Newbie Spyderco Question

If you get a Compression lock you just pinch the lock and let the blade drop and keep it going with momentum until it reaches open lock. Same to close. Spyderdrops all day long.

For me, it's the Nike swoosh of knives! It looks different and adds a little something. Hole works better than studs. Flipper works better than hole. And I own a diaper full of Spydercos that I love.

OK, it has all been said regarding "why the hole", and I would attempt to further elaborate but no one can help you "get Spyderco" better than the man himself … take a look at this …

Regarding your first two Spydercos, since you mentioned 3.5" as a starting point I would say the PM2 for sure.
And then maybe an FRN Dragonfly or Delica. The Dragonfly epitomizes the "little big knife" (LBK) in my opinion, and the Delica has long been praised as possibly the perfect all around EDC.

*Note on the PM2 compression lock. Find a video that demos its operation, there are many out there. I say this because the natural approach for some folks is to try and unlock the knife with your fingers still wrapped around the handle - DO NOT do this … watch the videos and you'll see what I mean.

Recently I added a ZT 0300

Nice knife choice. I carried an 0301 daily for a year. Just got bored with it, so looked around for a replacement. I picked up a PM2 and carried it for a few weeks. Great knife, slim, light, great lock, slices better than any of the ZTs I had. Can be flicked open faster than the 0300 series with a little break in and practice, if that is your "thing".

Since I was so used to the 301 I found the PM2 a little small. So after a couple weeks I picked up a Military. Perfection for me. Great ergononics, great size, about half the weight of a 301, slim, carries in the pocket perfectly. Slices like a kitchen knife. Again, can be thumb flicked quickly. About 99.9999% of the time I have it on me. Usually paired with my Manbug. Sometimes with the PM2 or Native 5. Should have my Manix 2 here on Friday, so that might be a good companion knife as well.

If you like the size of your 300 , the Military will give it some stiff competition for pocket time.

Sadly, the Para looks like the perfect gateway drug...:-(((...)))))))

The Para Military 2 will be recommended to you most. The lock is awesome, the steel is very very good, and the fit and finish are great. It somehow seems to fit everyone's hands perfectly large or small. I did a comparison for Newbies between 4 Spydies, I was brand new just a month ago to Spyderco Knives. I ordered my first 1-8-15, I ordered another today. That's 5 Spydies in less than a month, I was a SOG/Cold Steel/Benchmade guy. I haven't looked at any other knives since I snapped a few shots of my SOGs with my first purchase, a Delica 4.

Here is the comparison thread by the way:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1258330-A-comparison-of-the-Delica-4-Tenacious-Para-Military-2-and-Manix-2-for-Newbies

And a couple pics of all 4 together open and closed:

Well, the vid stopped half-way through, but I got the development of the hole. NEAT story! I am getting the idea. It wasn't some marketing whimsy.

Well, I DONT carry the ZT 0300..:D

I got it because I loved the look and yeah...its an NCIS knife, what can I say? I also have a PPK/s.....

The 300 is in my heavy-duty farm knife role, but since the Cold Steel Code 4 my wife got me is similarly sized, I kinda need to use that at least until the new is worn off...

So, sadly, my "best" knife is kind of an objet d'art right now. My daily carry is a $30 Gerber my wife got me. It has a decent blade, and after I worked the action a coupla hundred times, I can get it open with one hand.

My work place has a size limit on knives...go figure...anyway, the first time I took out the Gerber to open boxes, it got scrutinized by my boss to make sure it was "legal". The place would prob call the SWAT team if I flipped out my ZT!

Sorry to hear that. My Boss "prefers" we leave our handguns in our cars. Which are parked 50 yards away, and we work outdoors. That is our weapons policy.

So the PM2 might be your best bet for a first Spyderco.

Well, I am getting intrigued! I might have to re-direct my non-existant knife budget...

Hey, apologies for starting a thread and ignoring the comments...I have been looking for this thread and just now found it

Haven't quite figured out the structure here yet.

I have not played with Spydercos yet, hence the inquiry. As for knives, blame my wife. I lost a 30+ year old Case folder, my constant companion every day...lost somehow on a horse ride I think. My wife replaced that with a Gerber folder, then followed up with a Cold Steel Code 4. This kinda lit my world as I saw there was more than Buck or Case out there. Recently I added a ZT 0300, and have ground to a halt with indecision.

For the sheer why-not-ednis of it, I have always wanted a good bowie, and could more legitimately use some type of stout machete or brush/sapling removal blade for clearing trails on the farm. Ideas?

As for the Spyderco, I guess I need a gateway drug recommendation, a 3.5incher or so would be a good place to start. And maybe something smaller, maybe 2in or so?

Get yourself a paramilitary 2 and a Dragonfly 2 and you will be instantly addicted! Don't say you weren't warned...

As to "why the hole"? Because it is the most efficient and ingenious opening method in existance. After a week with a spyderco you will cringe at the thought of going back to thumb studs! :D

I'm somewhat new to knives as well. When I started all I heard about Spyderco I was good but I really choked at the way they looked. I thought the hole was so ugly. I went ahead and got one. I love the Spyder hole now. I'm kinda to the point that I want to try out some brands that I don't have but when it come to shelling out the money I usually end up with a new Spyderco in my pocket. Favorite is dragonfly 2. Second is para 2. Want to try a southard but that would be my most expensive knife to date. I'm sure I'll get there.

I love my Spyderco's, but I don't think the "Hole", is the best opener. I would prefer if the knife had both the hole and thumb stud. Like on some Striders. It's hard to use only the hole with gloves in my experiences.
