New ZT0550!!!

Interestingly enough, we have explored the possibility of a 0550 in a more readily available steel. We produce a run that pacifies until the Vanax shows up. I haven't signed off on that, but it's a possibility as I sit here writing today.
Judging by the demand for this knife, you have the permission from a whole host of people to sign off on an S30V blade for this knife... :D

Good news, but then today's awkward steel choices are a result of a panic from a few months back? Enough to influence today's proto-pre-release knives?

CTS (Carpenter Steel) also makes some good stuff. Rick Hinderer uses it in the X-18. My only experience with it is the Manix 2. I guess most companies are experimenting at this point, and see what ends up sticking.

That thread had pictures of enough S30V to stamp a million blades out of, but I didn't see any Vanax or was that Xanax in those piles.

The thread features a trip to a NJ steel yard. The majority of which is Crucible steel (American Made). Vanax steel is of European origin.

So I take it you really like the idea?

Yes, I've just tried to keep my mouth shut during this thread to prevent me from saying embarressing things about which vital body part I might trade for one of these.... oh wait... :o... oops! I really want this, most ZTs just don't speak to me like this one does!

Well guess what, ZT went the strider route and made the stop pin touch only the ti side, big surprise there, seeing as theres no liner on the g10.

The mention of strider was about: if stop pin/g10 equals blade play, its because the stop pin rests solely against the g10 and not on the ti side. I would be surprised if ZT let such a thing slip by, given their long history of robust knives and collabs/shared knowledge with strider.

btw, from a picture you couldn't even tell whether or not a strider (any knife) made contact or not on the g10 side, unless you have 10x magnification lens. In fact, many people own/handle striders and don't even know the stop pin doesn't contact the g10. How you can look at a 600x480 (low rez) picture of a prototype knife and be immediately worried/concerned about potential defects is beyond me.

Your question basically boils down to, will the 0550 be launched with blade play or not? And the answer is pretty obvious if you've owned a ZT before. Of course not, their well engineered, you can rest assured about that.

Clearly, there are a lot of things beyond you, like being able to understand other people's posts. I won't spend any time explaining how you're completely misinterpreting what I've said. That's a personal issue that you'll have to work on on your own time. You can stop trolling now.

Also, I don't care about coating or not, if I don't like the coating, I got sandpaper?

Please don't plant any ideas in anyone's head. I want one that looks like the knife in the picture! :)

Somebody's messing this thread up about Strider stuff that I don't even undestand or care to in a Hinderer / ZT collaboration discussion. :(

I'll add my voice to the growing chorus that would love an S30V version, especially if it meant getting one out sooner. I'm sure the Vanax will prove worth the wait, looking at what info we do have out there and from Thomas' comments regarding the grinding troubles, but I'm rather impatient. I want that sucker in my hand ASAP!

If it's any consolation, I'd pick up the eventual high-end version as well...

A 0550 in a more common Kershaw steel would be just wonderful. :D

Premium exotic steels are all fine and good, but everyday Sandvik and Crucible steels meet my meager needs just fine, too. ;)

Wow.....a homerun for sure. Its like the designers were reading my mind. :D

Absolutely love it.

After seeing the last few offerings from ZT I was wondering if they were going to a place I just dont care for but this collaboration turned that around.

This baby's got it all.

I'll also add there's no need for exotic steels for me. Just stick with old faithfuls and get it out there.

I'm concerned about the screwdriver rear "attachment" Looks like it may be a bit sharp for being on the handle, a bit of a detractor for me, not sure how to remedy that and keep the functionality. I simply worry it could cause undo pain to the hands in certain possible extreme abuse use applications that you may need to use your knife for in dire straits.

That being said my only other issue is the plain jain clip, I like a loop style myself, but the 2 position clip is a winner in my book.

Now I just wish I could find me a real XM-18 as easily as one of these when they are released, that's obviously the biggest drawback. :p

ANd I know it's not a direct spin off of the XM-18, it does resemble the style a lot though.

It's been mentioned a couple times, but I'll say it again because it's easy to miss: the glass breaker (or "screwdriver") won't be on the final product, as per Thomas W many posts back.

Maybe someone that knows how to set up a poll should start a poll thread about steel preferences for this knife. I think Thomas might find that informative. I would do it if I knew how.

I'm generally not too picky about steel in knives - I still use the hell out of my 440A Blur while I hear people scoffing at any steel short of S30V - but I definitely wouldn't mind the wait if it meant seeing a production knife I'd actually like to use with a new, exotic steel. It'd give me, and others like me, a chance to try the stuff out without worrying about the sprint run or limited edition models running out before I got the cash to get ahold of one.

I would also be pretty disappointed if ZT does what spyderco seems to have done with the Manix 2 - When I was looking at the Manix 2, the XHP 'sprint run' cost double or more of what the production model cost from the retailers I was looking at.
