New ZT0550 Thread !!!

well.. theyre "production" versions with a list an average joe cant get on and if you do you need to wait over a year.

i mean production on the scale like this one...where anyone can buy one.
Technically speaking anyone can get an XM-18 if they're willing to pay the premium and put up with some previous use on the knife.

Went to the post office today, just to make sure they know where I live.

The postmaster assured me:they do.

I'd suggest you all do the same.

Just in case. :(

But: I found this thread partway down page 2.

For shame,knifevultures.Jump in here.

It would be awesome if ZT made a version of the XM-18, it would sell like hot cakes!, The only problem is that some people might get upset since they payed $600.00 +, maybe to fix that problem use a lesser but good steel like 154CM, Sandvik Steel etc, and use a stainless framelock.

Page 2 save again.

Gerber makes one.

...thats like saying that the san ren mu sebenza lookalike is like getting a more readily available sebenza...though theyre fairly easy to get.

its a p.o.s

Noctis...buying used doesnt really count as production either.

dont see why you guys are getting into semantics, you know exactly what i mean when i say production...

....no.

camp knife was titanium...the 0551 is titanium, why should we settle for anything less on a xm-18 production version?

i think some simple aesthetic changes, and steel like elmax or vanax is fine, no need to dumb it down THAT much.

154CM would be a good choice. Also, they could use 410 stainless as the liner on the g-10 scale side, and maintain the titanium on the lock side. This might keep the XM-18 guys from freaking out. Also, there would be no reason why they couldn't buy a ZM-18 (catchy, huh?) or 3, for themselves.

I'm suspecting that the next RH/ZT collaboration will take things in a different direction though...

This is not correct. The San Ren Mu ripoff of the Sebenza is nothing like the Gerber/Hinderer collaboration models. Gerber has a business relationship and has permission from Mr. Hinderer to use produce these models. San Ren Mu and Chris Reeve have no such relationship. Also, the Gerbers aren't all that bad. Are they a mass quantity reproduction of the XM-18? No, they are not, but they are of not of piss poor quality for their price and legitimate licensing either.

The thing is that only something like 15 Camp Knives were ever made. Also, the ZT0550/0551 does not have the 4" blade the camp knife did. The XM-18 is obviously the flagship knife for Rick Hinderer and the Gen. 3 models that aren't hand ground are, by definition, already production knives. So I don't think we're going to see a mass produced, fully realized, reproduction of the XM-18 while Mr. Hinderer is still producing them himself. I could be completely wrong. What I would like to see is an all new design from Rick made exclusively for ZT that would incorporate the Spanto grind. That would be fantastic.

Are you talking about a mass produced knife like a spyderco endura or kershaw leek where all dealers carry it and when you order the knife it ships the same day?

Im sure it would be cheaper than the XM-18s on the secondary market. It will still be about the same factory price as the XM-18 if its made with the same specs and material as the XM-18, which is about $350.00.

A hearty "Amen!" to that.
ZT/H Spanto/Flipper/Vanax/Ti on clip side!
Wouldn't care if the other side was pork rind.

I personally would NOT want a ZT production XM-18, as stated its Ricks flagship and a knife you should only be able to get from him IMO.

I'm all for a spanto grind and flipper though..... and maybe some CPM-M4 :)

well i dont mean an exact replica of an xm but similar in ergos. the 0551 is a "production" camp knife though it has a smaller blade, but when you look at a 0551 and the camp knife, you definitely see theyre related.

i mean production like the zt line is...higher end, availablility like a sebenza

i bought gerber/ hinderer the xm look alike....it was very, very disappointing in quality and the blade was way off center, lockup was about 95 % out of the box and it was a little small and difficult to manipulate.

i dont want it to seem like im trying to pick a fight, im just saying that a widely available xm-18 (and more affordable) is something im sure many people would like to see. put it on the same scale that the 0551 is...well what the 0550 will be.

im DYING to get a spanto grind and until ZT and hinderer put one out there, i just cant swing it $$

that aside.

am i the only one who has already decided what knife they will open the 0551 box with? lol

Pvt. Snoballz, I'm just not sure you're in the right line of thinking. You are looking at what the production XM-18's are costing from dealers and on the secondary market. I agree with you that the prices of the production XM-18 from dealers and on the secondary market are ridiculous and inflated. This is due to the extreme demand for the XM-18. If you can get a production XM-18 from Rick, I would say that you are getting an affordable knife. The only problem is that it isn't all that easy to get a knife directly from Rick, again due to the high demand for the knife. This goes the same for almost any custom maker. When you try to contact a maker like Les George, RJ Martin, or Yuna there is usually a wait to get on a list and then a wait for your actual knife.

XM-18's are obviously readily available on the secondary market. There's not a forum I go to that doesn't usually have one or two available in the For Sale section. There's just the problem of the inflated prices that people ask for their XM-18. I can't blame many folks though because they usually buy their's on the secondary market as well and are just trying to get the same price they paid for it. It's a vicious cycle. What it sounds like you want is for ZT (or some other company) to take over production of the XM-18 and keep it at around a $300 - $400 mark, or for Rick to just start pumping them out faster. I highly doubt that either will happen. I do believe he's getting them out as fast as he can.

What I do think will happen eventually, if not with this next knife, is a distinct "Hinderer" looking framelock handle with the spanto grind that everyone so desperately wants and a flipper.

I will make one giant suggestion and I really hope that Rick and Thomas would think about this because I think it would make a great selling point. KVT washers in the flipper. Give it that super smooth, gliding on oiled glass flipper action. ZT / Hinderer / Flipper / Spanto Grind / KVT ball bearing washers.... Just thinking about it makes my flipper finger tingle with anticipation! :D

On a side note. Snoballz, I'm not trying to get into it with you. Just trying to clear some thing up is all.

I can't wait to see another ZT/Hinderer collaboration knife and I know its going to be sweet. Right now I'm just awaiting the 0551....could today be the day when we get that email? Keeping my fingers crossed.
