New wanna-be maker introduction

Thanks Dave! I needed a little confidence boost... The sandpaper was the closest thing I could find to a clean spot on my bench :o .. I don't find myself using the higher grits for much other than cleaning up my pins/bolsters, etc before the buffer....

Oh, now you gotta go braggin' about a BUFFER! Why in my day, yesterday, I used a dremel... :D Gotta get one o' them things one o' these days. Know what you mean about clean space. By the time I get done with one blade I'm lucky if I can turn around without knocking crap off one table or another. Sometimes I just find myself standing in the middle of the floor holding the knife with absolutely nowhere to put it down. Nothing may scratch our precious...

Just keep on making them, it gets even better. And my favorite part is when the HT has just been done. It's just a wicked piece of work at that moment. Then I clench buttocks and put it back on that wonderfully wicked grinder and pray I don't screw it up!

Have Fun!,

Dave

Dave...not braggin... hell it's not technically even a buffer..just an old 6" delta bench grinder with 8' buffs:o Still pretty scary sometimes.. might have to trade my apron up for some hexarmor or something soon... I think I saw on Karl Anderson's site (and I paraphase) ..He doesn't trust a knifemaker with a clean shop :D One can say what they will about my knives, but by those standards, I'm trustworthy...

Harry- Almost feel like a thread theif... sorry.. shop talk ... btw, I bought a MKII back in '01.. fantastic little pistol! I'm a huge Ruger fan...I seriously was bummed when Bill Ruger passed a few years ago. We're suppised to be shooting on some private land on the 10th... I'll throw some pics up.

Cool, I'd like to see 'em. I've got the wants bad for the new 4" Redhawk in .45 Colt. That money will be spent on a grinder though. :D

Harry, That's a nice choice! Wow... another nerd wannabe knifemaker that likes guns! small world eh? :D What are you thinking about for a grinder? I hear ya about the tools though... it's become my priority too... Still would like to buy another AR before the elections... hard telling what things will be like in a year or two. My buds step dad has a Super Blackhawk in .44 mag... I hope he can borrow it for next weekend. It's (quite literally) a blast. My only rugers are my MK II and my 10/22 target. My buddy Dan has a 6" SP101 in .357... I almost like it (almost) as much as my S&W in the same config but ported.

I want to buy a Coote. My next door neighbor and landlord is an electrician with good scavenging skills. I asked him tonight to start looking for a motor for me. I also told him I want to see if I can find a VFD. He said, "Oh, a freq? Yeah I'll find you a good one." Guess I should have spoke up sooner.

If you don't mind waiting on parts, you should build an AR. It's a lot of fun and you end up getting exactly what you want. Be careful though, modular firearms are pretty much like oxycontin for gun nuts. I built one a couple years ago and now I want to build another. Again, tools first.

Big Ruger fan too! Bought a Ruger New Vaquero (.45 Colt) several months ago and still have not gotten out to shoot it:o Gave my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 to a neighbor who lost his job a couple of years ago. Damn thing was a tank, but getting bit by the hammer a couple of times tends to make the shooting less fun. The 10/22 is a great gun too! Unfortunately, a friend and I customized a couple of them and now they have become safe queens. I highly recommend passive red dots sub 1 MOA. These things can pop .22 brass from 25 yards!

Anyhoo, regarding the grinders, the one thing I regret is not getting the variable speed control on the KMG. It would have been well worth it from the start. Going at 11 all the time is nerve wracking, especially when you're just trying to clean up one little area, and I'm far too lazy to change the speed by pulley position. Keep taking pics as you go, it's great to look at what you did 6 months ago and see how far your skills have developed.

Talk to you guys later, got an HP tech coming out to replace a tape library drive that's been torturing me for 2 years. Damn thing finally crapped out for good:thumbup:

Regards,

Dave
