That's crazy, I was looking at the HRLM thinking the same thing! I need the rust resistance of INFI in a hunting knife. It got me looking at the Lil Smokey.... They are INFI right?

I'm late to the thread and I struggle to write half as well as you did!
Great narration, photos and great results.... Memories that will last a lifetime!

I miss New Zealand too (I'm a kiwi) but I do get to come back and blast possums, rabbits and wild turkeys on a farm I have access to. Taking my recurve bow next trip!
 
Lil Smokey is Elmax I believe. My second most used blade on game is a HRLM. The rust/corrosion "issues" with SR101 are greatly overstated, greatly !! In a knife the size you are looking at I don't believe you are actually giving up a great deal at all in the INFI/SR101 comparison. That does not stop me wanting one in INFI but that is heart not head talking if we are to be honest.
 
I just read this whole thread! All I can say is WOW! I've hunted all my life and I completely agree with you that the "adventure" is what it is all about. Ya, putting meat in the freezer is fun but the thrill of the hunt is so much more. I envy your experience in the most respective way possible. You've set the bar pretty high for yourself now i'd say haha! It was a pleasure reading and thank you for taking the time to share it with us!

I have a KDSH and constantly get rust all over the edge. They rust up similar to 1095 and I always got my ESEE rusty too. I don't take as good care of knives in the field as I should. I know a proper wipe down would solve most issues, but I just love the way INFI has no issues with it. The satin stays smooth and clean :)

Thanks brother. Next one is Spring bear in Idaho. Spot and stalk in that high country should be another great one!
 
Took longer than expected, but hope this gives you an idea of how some of the different smaller Busse blades compare to each other. Not the best quality picture, but something I was able to put together somewhat quickly. The CABS is 7th from the right.

Just noticed that the AMS didn't make it into the picture, which might be a good fit for what you're after.

I think I'm more in the game for a SAR 3 now. It's a good mix of weight, strength, blade length and width...beauty :D

Now I just need to find one...

That is a great comparison picture!! Is that a Kreined Swamp Warden eleventh in from the left with the scales?
 
Well that was quick... Just scored a SAR 3 in new condition with sheath for roughly cost price :)

Pics when it finds its way home.

I don't have a SAR 3 and I'll be looking forward to what you think of her.
 
HK I will definitely let you know. Should get a few more hunts in soon, so I will have to take some photos using the knife and report back.

Very nice. What scales did they come with? My SAR 3 is now substantially thinned down from what it was. It's an excellent slicer but still plenty strong. The handle is really comfortable for me, but not sure how it will feel with someone with larger hands.

Looking forward to hearing what you think.
 
HK - Yep just some local hunts. Went out hunting last weekend but due to the Summer heat, the deer were down much lower than my elevation. Lesson learnt.

Warder - It's the black paper scales (my favourite). Can't wait to add it to the A-Team. CABS and SAR 3 with black paper mmmmmmmm..... delish.

Lol. I forgot it's mid summer for you. It was -9F here when I got up this morning, summer heat seems far far away :D

It's a nice change having some good weather here, but I am really looking forward to late Spring when the deer start moving more.
 
Its going to be over 40degsC here in Western Sydney today, my first deer hunt of the year is scheduled in four weeks..still going to be bloody hot ... :( I leave for new Zealand the weekend after that hunt...so it will mostly be some early season culls and exercise walking up big hills (deliberately leaving the Zombie Express at home)...LOL
 
Enjoy it mate! Aside from New Zealand, I can hardly remember the last time I put a local animal on deck. Oh well, I have just as much fun trying.
