Hello bladeforums , I'm Eric and new to the forums. Been reading for a couple months and am happy to join. I've been collecting knives since I was a kid and lately I've been buying more and more. My wife has actually giving me an allowance but find myself lying ,cheating and stealing (not really) to raise my spending limit for the month. Ever since finding bladeforums it's gotten worse ,I have been telling her and myself that this is the last one and things of that nature. It's mildly upsetting but it could always be worse. Sorry to be dragging this on but what I'm asking is this. Do others have this problem? And also does anyone have advise for curbing my knife appetite? Thx

You're toast, buddy. Give in, resistance is futile. :):D:p

And welcome to the forums!! The greatest place on the internet!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The only advice I could give for curbing it is to stay off the forums, specifically the exchange. But, then again, what kind of person would I be to tell someone to stay OFF the forums?!;)

Haha don't say that ! You know I used to be good for a month or two but now it's bad. I have a Millie coming and I am looking at other knives already and haven't even got it yet ... wth

If you are reading this, It's too late. Watch Nick Shabazz on youtube. His knife reviews may prevent you from spending some money.

I've watched almost every vid by him. He is great , very honest and very critical. And grew to love the New York Jewish accent lol. Unfortunately once I have a knife in my crosshairs it's all but bought

Welcome Eric! May I suggest reading up on your various favorite knife companies to get to know what they're about. Some of them you won't like, and it will be easier to avoid spending money on them.

I say, keep an open mind and a closed wallet! (The closed wallet part is something I struggle with)

Lots of great people and info here. Hope you enjoy.

Just wait until you have a list you have to update every few days :)

Interesting advise, thx

It's not bad til it takes you longer to decide which knife than which shirt. Once it takes you longer to decide which knife/watch combo than it takes your wife to fix her hair and her make-up, you're beyond rehab. "open mind closed wallet" is a wonderful philosophy if you have the will power. I have been fighting my "problem" for years and it took a turn for the worse when I discovered BF. I did find that trading feeds my addiction almost as much as buying and keeps some of the pressure away from "she who looks over me". Good luck and welcome to bladeforums:thumbsup:

Knives are great. They are fun to use, sharpen, and discuss. They are useful tools.
They are also just stuff. If you're willing to compromise and potentially erode trust between you and your wife for the sake of a hobby, I think some instrospection is in order and perhaps better advice than you'll get from strangers on the internet.

How's that saying go? Better to beg forgiveness than... um... I forget.

I'm always begging for forgiveness.

I suffer the same pain my friend. No wife i'm on the younger side (23). But i keep telling myself that this knife will be the last one after i purchase another expensive knife. I think to myself that it is all the knife i could want and want nothing more. And then i discover another knife :/ For example i finally splashed on a large sebenza 21 thinking it is the ultimate knife and that I won't want another. 2 weeks later i buy a ZT. I can't take this habit lol i like it too much!

luckily I only have 2 watches but I do have issues choosing which knife to take for the day. Every night I go and decide what knife to use for dinner and Maria (my wife ) just laughs at me

Just be glad if you have no kids , new car mortgage, and credit cards for your run down house you bought

I had the same problem between my knife budget and my wife. I struggled for a long time to reconcile my desire for more knife dollars and her watchful eye. Fortunately I was able to sell her for a great price and the buyer threw in a full custom, a couple of mid-techs and several production knives to seal the deal.

Be warned...we are enablers.

Haha you're right. But i'm not exactly "free" to do what I would like. I'm trying to save for a house in a few years and I bought a new car 6 months ago. My biggest hobby are cars so that hurts my pocket the most. But you're only young once so i'm enjoying myself a little bit

I wasn't making a joke. What means more to you, the wife or the urge to "collect them all?" Are you sure she wouldn't be ok with the hobby? Could she be open to change?
It's no fun when a spouse forbids the other spouse's hobby. It leads to resentment and bad stuff. Neither of you should have that much control over the other.
But if you feel like you have to be dishonest with her... that's seriously no bueno.

That said, if you want advice on curbing the hobby, I'd say you look at each knife in terms of what niche it covers. If you have an open niche, get a knife to fill it. If you come upon a knife and its niche is already filled, pass or sell the existing knife to fund the replacement.
It helps avoid duplicates and accumulation just for accumulation's sake.
