New Toys....err...Tools?

Too damn many!! This week I've gotten in 3 CS hawks, a Bushman, Safekeeper III, Buck Hartsook, and Strider PT.

But, a couple of Hawks are going to be pimped and kydexed for friends, the Hartsook is for a mini kit for another buddy, and the Safekeeper is headed to the sandbox with yet another cohort. The PT, Bushman, and one of the Hawks are mine, all mine. I'll throw up some modification and sheath pics of the hawk and bushman when I'm done. About to head to the shop and get started.

I'm really digging that RMJ, Mistwalker!! Looks like an absolute beast! Wish they made one with a hammer pole.

Well...sounds like fun, and considering the plans doesn't sound like too many to me. I look forward to the new pics!

The Shrike is really awesome, I really love the new grinds.

By the way, they do make a hammer poll, it and the Jenny Wren, and the shorter Shrike are in their new line up.

Here are my new ones that I treated myself to. I'm going to the beach in a week, so I decided I needed to bust out some stainless. Can't have my O-1 stuff anywhere near that saltwater. lol

Those look great Bro!

I hear ya on the stainless, a Buck 119 was my go-to fixed blade when I lived in Tampa Bay...but that was before all the new super-stainless :) .

Remember to post some pics of your hawk mods in the CS hawk mod thread over in the axe forum.
I have 6 modded hawks here myself, i should follow my own advice and take and post some pics!
:D

I was just wondering what new edged tools others have been playing with today.

Here are the two I've been playing with today. One of them isn't exactly new...but it has a new aspect. John Hutcheson of both SURSUM Knife Works and RMJ Tactical put new edges on my Shrike for me today, he did all three of them.

Hey Mist that shrike is awesome! Somehow i suspect its out of my price range, lol!
But i did just get a SOG Fusion Hawk this week so that will keep me busy for a little bit.
My cutlery buying sabbatical actually lasting a little over 6 months so i guess i do have some will power after all, LOL!
:D

Yeah it's really sweet....and a little out of my price range too lol, considering I am not in a line of work that really calls for one. Luckily I made a friend of Ryan and get to trade bushcraft lessons and lunches for such things. If you noticed it's not a finished model, lol, they don't come with blue handles. I get to experiment with some of the ones that don't quite pass their q.c.

I'm curious to know how you feel about the SOG after you use it a while.

6 months?! You have more will power than I do :)

Will do. I got one of the heads stripped and ground a bit. Mostly squared everything up, cleaned the slag out of the eye, and convexed the edge. Got a sheath made for it, and sanded and shaped the handle. I'll post it when done.

G'day Brian

Last weekend, I travelled to my brothers farm to give him a hand processing 4 lambs.

It gave me an opportunity to put the Carpenter XHP stainless steel through its' final test by using it to skin & gut 2 of the sheep without touching up

BTW, how have you been?

Kind regards
Mick

Hi Mick,

I've been fine...just getting caught up on things. How have you been?

Man, that brings back a lot of memories. When I was a kid I had cousins that raised meat goats and sheep. I got all the hides I wanted and a good bit of meat just for hanging around and helping out on the weekends.

You still liking that new Barkie?

Oh yeah, they are definitely making them for sure. I got to see them in the process today.

What's even better is that John put a fresh edge on his personal one after some testing he'd done and told me to take it to the woods and work with it a while :D

I saw the new Talon and Kestrel blanks today may get to see them in the machining process tomorrow :)

I've been busier than a Blow fly in a used toilet :D

Yeah, I'm still impressed with the new Barkie :thumbup:

This steel on this knife just doesn't make sense. It has a great ability to retain a very useable working edge, yet is easy to resharpen when the working edge is finally gone

Kind regards

That is an AWESOME poll design.

I think so too, it's really sweet to use. The grind is laid back more than the Shrike so it chops better.

Dammit!! Thanks MW, my bank account really appreciates it!

Lol, sorry man...you're the one that said "I wish", so I was just letting you know.

It's a small batch...only eight or so I think...so all you have to do is wait a little bit and you'll miss it ;) will be a few months before the next batch.

G'day Brian

I know that feeling well my friend :)

Well...sounds like the steel dreams are made of

Wow; really like that one!

Just picked up a CS Hawk, and had it stripped (Thanks Snake Doc!) - Interesting implement...

Seems to really enjoy flying about and gnawing into trees :D !!

Have since rounded the sharp corners of the hammer-head, and convexed the edge.
Any suggestions for oiling the handle; seems really REALLY dried out...?

Now to figure out some Kydex pants...

Cool thread

Thanks man, glad you're enjoying the thread

Yeah, I'm really liking it too. It is actually optimized more for real cutting...wood, meat, bamboo...whatever, more so than being a breaching tool like the Shrike but still handles cutting into the steel drum just fine.

As for oiling...if I recall correctly my father used linseed oil on out axe handles when I was a kid. Other than that I have no idea, maybe some of the others will chime in on it. That CS set up looks good, how long is that handle?

Howdy River. Boiled linseed oil for the handle.

I've made a few sheaths for the Trail Hawk. What I've found is I have to offset the rivets a bit. On the bottom, one behind what little beard it has, then one up top, a bit closer to the edge. That way the blade kinda rocks into the sheath, instead of pushing straight in. It locks real well. I've put the angled one on the stripped head on a baldric set up. You can sling it around your head with out it coming out, but if you snatch it straight down, it pops right off. Works nice. The straight one won't do that. You have to pull it straight out.

For hawk handles, birchwood casey truoil, or my preferred route, gunstock wax. It's a blend of carnuba and beeswax that does and awesome job of sealing up the wood, and the finish lasts longer than oil. Since using BC Gunstock Wax I have not noticed any swelling or shrinking of the haft, resulting in loosening or gouging of the wood.
