So yes i am quite a newbie to the forum and the knife world i have had at least 2 knifes since i was young now im becoming more interested in having the right ones i was looking on ebay and i came down to a choice between SMITH and WESSON EXTREME OPS Tanto Model # CK5TBSD
and the Spyderco byrd CARA CARA G-10 not sure which one would be better thank you for the help

Welcome!
Spyderco is a great starting point. Some knuts even finish there. :)

I don't have any of those knives. But the general opinion on this forum for S&W is between value for the money and crap.
The general opinion for a Byrd knife is between value for money and extreme value for money.
Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, the search function is disabled, (which I love; you get the same questions over and over and this generates lots of traffic to general) but you can use Google advanced search.
For instance:

Get the Cara Cara in G-10 one of the best values out there. Also look at the Tenacious also by Spyderco.

welcome aboard. Between the two knives you mentioned, the Spyderco is the better of the two.

thank you for the info i had a s&w which was stolen from me not a big loss it was pretty worn and i also have a dark ops interceptor but its too large for edc

Look around where you can. Buy what you like. Use it. Decide if it's really what you wanted and go from there. I don't believe anyone here has just one(1) knife. We are all still looking for the perfect EDC. It will be fun for us to see what you come up with through time. Have fun & welcome!

Welcome to BF!

+1 on the Spyderco.

Also, check out Kershaw and Benchmade for affordable, well-made EDC's as well.

Here are some of the high value knives that alot of people on these forums hold in high regards - may want to check them out :) But from your two choices, I'd definitely go with the Cara Cara.

Kershaw Zing
Kershaw OD1
Kershaw Skyline
Boker Trance
Spyderco Tenacious
Benchmade Monochrome
Byrd (any, but Cara Cara seems to be the most popular)
KaBar Folding Dozier

If it says "Spyderco" it means a couple things. Value, ergonomics, sharp, decent steel up to some of the best on the market, sharp, collectible
Sharp!

If your just starting out in this crazy hobby rest assured that a spydie is a good investment! Youll probably have more than one;)

If you want to know whats out there, tell the good folks here what some of your normal cutting tasks are and a price range and watch the magic!:)

I dont have a Spyderco .. But I have only carried Smith and Wesson .. I just both the new MAGIC spring assisted knife which I really like .. I have the extreme ops tanto .. I carried it for a few weeks .. Its pretty sharp out of the box and the serrated it sharp too .. I use it a lot to cut tape off boxes, and it works for me .. But I only paid 10 at Smokey Mountain Knife Works (since its 2 hours away from me) ... But I have been wanting to get a Spyderco to carry .. I havent had any issues with the Smith and Wesson though ..

Just my $.02

Erm, I'd steer away from the Pocket Bushman as a beginning / primary folder. It is more of a niche knife that should be added once your collection is already somewhat established. Then again, that is just a general suggestion, if a person really digs the blade - then go with whatever makes you happy :D

I can't speak to your specific model of S&W knife, but I can say that Big 5, a local sporting goods store, frequently runs a sale on knives that are described as S&W Extreme Ops. The sale price is typically around $10 or $12. The "regular" price is supposedly $50 or so. My experience buying a $12 knife at Big 5 (not an S&W) is that the knife was OK for the price but at least one level and possibly two levels down from a Cara Cara. For me, it's no contest: Cara Cara wins.

Stick with spyderco. You can talk to Sal here on BF and have great customer service. S&W is not primarily a knife company whereas Spyderco is, so I think that you will get a better product with Spyderco. Spending the extra money in the beginning will save in the end. Just my $0.02

The S&W knives are crap, no matter the price. If you get one for $15 at Big 5, you won't have overpaid, but it's still crap. Not nearly as crappy as MTech or Master Cutlery (which are simply unsafe).

You can get a Byrd or Kershaw for a slight bit more cash, and it's twice the knife as a S&W.
