New to this forum, want your opinions on some knives ( first good knife )

Get a sharp maker and the whatever tickles your fancy. I honestly enjoy bringing a dull knife back to hair popping. As for CRKT, they don't get much love around here, but I find the 8cr they use holds up really well. The fossil was a knife I had to have just due to the design. It's the smoothest flipper of all my knives, and it's quite large. A little too big for my mits actually, but I still love it.

I would spend 70-80$ on a spyderco native 5 lightweight. S35vn steel so youll get good edge retention. Or spend around $100 and get the spyderco manix 2 lightweight in s110v steel. An endura goes for what 60-70$? I would spend an extra 30-40 and get one of those 2 i just listed, your getting a good quality steel.

Welcome to the forums, I miss the Netherlands, :( as far as the choices, Cold Steel is a step up from bargain knives, I have about half a dozen Cold Steel knives and use them a lot, they're not the best steel but probably better than what you're used to. At least they're easy to sharpen. The other good choice for budget folders for EDC would be CRKT, they make a good knife for a reasonable price.

The reason they don't get much love around here is while they have great looking designs, the execution can be hit or miss.

I don't know though, the large Fossil goes for $55-$60. That is a lot of money for Chinese bade 8cr. If I am going for budget and getting 8cr from China I would look at the various Kershaw offerings. The Thermite is one I have and use which can be had for $30-$35. Then again, if you just have to have that Fossil design, go for it.

Buy the Spyderco. They're funky looking until you hold/use one. Chances are you will fall in love.

+1 so much this. I never liked the look of Spyderco. Then I used one and bought a Delica. Now I have a lot. They're my favorite brand by far and I love the looks now. Just get one and use it, it will grow on you big time

If your on a budget go with the spyderco. Great knife that won't break the bank!

The thing is tho the spyderco if not for the discount would cost me more than the CRKT and Cold steel one.
And even with the discount it is still only 5 euro's cheaper than the cold steel one.
So the pricing isnt really involved in the decision making.

wooooow $55-$60 all the knives i said cost around 80-90 euro's the CRKT one costs around 95 euro's...
Cold steel is 99, the mcusta one is 135 and spyderco is 85 euros.
I wish the pricing here would be the same but damn, you pay less than half of what i have to pay.

Out of your choices, I would go with the Spyderco hands down. Good steel, excellent ergos, fair price...what's not to love?

I'm going to go ahead and suggest sandpaper as a sharpening system, as it is cheap and works.
Also, just take into account these guys and their love of Spyderco. A thread could ask "Kershaw this or Benchmade that?" and half the replies will be "Spyderco."
That all being said, I haven't heard much bad about any of those knives you have listed. Personally I'd go with the CRKT or Mcusta simply because of the lock. Course I've only ever fondled those knives, never owned.

Have you actually handled any of these knives? What good is getting the 'best knife' if it doesn't fit you? I too didn't care much for the look of the Spydercos. Then I held one. Fit my hand perfectly and I was hooked.

For me, it comes down to either the Cold Steel Recon 1 and the Spyderco Endura, depending on how you intend to use them.

The Recon 1's blade is longer (4" vs 3.44") and thicker (.138" vs .125") but is of slightly 'inferior' steel (AUS8A vs VG10). The Recon 1 is hollow grind while the Endura comes in hollow or full flat grinds. The Recon 1 is much heavier (5.3oz vs 3.67oz) and has G10 scales vs the Endura's FRN.

If you want a lightweight 'slicer' that can get crazy sharp and hold that edge, get the Spyderco Endura with the full flat grind (FFG).
If you want something you can be rough with, even the point of abuse, get the Cold Steel Recon 1.

+1 Since you already have some dull beater knives, practice your free hand sharpening technique with them. Plenty of Youtube vids showing how.

While yes that is true we do have great knife prices over here my point remains the same. The cost to what you get ratio is still the same. 95 Euros for a chinese produced 8cr blade from a company with not the best reputation is a lot when for basically the same price you can get a better knife. If the CRKT was cheaper, I would be all over it but it is too expensive for what you get. Most other Chinese made 8cr blades are in the $30 range.

You get way more value for the Spyderco and the Cold Steel is not far behind. Both would be a better option at your price.

Not really hearing allot of people about the Mcusta knife, is that because allot of you have no experience with the knife or that you just dont like it?
Since it also has high quality steel and looks great.

I'll admit I don't have any first hand experience with Mcusta and I have only seen a couple of reviews. My initial take is that once you get into that price range you start to get some more option that I would rather have. From Spyderco it would be something in the Manix series, Military, and Paramilitary 2. Benchmade had good stuff in that price range but not as much anymore. Examples would have been the 710, Contego, Rift but since the MAP fiasco these are more expensive now. ZT has the 350 series. Maybe someone will come along and can comment more on Mcusta.

Later in life i might get a ZT knife when more money comes my way since allmost all ZT knives that i can find here in the Netherlands are above 200 and around 300 euro's.
But they do look amazing and i would love to own one.

Of the knives you mentioned I have experience with the Recon 1 and Endura. Both are very good. The Recon will be the bigger and tougher knife but the Endura is no slouch and has the better steel. Both you can easily sharpen. What I use the most for sharpening is an inexpensive ceramic rod. Depending on the steel and how dull it has gotten, I can put a razor edge back on most knives in no time. I touch up often so my knives don't really require much work to keep sharp. If you are going to step your knife game up you will want to know how to sharpen. Practice is the only way to accomplish that.

The Mcusta looks good but is expensive. The CRKT is quite expensive for what you get (8cr13 steel).

Other knives to look at are the Ontario Utillitac II and the RAT series (1 & 2). Also the Esee Zancudo and Avispa are great values.

I bought the Mcusta knife, the the bottom near the handle was sharp as hell and the pointy end was really sharp but in between it would just snag on paper.
It was also a bit on the small side for me since i have gigantic hands...
I am now looking between the Mcusta ( because they just sent me a bad knife it still looks and feels good but might need a bigger one ) recon 1 still, the spyderco endura oooooooooor the spyderco C07 Police plain edge.

The spyderco is gaining favors with me since i've heard some bad things about the recon 1, and the advertising they do about the knives also put me off a bit since they show a plain edge knife and then do all the testing and slicing with a serrated knife.

Hope you guys are still willing to help me out since its a pretty big ammount of money for me.

Cold Steels marketing is just that. I pay it no attention. I have had the Recon 1 and it was a great knife. Now that you mention the Police that would be the one for sure. But again, if you are looking in that price range the options open up quite a bit.

I am looking in that price range but the options are limited over here, not allot of knife webshops and even less actual shops unless they're survival/outdoor shops and even then its more multitools and nothing much unless again you look into their webshop.
If you have some nice suggestions, would like to have a very sharp knife that can hold an edge for long time. I have no clue what the Spyderco police knife is in price where you live but if there are knives in that range that are really good, i'd like to hear wich ones.
Thank you all by the way for all your suggestions.

Herstal, I have owned many knives from big brands, and many of those knives have come dull. Before you buy another knife, I'd suggest learning how to sharpen.

Just my opinion.
