Newbie Spyderco Question

Some guys like the holes.

Other guys like the Studs. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

:D

Over time I ve come to prefer blade holes in Spyderco s and other knives for one handed opening. Usually easier than the studs for me to open.

Gentlefolk,

As a newbie knife person, I have been pondering the Spyderco hole and been wondering "why"?

I am not trying to start a flame war, but it appears a lot of blade real estate is given over to a rather inefficient way to open a blade. I assume the purpose is to slip part of the thumb through the hole to open the blade.

Is this better than a stud employed by others, or is it more of a brand identifying feature?

Thx!
1 One handed opening.

2. Ambidextrous opening.

3. Easy to manufacture, no thumb studs or flippers.

4. Very fast and reliable.

5. Looks cool!

Welcome to the BF party, enjoy.

What knives are you now using or collecting?

Hi Pier23, Playsharp,

Welcome to our forum. Certainly if you're a knife afi, giving Spyderco a try is not the worse thing you could do. ;)

Think about it from a design standpoint--it adds performance and ease of use while subtracting weight and reducing parts (compared to a thumb stud). That's an impressive combination.

I used to dislike spyderco in general for this exact reason. I though it was ugly and served no purpose. Then I bought a military and fell in love with spyderco. I can flip my military open quicker than some of my flippers. Do not judge a book by its cover.

I used to hate the Spyder hole until I got a Spyderco. Never went back. When I get my BM I will be getting one with the hole. For me it goes, hole > stud > flipper.

I thought Spyderco was ugly in the same way I thought Glock was ugly. Then you try them, and you find the beauty in the functionality. A Delica just works, and you start to notice all of the subtle things that make it great as you use it. The real test of ergonomics is when you use "features" of the design without thinking about it or even knowing they existed in the first place. The hole provides an sleek solution to 1 handed opening AND gives you a jimmped thumb ramp. It's really genius, and the leaf shape blade really grows on you.

Whoa! I don't get this "UGLY" business. There is absolutely nothing ugly about my Gayle Bradley, Citadel, Valloton, etc., nor my Glock 34. They look great, IMHO. And the function is superb as well.

Interesting question. I am an open assist addict, but know a lot of spyderco faithful and am willing to give one a try.

I have been using thumb studs for a long time. Now my EDC rotation has more Spyderholes than anything else. The hole is the most efficient way to open the blade, especially the larger holes such as in the PM2 and Manix 2. For me the Delica is less so because it has a smaller hole.

It takes me a long time to situate my finger to use a big knife with a flipper, and sometimes it takes me many tries on a knife with thumb studs to get my thumb just right so it pushes on the stud and doesn't come off. The Spyderhole opens every time. The only knife I have that rivals the large spyderhole is the Kershaw Blur and the sabertooth tiger thumbstuds on that one grab your thumb pretty well.

Nailed it!!!! John

Gotta love the Spydie hole. Even my user Benchmades have it.

Back to the original question about it taking up real-estate on the blade... What else would be there otherwise and worthwhile? KISS Theory at its best. :)

Hey, apologies for starting a thread and ignoring the comments...I have been looking for this thread and just now found it

Haven't quite figured out the structure here yet.

I have not played with Spydercos yet, hence the inquiry. As for knives, blame my wife. I lost a 30+ year old Case folder, my constant companion every day...lost somehow on a horse ride I think. My wife replaced that with a Gerber folder, then followed up with a Cold Steel Code 4. This kinda lit my world as I saw there was more than Buck or Case out there. Recently I added a ZT 0300, and have ground to a halt with indecision.

For the sheer why-not-ednis of it, I have always wanted a good bowie, and could more legitimately use some type of stout machete or brush/sapling removal blade for clearing trails on the farm. Ideas?

As for the Spyderco, I guess I need a gateway drug recommendation, a 3.5incher or so would be a good place to start. And maybe something smaller, maybe 2in or so?

Then try the Paramilitary 2 or those knives with the FRN handles like the Endura, Delica and Stretch.
The Salt series are rust proof knives.

Try and you'll understand why we love the spyderhole......:D

Thx! So what is the approach -insert thumb and push or grab with thumb and index finger and pull?

Are they assisted opening?

a. insert thumb and push
b. insert thumb and flick
c.grab the hole with your thumb and index finger and do the spyder drop
d. watch youtube videos and you'll see different ways how to quickly open a Spyderco

:D

The Para Military 2 will be recommended to you most. The lock is awesome, the steel is very very good, and the fit and finish are great. It somehow seems to fit everyone's hands perfectly large or small. I did a comparison for Newbies between 4 Spydies, I was brand new just a month ago to Spyderco Knives. I ordered my first 1-8-15, I ordered another today. That's 5 Spydies in less than a month, I was a SOG/Cold Steel/Benchmade guy. I haven't looked at any other knives since I snapped a few shots of my SOGs with my first purchase, a Delica 4.

Here is the comparison thread by the way:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1258330-A-comparison-of-the-Delica-4-Tenacious-Para-Military-2-and-Manix-2-for-Newbies

And a couple pics of all 4 together open and closed:
