New trend, everything is now a Bugout killer

Meh. I kept a large and a small and went back to buying Benchmades and Spydercos.

That's funny. I have two smalls from before.

And when I got this large 31 I stopped looking at spydercos and other makers(benchmade I stopped buying many years ago for a couple of different reasons).

Not saying it's gonna last 4 ever but that is status quo since I got it this summer.

I get it... Haven't bought a new Benchmade from a retailer since they were blowing out the discontinued 710 in early 2017, and I was good for at least a couple a year before that. Might have to break that streak since my wife commented she liked the look of the Mini Crooked River unprompted last time we were in an outdoors store.

The birthday card on my large 21 says August 2012, which sounds about right to my memory. I could've saved a lot of money over the last decade if that had been The One, hah.

^ The Benchmade Pinnacle was made to compete with the sebenza along w the Alias and some other makers knives at the time. The bugout is 1 thing but lets face it, there is nothing like a sebenza.
I would say there are companies doing quality manufacturing equal to CRK, which wasn't the case 25 years ago, but all of their signature knives are still not Sebenzas. Really, making a Sebenza killer was a fool's errand, and the companies that have been successful are making their own unique high-quality manufactured knives in their own design niches rather than cloning CRK's ouevre. It is interesting though that the titanium framelock flipper space is so crowded, but CRK continues being CRK. Wouldn't be CRK if they embraced rapid changes.

My (very late) two cents: I have a Gen 1 Deka. I was considering a Bugout and found the Deka locally, so I went with it. I have handled a bunch of Bugouts, and a friend lent me one for a time, and it seems like a bit of coin flip between these two to me. They both cut well and carry easily, similar cost.

I don't know that the Deka dethrones the Bugout but either would be a great choice for a 'lighter duty' erryday sorta folder.

We are supposed to be supporting the bugout in this thread and instead we are guilty of trying to kill it! 😅 As mentioned above, the Hogue Deka is really nice, and Hogues are smoother, have nice g-mascus scales which are more solid, and use Wolff springs; although ive had axis locks since 1998 and never broke one.....

Constructive criticism 😉

I currently own 2 bugouts 1 small and 1 standard both in s30v w/plastic scales. Bought both during the pandemic in 2020 I believe (both my most recent Benchmade purchases). Shortly after I upgraded the bigger bugout with micarta scales. Just recently I picked up the LW native 5 salt in magnacut and the endela in K390. I use all 4 of these for general edc and IMO for what I got, my money went further with Spyderco. The bugouts aren’t bad knives at all but for what you get I think they are a bit up there in price and that’s mainly why Benchmade hasn’t gotten any of my money for some time now.

The Bugout has a thinner blade than some delicas and the same thickness as others. I can’t think of anything that is better about the delica, aside from the price.
Both blades use 2.5mm stock. The delica has significant distal taper, the bugout does not. You can celebrate the bugout for a lot of things but having a thinner blade than the Delica is just not true.

On a more subjective note I find the bugout ergos worse across the board. The handle doesn't have much to offer and I vastly prefer the thumb ramp on the Delica to the bugout's flat section of jimping. The bugout is still a cool knife- way more fun to fidget with- but there's a reason I've thought "man I should buy one of those" ever since it released & never have.

I think you’re right, everything’s a bugout killer.

A buddy has a bugout, I didn’t care for it. Felt cheap and had rattle while closed in the pocket.
Delica, deka, pm3 all are better choices imo.

Neato scales! What are they made of, and where'd you gettem?
As others have said they are Spyderco’s Raffir Noble option for the Chaparral. It is absolutely impossible to take a picture that does them justice. They are some of the most visually striking scales I’ve ever seen. There’s actually a 3D effect to the layers that just doesn’t show up in pictures.IMG_0223.jpegIMG_0221.jpeg
