Hi Eric,
I found BF about a year ago and I can assure you it's been tough to stay on a budget. Every few months I'll post something about leaving the Exchange...I usually last a few weeks.

If I really need motivation to stay away, I'll pull my PayPal statments for the last year and remember that not long ago the thought of spending more than $70 on a knife was "crazy."

Whenever I start browsing the Exchange, even out of cutiosity, I'm a goner!

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Now how to approach your wife and tell her your fantasy of a threesome involves M390 or S110V ... and the frame lock you mentioned has nothing to do with Fifty Shades of Grey ... ummm ... good luck?

Seriously it can get a bit addictive if you let it ... just when you think you've found "the ONE" ... there's another that catches your eye and sounds like a must have.

The only good news I can tell you at least in my case ... was after a bit of trial and error I came to find the types of knives ... types of steels ... and just which work best for me and now although the want is still there at times I better know what I'll use and makes it easier to join in the discussions without feeling left out because I'm not holding that exact knife.

Hope you jump in and enjoy!

Luckily my wife has a bit of a shoe and clothing habit. Granted she travels a lot for work but most of the stuff is non work related. I just keep an internal tab in my mind and if she questions me on a knife purchase, I point to the cut up boxes from all her clothing and shoe deliveries. I tend to let them pile up for a while before recycling them. Gotta go full Jedi Mind Trick on her!

That and I show her a knife I've been looking at on my phone after she's had a Margarita or two and she gives me the "OK" . Knife has usually been bought by the time we leave the restaurant! :D

I wasn't making a joke. What means more to you, the wife or the urge to "collect them all?" Are you sure she wouldn't be ok with the hobby? Could she be open to change?
It's no fun when a spouse forbids the other spouse's hobby. It leads to resentment and bad stuff. Neither of you should have that much control over the other.
But if you feel like you have to be dishonest with her... that's seriously no bueno.

That said, if you want advice on curbing the hobby, I'd say you look at each knife in terms of what niche it covers. If you have an open niche, get a knife to fill it. If you come upon a knife and its niche is already filled, pass or sell the existing knife to fund the replacement.
It helps avoid duplicates and accumulation just for accumulation's sake.
Wow I don't really know what to say to this first part but the second part about the niche is an interesting idea. I basically have done it but I'm collecting every type of steel as my niche.

Now this is good advise

Welcome to BF!
Yeah, I hear you... Once you move past basic production knives and into Mid-Tech and Custom blades it can get really ugly.

I can offer you this: Learn to get really picky before you buy something....
Read as many opinion posts as you can, look at pix, check specs, read and watch any review posts and vids and always try to "sleep on it" before pulling the trigger. I've found that over the years I've worked out what I really like in folders and fixed blades, and it's helped me to pass on a lot of offerings.

No. My wife is probably the best wife ever. I show her a picture of a knife her reply is usually " just buy it". If its pretty its "oh yea get that". We just had a baby so my spending has been less and I use my own funny money account for it (knives guns watches) mostly. But its still our money at the end of the day. SHe knows im pretty responsible and I sell stuff just as fast as I buy it. That and having me buy it is probably way better than hearing me talk about it. Shes a smart lady.
I think she knows by telling me yes all the time I dont feel the impulse to get stuff as much. I mean I only bought 3 knives this week so thats pretty good right. Last week was 4.

Haha it's funny you say that because I notice when my wife says just get it ,the knife somehow becomes less alluring!? God there is something seriously wrong w me lol.

Similar here. I pretty much have free reign up to to a point. If I'm spending over $250 to $300, I go Jedi on her. Less expensive knives I usually just buy at will. She handles the bookkeeping so she sees everything!

Welcome to BF.

For me, I bought a lot of knives at the beginning, found what I like and didn't like, then sold some off to "thin the herd".

If it really gets bad (it never did for me, I'm cheap and I've never paid more then $120 for a knife), you can always implement the "if I buy one, I must sell one (or two)" strategy.

Switch to collecting old slipjoints, you'll be spending much less because they'll cost a heck of a lot less, plus you'll have to find them first at yardsales flea markets and thrift stores...ect.

Hello bladeforums , I'm Eric and new to the forums. Been reading for a couple months and am happy to join. I've been collecting knives since I was a kid and lately I've been buying more and more. My wife has actually giving me an allowance but find myself lying ,cheating and stealing (not really) to raise my spending limit for the month. Ever since finding bladeforums it's gotten worse ,I have been telling her and myself that this is the last one and things of that nature. It's mildly upsetting but it could always be worse. Sorry to be dragging this on but what I'm asking is this. Do others have this problem? And also does anyone have advise for curbing my knife appetite? Thx

Welcome to BFC Eric!!!!!
Just about everyone has been in your shoes, so pretty much you're screwed . The only thing that will curb your appetite is common sense and you don't have that right now ;)
So, here's what you do until your senses come around, buy a gold membership, sell a knife every once in a while and that will feed your addiction so you can keep buying more knives. That will keep momma happy, mmmmm somewhat, and you get to add to your allowance ( in theory anyway ).
I've found that either you're a knife knut or not, and if you're here, you know what category you belong in. It's sometimes hard to explain why you like knives so much to other people that don't understand.
Have fun, enjoy what you have and be prepared to go deep into the rabbit hole.

To put it mildly my wife disproves of me spending on "useless" knives. I have build a sizable collection then sold a lot of them and left only grails. My strategy is to get grails only and pass on anything in between. Most grails are hard to obtain so as a result I did not buy a new knife in a few years.
Also, ifs I want a knife which is not a grail but something that I still would like to own - I can sell stuff from my own collection to purchase it.

It's easy.
All you have to do is decide what is your grail and acquire it.
Simple.
Like me. I decided what I wanted most and finally got it.
What's that you say . . . ?
You say "Have I bought any more knives ?" "Am I planning on buying more knives in the future ?".
. . . ahhhhhhh . . . I can't talk anymore right now . . . gotta . . . er . . . start some laundry . . . and something is boiling over on the stove. Yah . . . that's the ticket.

Welcome to the forum !
Remember . . . find your grail. Everything will be OH SO MUCH BETTER after you do.

Welcome to the forums, Eric!

I myself joined BF only a couple of years ago. Since then I learned a lot about different knives, designs, steels, and maintenance tips here on BF. As the result, I have bought too many knives (to me and probably to my wife, too) like you and too many accessories during the last 2 years.

I was going after the ultimate edge holding steel at the beginning and went from ATS-34 to S110V. Then I realized that I need to sharpen them properly and bought a bunch of sharpening tools. This was followed by my fascination to the frame lock design, which really reveals the level of fit and finish of a knife easily. Naturally, I went to a midtech/CRK route, came to a realization of my grail knife (a well-crafted 3.3” Wharncliffe front flipper frame lock knife with a thin edge), and got the first custom just like that.

I am quite happy with it and with my other favorite, Umnumzaan, and hoping that this acquisition makes my craving subside a little while. It is working so far. When a new knife catches my eye, I say to myself that it ain’t be better nor as good to those favorites. I was pretty close to order a TiLock Yesterday, but able to fight the rage.

What is really bad (and really good at the same time) is that there are so many good knives and knife makers out there these days. I am not sure if I can resist my craving at all when front flippers come out from CCCK and JG Customs in the near future. Oh, and Gough Customs may be making folders right now! Really really bad :)

I guess the bottom line is that you cannot do anything but keep buying, and just damn about your living this fantastic era.

It is a good time in the history of knives
