Newbie. Looking for an easy opening, medium (< 4 inch) length, EDC, with "class"

The Persian looks WAY nicer in person, even, than in the pictures.

I find the Volpe, is the opposite.

I bought the Twitch XL because I love my Flash II, and because it is VERY thin.

It hides very well in your pocket.

It's a great little slicer too.

The only problem I've found on it is SOG's incessant need for self-promotion, as evidenced in the clip.

It really annoys me to have SOG proudly displayed on my clip. It kind-of removes all doubt about what's in my pocket.

But that's my only complaint, and once I dig out my dremmel tool, I'll fix it!

Hmm did some looking around ... how about ....

Moki knives?
Seki-Cut knives?
Kershaw Splinter (since you like wood)?
Al Mar Osprey, Hawk, or Falcon?
Spyderco S?
A Buck custom folder (500 series or so)?

If you want something non-pointy you may want to consider a wharncliffe folder. AG Russell also has some interesting things you might want to take a look at.

Mcusta knives come in right around your price. Try japaneseknivesdirect.com for a good selection.

I'd second the Al Mar recommendation. Their ultralight series comes in two blade styles and 3 sizes. If you want the Osprey, you can get several different types of handle scales, incl wood.

They get knocked sometimes because they're "only" AUS8 blades, but that's a fine steel for office use (light-medium duty slicing). It's easy to resharpen and it can get quite sharp.

I've got a Nomad and a mini-SERE and they're both fine knives, although the blade steel is VG10, not AUS8. But they're also created for a different type of use than the ultralights.

Opportunist, being a linerlock, is very easy to open. It doesn't have a pocket clip but it's so small you can carry it in the pocket without noticing it.
Good deal IMHO but be prepared it's VERY small (see this thread).

Boy you people must get pretty bored talking about knives all day long. :p

ThreeWorlds - Black Quince Kopa - man ... this thing looks beautiful. But because it's so small and so $$$ I think I'm going to have to leave that one as a suggested anniversary / bday present to SWMBO. :-)

FireInvestigator - the Microtech Manual Mini Socom looks cool but a little to military for me.

kicwk - Kershaw Chive, Black Handle w/Gold Accents - that thing looks just about perfect ... DOH! It's a chive, not a scallion. The chive's are a little too small for what I'm looking for.

tomcrx - the apple coral leek is hot. A little too $$$.

Lava - thanks for the description of the axis mechanism. I've never owned a knife that was well enough adjusted that you could flick it open. That sounds cool. The mini persian could be a contendah.

ThreeWorlds -
Seki-Cut knives - yum. the "little blue liner lock" is very nice and around $70.
Kershaw Splinter - dayum. this is almost perfrect. if it had speed assist, this would be it.
Al Mar Osprey, etc ... very nice! a little too precious for my budget.
A Buck custom 500 - these are nice! some very interesting pieces.
wharncliffe folder - hmmm.

Archer26 - Browning Ice Storm is a little to tactical looking for me

Greg - mmmm lots of fancy nice knives! seki cut and mcusta look beautiful

huugh - thanks for pointing me to that thread on the opportunist. the size actually looks about perfect for me. it's back in the running!

Decisions, decisions. I think I'm going to have to order up like 10 knives online, take them for a test drive, and then it will be a sad day when I have to return the ones I can't keep.

The Benchmade 440 - Opportunist is nice. Also look at the Benchmade 941. It's a nice office EDC.

If the size suits you then get the Opportunist

Make your self a custom 110 on Buck's website, I dreamed one up, an dit was like $80, great deal, great knife.

Benchmade 710

3.9", so it's just a hair under your max length. Drop point with a very very slight recurve. Satin plain edge. It's extremely slim and compact, practically disappears in my pocket and has never gotten in the way. I have small to medium size hands and it fits perfectly, though it will still fill out a larger hand just fine. It's very deceptive to the eye, it folds up much more than it would seem. It looks a little tacticool, though I think it has more of a "elegant tactical" look, if that makes sense - clean and crisp, yet still means business. The G10 scales are very grippy without being rubbery and the liner has treads that work without being in the way. And it will take a lot of abuse, I can attest to that since I abuse mine unreasonably so ;)

D2 steel is great stuff, a little annoying to sharpen, though there are many other steels that have given me much more of a headache. Holds an edge very well. If you aren't into sharpening, and you can live without it for a week or two, Benchmade's Lifesharp is awesome. Couple bucks for shipping and they'll clean it out and sharpen it back to where it's practically new again.

When someone explains the axis lock with words, it sounds unreasonably complicated. When try it for the first time, you'll probably think it is. 5-10 minutes of practice and examination, and you'll likely never want any other type of opening/closing system again in your life. That's how it went for me, and more than a few people who've played with mine.

Do a search on the forums here, and you'll see a *huge* amount of praise.

I got mine from here at knifeworks for 108 shipped.

Benchmade Mini Grip, and I'll make that suggestion once again, having just gotten a Ritter Mini Grip. This one has the thumbstuds, which I generally don't favor, but they work well, are spaced nicely and are very usable on this knife. The scales while not G10 have a similar feel, unlike the full sized Grip. The icing on the cake is the Axis lock!

My next suggestion is the Mini Dejavoo which is a classy looking knife. One had opener, Liner Lock, G10 scales, smooth as butter, and uses a hole for opening. I just picked one up at New Graham Knives for $87.00 plus shipping, a geat price on a great knife. It isn't as big in person as it looks in the pics, 3.25" blade, and a perfectly sized handle ,for me anyways. Another plus is that it has a low pocket carry clip.

Also take a look at the BM710 as recommended in the post above. I've never handlesd one but it is highly recommended and it will be my next knife purchase.

Keep your eyes on the For Sale page, there are alot of good deals out there that will save you a few bucks.

How about................

Case MID Folding Hunter (I emphasize mid as there is a larger Folding Hunter). The handles can be had in several different materials. It has thumbstuds.

Case Russlock--Again, can be had with several different handle materials

Keshaw Leek--Different color handles are available (the smoke grey or black/blue handle may be to your liking).

Benchmade 707 Sequel....maybe too tactical looking for your office use.

Hope this helps.

If you want class you are going to be in the high end of your price range.
A mini Sebenza would be perfect but is about 300$ although you can get al of your money back if you decide you don't like it.
I paid 300$ for my last knife and feel I got an amazing deal. It would be perfect for your use.
It is a Kirby Lambert custom Whar and it is incredible.

Until you experience something as well made as a custom or Sebbie you will have a hard time judging other knives. If the price is to much I would stick with the higher quality
production knives like Benchmade(that Opportunist looks cool) Spyderco or a Fallkniven U2.
