can get good local info.
