New ZT offering : 0545

ZT just dropped a 0562 with micarta & magnacut

I do not really care for Magnacut, but the micarta in combination with the stonewash finish looks great. Same goes for the stonewash and the blue CF on the new 0450

A lot to like here with this one if you want as thin as possible. It’s real thin. Standard Bugout is .400 or so thick across the scales and this is .375

Not much substance though for $275 which I can see is off putting for some. I like the shape and thin blade stock for sure. The flipping action is nice.

I have discovered a design flaw for which I will be returning this one unfortunately. The relief they milled for the clip on the inside of the scale is not deep enough for the thickness of the clip to sit flush within the pocket inside of the lock side scale. The problem is the stand-off overlaps this area and as a result the stand-off does not sit flush and is indeed cockeyed. You can see the gap created and with the naked eye tell doesn’t sit square between the scales. I can fit paper between the stand-off and the scale.

I’m not the most critical person, small finishing issues I can often overlook but not being able to make things, true or flat and square is a deal breaker. Which is disappointing.

I honestly never thought i'd see this in a ZT

When I disassembled mine I found a huge amount of thread lock in that spot. Took a bit of time with a small pick to clean it all out.

I like the looks of it but it's a bit too small for my taste & at $340 MSRP/$272 MAP, it's a bit too steep, even for me.

However, I'd consider being a buyer at or about $200 (no tax & shipping included off of BF). Guess I'll wait . . ;)

In reality.. Internet hype.. the fact that so many mfg's are using it now because its the "new thing". I wasn't impressed when I had a knife in it and yes it did measure 63.4 HRC when I poked it, but edge retention was no where near as good as S45vn and S90V for me.

I think for a fixed blade where toughness is more the primary goal it would work well. But thats just my opinion.

If you like it, buy it.
I love the steel, but I hate the hype.

Why they insist on always putting a stupid carbon fiber scale on everything is beyond me. Just make a TI framelock out of TI for god's sake. Might have been a knife worth trying if they had.
Zero tolerance has been out of touch for a while. WE Knife ate their lunch and they don't know what to do about it.

I miss the 2010's when they dominated with hinderer.

That's too bad to hear about some problems, but it's not too unusual in new designs first production to have some issues. The QC should still be better. I hope they get this all sorted out really fast.

Dang M mrinella that isn't right.
You need to call the dealer you bought it from asap.

I tried to get pictures of the one I got, as it isn't jacked up like yours is, but I also can't take pictures like you either!!

My example flips fine, so I haven't taken it apart.

I hope your dealer takes care of you asap!

no harm in that. Seeing as they just released 3 “new” models in Magnacut in one week leads me to believe these won’t be the last

I love the steel, but I hate the hype.

Personally, i like all steels that aren't CrMov series/cheap d2/aus 8 (you get it), but on other hand, it can be magnacut , "plain, old" s30v, some spydie heat-treated 52100... it's all the same to me, i could never tell the difference anyway (given the limited use of the steels due to laws, work environment, lifestyle..), apart from the patina on the carbon steels.

That being said, M Modernflame , i enjoy the hype that follows some mechanism innovations or steels in particular, in the sense that it provides the ground for new designs and some great sprints in this case (0450/0562), and hopefully, as tony281sc2 tony281sc2 says, there are more to follow.
*This part excludes Spyderco since they do need a new steel to give us different steels, and that i like about them, even if not a big fan of the designs.

That F&F looks like absolute trash. I'm really surprised that ZT actually put that out. Hoping this gets traction and they sort it out.

I don’t have much experience with knives that use bearings. Why would that thin washer be necessary between the bearings and blade anyways? Certainly the ball bearings would be harder than the washers but maybe not as hard as the blade itself? A spacer maybe?

Has anyone seen the lockbar side ? It is horrible to say the least !And that crooked standoff and crappy lockbar and hardware ? There knives in fishbowls in gas stations for 4.99 that have a better fit and finish!

The washers don't go against the blade. They goes against the titanium and CF scales to provide a hardened surface for the bearings to run on.

Hmm maybe M mrinella will clarify. He made it sound like they were between the bearings and the blade. I shined a light in the one I have and believe I can see the washers in there as well. Could be my eyes playing tricks on me too.

I think they misspoke. The only way a washer would be between the blade and the bearings is if the person assembling it made a mistake.

Edit: you can see the bearing tracks on the blade, so I'm sure bearings were running on it. But if OP was correct, that might explain the lousy action...

looks like it has an extra washer on the show side, and 2 washers on the lock side for some reason

Yeah i paused ZTs video on that part, and didn’t understand what I was looking at at first…. lol bearing sandwich
Looks like maybe marketing or graphic design doesn’t work closely with engineering 🤷🏻‍♂️I don’t want to take mine apart because I planned on sending it back but I sure would like to figure this knife out, it has a lot going for it. Maybe some skiff bearings can be had or thick PB washers.
