New York knife laws

I am not too familiar with those two knives. The knife law is so subjective that you never get the same answer twice from those in charge of enforcing the law. tgrace has some good opinions, and I agree with most of what he said. Location within NY is a the biggest factor, followed by your activity when questioned and past record. In NYC there are a few locations where any knife will result in some sort of trouble. One of my workers received a summons for an exposed pocket clip while in uniform as an engineer with a tool belt on. The female officer told him it will be dropped in court when she wrote the summons. It was dropped, but the law clearly allows for him to carry a knife exposed while working in that sort of job. My point is you never know how an officer seeking numbers or just with an attitude may act.
Tom, I believe that it is strictly a numbers and revenue-producing exercise. Sure, the female officer who cited your worker was correct in stating that the charge would be dropped. But I will bet that your worker had to pay a "court cost", "administration fee" or, as we call it here in Massachusetts, a "victim-witness fee". Plus, your worker either had to take a vacation day or lost a day's pay due to the court appearance. It still cost him some money, regardless.

I carry whatever the fuq i want as long as ur not up to no good, like me nowadays, u have no reason to worry. Although a friend and i were pulled over and searched and he had like a typical locking folder with maybe a thumb stud, a frame lock and around a 3" blade but it was clipped in the waist of his pants and they just told him to clip it in his pocket instead.
But i did come here because i was a little curious. I always have friends taking my knives and holding them to their hands and saying its illegal cuz its longer than their 4 fingers. Im pretty sure that lil trick only applies to the city tho. Im in Long Island btw

This thread has been going on for a while! I, for one, am going to become a member of the knife rights organization. I really think we all should!

To my knowledge, there is NO law anywhere in the US referencing fingers or hand width with respect to the legality or illegality of knives. This is because the variability in such anatomical features is so great as to make any such measurement unenforceable.

That does not mean some LEO doesn't use that as a general reference because the local laws dictate a maximum length of 2, 2.5, 3 inches, etc and the LEO is using his/her hand/palm/fingers as a rough rule of thumb rather than use a ruler/tape measure. Some LEOs also probably use the statement to buffalo folks who don't know the real law.

NYC is the only issue I had a little cold teel ak47 when I went through the world trade centers and the guy was so scared at the security area.

Personally I have only had one issue with a knife and that was almost 20 years ago, when going into the courthouse. Small folder, and I put it into the tray and the officer liked it, so he called it a gravity knife. Not gonna fight that.

tgace, nice to see you haunting other forums. :D (DarkPhoenix on BS.net)
