First let me say thanks to all of you that have answered a few questions I've posted here. My old account was "UnixDork". I finally ponied up the money for a knifemaker membership to try to repay the help I've received.

I've ordered a couple blade blanks from Great Lakes Waterjet and I hope to have something worth showing soon. I'll try to keep the stupid newbie questions to a minimum.

I've been doing computer & networking work for many years now, so when I get to be too annoying just ask me for help with your web site. :D

Thanks guys.

Hi Harry... You and I have some commonalities... I've been doing IT work for the last 13 years...got my feet wet in the posix/linux based systems with Slackware back in 95 or so...-jump 13 years- now I hate computers, but it's a living. About a year ago i started making some kit folders, then fixes blade blanks, then hooked... I just started my first stock removal blades about a month ago. I now feel consumed..mentally and financially to this "thing of ours" (apologies in advance to any Mafiosos in the forum that I may have infringed upon, and I'll have your money Friday). I have six blades I'm about to send off for heat treat tomorrow, so I'll pony up for a knifemaker membership soon if they don't dissenigrate...Hoping to have 1 or 2 that I'm not embarrassed about. Best of luck to you!
-Mark

Thanks Mark! Please post some pictures of your work when it's ready. We nerds have to stick together!

I agree about then Nerd Knifemaking Coalition! But don't hate my (eventual) website...I haven't done web work since the net was "new".... I have a shot pre HT of my first attempts (top to bottom) ready(?) to be sent off. http://www.redmonknives.com/img/1stbatch.jpg , but I'll definitely put some pics up when they are done.

Thanks Harry! I like that one too...they seem to get a little (1/1000th) better each time... that one started out completly different, but when I got to the grinder, It just sort of made itself. I'm just using a low end 1x42 delta so I can't do any hollow grinds...and all my flat grinds end up convex... I ordered Tracy Mickleys plans for th 2x72 and am looking forward to building it soon...

I'm starting with some files and a vise. :o

My dad was a machinist for years and he just shakes his head. :D

Welcome (again). Switching to your real name was a good idea.Filling out your profile will help others know more about you, too.
Keep at it and you will be amazed at the progress you will make on your knives.

You must be a very patient person! Not sure what my dad would think if he was still around... probably freak on how much I spend on sandpaper alone!

If I were in your shoes though, I'd try and get some free milling lessons :D

Welcome aboard Harry. Files an a vise are great basic tools for making blades. I still use them after skillfully grinding a 5 or 6 inch blade. A single pass of a file will show a dimple if there is one.

Thanks Jim. I've seen your sidekick model here a few times, nice work. You must have knack for finding good stag. I like your sheaths too.

Welcome Harry!
We all were "newbies" at one time or another. No sincere question is stupid....and you'll find that to be very true on these forums.
One of the best values for time spent is to spend some time with a more experienced maker. And many makers are willing to have you visit...hopefully someone near your location is a maker...Get Knives 2008 book and see if you are near any other makers and give them a call.
Beware, knifemaking can become "addicting".

Thanks John. It would be nice to have an experienced maker here close. Unfortunately last year I moved here from Indianapolis or I'd be paying you a visit!

you're not the only person who wants that gun. i have a buddy with a brand new one too but he would trade even up for mine and its 30+ years old.

Welcome Harry. I'm an unwilling slave to the network here, but the money is much better than it was as a vet assistant... The animals here tend to have sharper tongues than teeth:)

Mtredon - Why you got to be fronting the 1500 grit? Makin' me feel bad for just having the 1K, and rarely using it at that:p. Nice blades there man!

And my old man had one skilsaw blade my entire youth (and that's damn near all, so he thinks I'm the cats azz for making knives:D

Regards,

Dave
