I'm pretty knew to the knife scene. I'm trying to find a military/survival/camping knife that has the following characteristics:

Fixed blade, 5-7"
Very durable
Under $50
Kydex sheath would be nice.

What are your experiences with the Glock field knife? Should I get something from KaBar?

Thanks,

Newbie Steve Koski

PS If you have questions on Glocks, please ask me. I can probably return the favor there.

Steve,
Welcome to the Forums.
There are no stupid questions.
It is going to be tough to find what you are looking for in that price range.
Maybe someone here has a few good choices for you, but, unfortunately I don't. Sorry.

The knife that immediately comes to my mind is the Cold Steel SRK. It is everything that you asked for.
6" blade, very tough, great steel. The sheath is concealex which is sort of like kydex. I think you will be happy with this knife. I think discountknives.com has them in concealex for $49.99. You can see a picture of it from coldsteel.com but they probably show the one with a leather sheath.

The glock is a "sharpened prybar" which doesn`t allow for very fine work.It would be tough to use as a cooking knife. You couldn`t go wrong with the cold steel or ka bar.A way to save money would be to post on the knives wanted to buy forum.sometimes you can pick up a tough knife for a good price.
Hope this helps,
David

Welcome Steve. That is not a stupid question by any means . In fact, it's rather smart. The people in these forums know and use knives of all kinds and all price ranges.
More people should ask questions before spending their money. Stay away from the glock. There are better knives for the money.

Howdy Steve,
The Ka-Bar is tough to beat at that price point- good performer for most field tasks, takes abuse with relative good humor & has a pedigree that is hard to beat. It's a good knife to have in any collection, large or small. Cold Steel makes some good using knives that will leave enough cash left over for you to still feed your Glock. Poke around here on the Forums & check some of the purveyors & you'll get a good sense of what's out there & ask lots more questions- that's why this forum exists!
Cheers,
Mike

In this price range...Cold Steel SRK most assuredly. Go a little higher and you can get a Fallkniven A-1. An outstanding knife for the price (about $79.95US).

I would agree with the above posts. Go with the Ka-Bar or one of Cold Steel's fixed blades.

And for a variation on a theme.....

Look at Ka-Bar's Warthog.

After reading more and more you will find out that $ 50.00 is not enough and you may end up with knife in totally different price range... Nothing exceptional here.

PS: And welcome!

I second the vote on the Cold Steel SRK. I know it doesn't have much glamour, but to be quite honest the Cold Steel Bushmaster is a pretty darn good survival knife at $20! The SRK is a nice knife, though. A friend has one and he likes it a lot. I believe it comes with a Kydex sheath now, or at least it is an option.

You can even check the Cold Steel catalogue and pick up a "factory second" on the Survival Rescue Knife (SRK) for $39.95. I bought a second and have noted that the only flaw in mine is a uneven grind on the false edge, otherwise, a great knife!

If you are serious about your price range I believe you would do well with a Ka-Bar "Black Series" fixed blade. The #1214 with serrations is a lot of knife, with kydex, for the money. Shop the internet and I think you will do good on this knife.

Check out the Buck Night Hawk.
Because of its extreme hardness it may not serve as well as a pry bar, but as a corrosion resistant field and self defense knife, none of the above can touch it.

i can agree on the cold steel. the kabar would be good and you might check out the ontario knife spec plus series. i have one and it holds up as good as a kabar in my opinion. you can find them in the $30-40 range if you shop around. no offense to the above post, but i don't think the buck nighthawks are worth what you pay. i wish you luck in the search for the perfect knife. i've been looking for years.

Well, I bought a Cold Steel SRK from discountknives.com for $50 plus $3.50 shipping. I almost bought a factory second SRK directly from Cold Steel ($39.99 plus $7 shipping), but they didn't know what type of sheath would be sent with it. I fugured it was worth the extra 6 bucks to get a first run knife with the Concealex sheath.

From the reputation that Cold Steel has in your minds, I'm sure I'll be happy with this knife. Thanks very much for your help.

No Glock questions? C'mon, let me return the favor.

Take care,

well, since you insisted, what's the blade steel on the glock? and how does the sheath and retention clip hold up?

Barteaux Machete.

Thicker and stronger than your average machete, fully insulated handle. Very nice.

David1967,

I disagree. I think about $50 is, and should be, enough. The Ka-bar can be had for $30, Cold Steel SRK for around $60, and I believe any knife in the Spec Plus series for under $50.

I feel that if you spend much more than $50(say $200 plus for a SOG Bowie or Trident) then you're too afraid of harming the knife to use it freely. Well, I am at least. I'm almost afraid to get my Ka-bar dirty because I love it so much.
