New York Custom Knife Show

Hi John, glad you asked! :D

A list of attendees, and more info is on the NYCKS page of the promoter's website: Fifty/fifty Productions

Last year this show exceeded EVERYONE'S expectations in attendance. Certainly mine. I hope you will be around?

Coop

How do you think it is going to do this year Coop? Looks like there may be a few problems with transportation if nothing else. Attendees list looked a little light compared to last year but I didn't count.

Thanks, Coop!

I'm certainly going to do my best to get there. I am only here for a year--might as well see as much as possible:)

Jersey City is sodden and dark. Is this show still on?

One thing we've all learned: NY & NJ people are unstoppable, especially in the face of hardship.

I've talked to Steve D'Lack today and the show is definitely ON. The Westin has been awaiting power restoration, but there was no damage to the site. That is scheduled to happen today.

The NYC Marathon this weekend is a great example of the tri-state fortitude. Mayor Bloomberg is doing what he can to make this happen, even asking each of the 10,000+ participants to consider a $26.20 contribution to relief funds for the area. (Note exact amount ;))

Will the PATH trains run? Probably. We'll see.

I'll be there with my wife Susan. Make YOUR plans. :)

^^^ From a News broadcast today at 1pm. He's since run into SO much backlash, this evening they have decided to cancel the Marathon event.

Back to our regularly scheduled program....

I really want to go this year. Last year I was all set to head down and then I ran into a breakdown that cost me all my mad money. Is there plenty to do ? Will it fill the whole day ? I have never been to one of these events so I guess I don't know what I can expect.

I just saw the Emerson post. Understand his logic!

Can't the knife collectors of the East Coast benefit from the distraction of Emerson Knives making the trip?

Do the hoteliers, restaurants and merchants not need the monies from show attendees?

My logic is to put as much money back into the East Coast economy as possible.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I have already noticed a post elsewhere that said they weren't going if Emerson wasn't going to be there. I'm afraid there will be others. That show is too small to stand much of that sort of thing.

Thanks STeven. Exactly.

Rather than stay away, how about the promoters AND knifemakers going a step further: Giving back to the relief efforts in a BIG way.

Here's what's being done now (From a Fifty Fifty Productions email blast):

The East Coast has been home to the New York Custom Knife Show for 35 years, and in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy we would like to give back to the community that has supported us for so many years.

Donations & Silent Auction for the American Red Cross

NYCKS show producer Fifty Fifty Productions would like to commit $1,000 to the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts. Our knifemakers are also banding together for victims of the storm by donating knives for a silent auction, of which all of the proceeds will also go to benefit the American Red Cross. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the American Red Cross efforts, with your help we can reach and even surpass that goal.

Donations so far include knives from knifemakers Todd Begg, Anthony Marfione, Mick Strider, and from dealers Tommy Clark of Blue Ridge Knives, Paul Farina, Gary Levine, Derrick Obatake of Steel Flame, and Neil Ostroff of True North Knives. Auctions will be held at the NYCKS show on both Friday, November 16th and Saturday, November 17th. The highest bidder of each item will be announced the winner at the end of each day.

We encourage you to come to the show to support the recovery of the local community and to bid on the silent auction knives for the American Red Cross. In this time of need we must remember to come together as a team to help our neighbors and rebuild our communities.

We would also like to send a special thank you to the Westin Jersey City Newport for their continued hard work and effort. The hotel and staff are looking forward to the show and are in full support of our efforts to rebuild and bring life back to the economy in the area.

Any and all donations will be accepted and are encouraged. Please reply to this email if you are a collector, knifemaker, dealer, or supplier willing to donate to the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy relief and recovery efforts.

Thank you all for your support in bringing our knife community together to help the victims of the storm.

I'll be there. And I'll contribute in some way, rather than stay away. The New York radio airwaves are now filled with survival/samaritan good stories. This show will help.

I'm going. I braved the storm and need a break. The amount of state/local resources needed to support the event is infinitesimal. I bet the total amount of people attending the show will roughly equal the number of people who shop at a super market on a daily basis. No biggie. Would have loved to see Emerson as I was going to win a lottery knife (or so I dreamed).

Thanks to Steven for always telling it like it is, and to Coop for following up. I have some work and family obligations that weekend, but I am going to do my level best to get there, spend a bit of money on a hotel, spend a lot more money on good food and drink, and maybe even buy a knife or two.

I need to work that weekend but will try to make ECCKS. I am glad they are doing what they can to help- some areas really are devistated. I've never seen anything like it so close to home.

PATH is up and running at least from 33rd St. to Journal Sq..

That's how I'm getting there.

See y'all then,

BEANBAG

I'm planning to be there. I'm hoping that by next week, things will be mostly back to normal. There's no comparison between the knife show and the marathon for a number of reasons. Several people mentioned Emerson's post. Where is it? Is there a link?
