New York Custom Knife Show

I know Ernie's heart is in the right place, but he acted too quickly. That's my opinion.

Truth is, had the show not been coming to NJ, I would have done nothing more for the Red Cross, than my usual blood donation every 56 days.

BECAUSE of the show, I decided to make a $200 contribution for the disaster relief fund. I've let Fifty-Fifty know of my intentions.

Diverting funds/resources by being there? I doubt that. CREATING funds and serving resources by being there: Absolutely.

My local town lost a bunch of power, but no real disasters like the shores and townships of NY & NJ.

Every little bit helps. (Please consider how you can help. There will be opportunities at the show.)

Coop

Doug: Thanks for the link. I agree with Coop that his being there, and having the shiow in general, is a positive. But, at least his heart is in the right place.

Do the hoteliers, restaurants and merchants not need the monies from show attendees?

My logic is to put as much money back into the East Coast economy as possible.

Best Regards,

I usually keep my comments on this forum focused on the knives themselves. I will weigh in here as I am living this in NJ and can offer some perspective that I believe is helpful.

Part of what we need now is what STeven is saying. We are recovering slowly and the humanitarian aid efforts have been wonderful. Now the professionals are requesting that help be focused on financial contributions and skilled help. Well intentioned folks are donating items that aren't aligned to needs and creating what is essentially a donation infrastructure disaster. Volunteers are showing up on scene and causing a pretty big distraction. From press releases...

"It's really been a lot of stuff really affecting the disaster site," said James McGowan, the associate director of partnerships at the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster. "They're just showing up and they're not coordinated with the agencies."

Ad hoc relief groups need to make sure they are taking in only items that are requested and can be distributed. Money is the best because organizations don't have to pay to move it and can tailor spending to changing needs," McGowan said. Transporting and distributing a simple donation can be $15 to $25.

Here's the stuff that is harder to see...Local businesses are suffering and helping keep them viable is an underlying, long term need that isn't "in your face" when the scenes of physical destruction are so compelling.

My mother-in-law and sister-in-law lost their vehicles and had their homes terribly damaged (4 feet of water in the main floor, etc). They don't live in seaside mansions, they are regular folks. My impacts were inconvieniences by comparison. Revenue generating venues like the Jersey Shore boardwalks were destroyed. The state needs healthy businesses. They need their jobs.

With all due respect for anyone's personal decision, if Sandy is in your consideration set for show attendance please consider coming. I will have to sell some of my collection to fund Sandy's impact on my family but I will attend this show, eat in the hotel restaurant, pay for parking, and support local businesses. I will bring knives for Coop to photograph as a "thank you" to him and Susan for their attendance and donation.

I will also look forward to seeing good friends for a short time (Joe, look forward to a handshake and a man hug.). Young Mr. Brand, sorry I'll miss seeing you! Jeff (Manix J), are you in?

Thanks for considering my words and hope to see many of you at the show!!!

PS: if you are driving, NJ and NY have odd/even license plate gas rationing. Fill up before you get into NJ or NY.

GREAT Show. Good people, stunning knives, fantastic relief donations, and a nice supply of SBC images inbound over the next week or so. (No maker or table photos, sorry.)

To everyone who we saw: Thanks for the great vibes. This was a worthy weekend.

Steve's shows are alway great.

Jim and Susan it was great to see you as always

Rob always a pleasure

I came in with an old friend, I enjoyed seeing everyone

I grabbed Matt, headed into the city for a great meal and some good wine and all in all it was a blast.

Highlights for me was as usual are the people. There where some great knives but seriously Matt's Fire really was a standout
