New trend, everything is now a Bugout killer

I almost feel like Benchmade made a version of the Bailout, with 3V steel and a grivory handle, to compete with their own Bugout line. I have a Blue Bugout, but have been tempted on a number of occasions to get one of the lighter Bailout knives in 3V.

The bugout is severely overpriced for what you get, stock. It just is. It’s a fantastic knife and when upgraded with aftermarket scales it’s even better. But, considering all angles it’s priced ridiculously for what it is.

Here’s the one I still have:

And here’s the one I should’ve kept. This was one bad mammajamma I wound up with after swapping some parts. Sold to @Smaug.

Woah! Who makes those bugout scales? Great shape.

I agree with what you’re saying when you look at it on paper but the demand clearly doesn‘t support the argument that it’s overpriced. I think the fact that BM is such a familiar brand, even to non knife enthusiasts, it’s going to be hard to beat for a while even though there are “better” knives that cost less.

I don’t think there are better knives that cost less. I think they are overpriced for what you get out of the box. They are. Just because people buy them doesn’t mean they’re a good value for what you spend. Even average Joes I know understand the significance of that butterfly stamp. They think it means “quality” and they’re right. The bugout is still overpriced as-is, for what it is.

I like a knife with some heft, so I never got the bugout fever, Ti handles all day baby!

Flytanium sells Ti scales for them, baby.

I don’t think they made the bailout to compete with the bugout, necessarily. I think they made the bailout as a slightly different and larger (tanto) version to sell in tandem with it. If you’re talking strictly weight the bailout’s still barely heavier at 2.05 oz compared to the 1.85oz of the bugout.

The Bugout killer came out some time ago in the form of a Para 3 LW. I prefer the blade shape, handle ergos, and overall build quality.

Not with that hump, it isn’t. Bugout competitor maybe, but…. Dat hump, doe.

I dislike thumbstuds so everything that has a hole, flipper, or front flipper is better.

That one is crazy hard to find!!! I got lucky when it found me. I should really take a better picture with the case open. And even then pictures don't do them justice.
Yes it is, I missed the drop which wasn’t hard at only 200 pieces. It’s on my hunt list for sure!

Those are Applied Weapons Technologies (AWT) Archon scales. They’re subtly different from stock but they change the whole feel of the knife for sure. They’re badass.
Ti or Aluminum?

Going to be quite the hunt! If I see another, I'll let you know! I think there was one on that auction site but I wouldn't risk it for something that limited on there. Too many fakes.

Initial cost plus scale cost puts me in LG territory, and I love how that story ends!

Can’t argue with that. The bugout is more of a lightweight EDC than a compact brute tough like that Les George.

Bet the bugout would carry much lighter, take up less room, and cut rings around it. But that’s subjective I guess.

When I got my first bugout I was like “why the f@ck are people going nuts about this damn thing? It’s small. It’s not tough. It’s light. It carries like it’s not even there. But it sure does cut well. And it’s handy. And it’s easy to just throw in a pocket. Shit.”

💡Ahaaaaaa.

But I don't buy the new trend that everything is the new Bugout killer, the bugout is still unbeatable for what you get weight wise. I love when people complain about the handle flexing, how hard are you really trying to use a knife that's 1.85 oz? This time it's the new Kershaw Bel Air.....at 2.9 ounces and street price of $150 (about 25 less than the going rate of the basic Bugout). I see everybody all of a sudden shouting out "Bugout killer", like people are purposely rooting to dethrone the king. While this is good for competitive designs I've yet to see a lightweight knife truly be able to compete with it. There are plenty of knives that I like better than the Bugout, but facts are facts it's not dead, and still taking names. View attachment 2458944
Same thing i said at reddit. There's a lot of better knives than the bugout. Most claiming to be bugout killers.. well, are. But benchmade has a following, a name, and an aftermarket thats incredibly tough to beat. The bugout is kinda a crappy knife, really. Was probably revolutionary when it came out, but its been eclipsed in years since (including by other benchmades). The term "bugout killer" is simply clickbate nonsense though.

Have you handled and carried an ESV? They are not pocket hogs by any means and flip out as fast as any auto. Plus the blade geometry and stonewash make them extremely slicey. Look at me, mitchnola mitchnola would be so proud of this convert 😂
