Newer Emerson's fit and finish

I never had a problem with Emerson's finish, but yeah, some of those locks were problematic

Yeah the locks , even if early,, seems to move over very very quickly.

I have several with slipping locks as well. Also the detent not working because of the detent spring ball on the non locking side.

Bascially numerous issues with the lockbars . I think that the lockbars are the main problem with Emerson knives.. If he could solve that, there would be a whole bunch of new/old customers coming back to Emersons.

I've had limited experience with Emerson knives. Owned a CQC7 2006 and recently got a 2013 CQC7. My boss has had several Emersons (CQC8, CQC15) which I have examined closely. Anyway, all the fit and finish issues I've seen were always directed toward the g10 handles or the liners. From my own limited experience with Emerson knives I've never seen any issues with the blades. I looked at my new CQC7 with 10x loupe and the blade is a thing of beauty. The grind lines are absolutely perfect. And yes the f&f has improved over the years. I think Emerson has seen the market place tighten up.

Haven't had any issues with any of mine, new or old :) (Super 8, CQC-15, Super Commander, standard 8, super 7)

I just got a new Journeyman with standoffs and the lockup is super earlier! So early it barely catches. If I give it a good flick open with the wrist it locks up better but the lock sticks bad. So bad I have to put a coin or key in to pop the lock free. Anyone else have this issue? Love the knife though!

Actually I wish all of mine where like yours.

When they start off like yours they turn out to be keepers!:) It is the ones with a later lockup you have to worry about as the lockbars all move over very fast on emersons. ...But the Journeymans are different!!!.. they have a different lockbar breach interface. I find that the way the lockbar is on the Journeyman the lockbars do not move over as fast as other Emersons. Which is a good thing!

#1 -The lockbar will move over , if you wave it a few times.

#2- the stickiness will go away.

To keep it from sticking you can put pencil lead on the tang where the lockbar connects .. but if it is still real early I would wait until it moves over a bit as the lock might slip off and the blade closes if the tang ramp is to steep

Thanks Colubrid! I was nervous about it but now I feel better about it. The only other Emerson I own is a A100 and the lockup was late out of the box. My Journeyman locks up on the first 50% of the lock liner and I was scared is wasn't going to hold under hard use. I skin tons of jacketed copper and aluminum wire in my line of work and I need to have faith in my lock not failing under hard use. I was impressed on how solid the blade is and how it was dead nuts centered out of the box. I also like the standoffs better than the g10 back spacer. I only wish the standoffs were a little bigger in size. Overall I love the Journeyman. Thanks again Colubrid!

I was thinking of buying one of the new rangemaster sheepdog Emerson knife - at the price point, I prefer to abort the mission, that is after reading the above comments. It's a real shame though, because his designs and grinds are awesome.

Why go through life based on other people's opinions but your own? There isn't anything on the planet made today that pleases everyone. We all have different ideas about things, that's what makes us all unique. Life would be pretty boring and depressing if we all had the same opinions. We've worked really hard getting the knives to where they are today. People still think we have a giant warehouse and employ a hundred or more people. Cut that number by 2/3. We're proud of our knives. Fit and finish discussions have been beat to death already. I'm sorry you base your decisions on others opinions. You're missing out. This will be an exciting year for us. We'd love for you all to come along for the ride.

Don't have much experience with Emerson's production knives but I have owned two of his customs, one from 1997 and one from 2004. Both had exceptional fit: butter smooth, locks weren't sticky, the lock could not be moved over, and the lockup was the same after hundreds of openings. In fact the lockup is still early on my nearly 20 year old CQC9.

Just received a brand new Commander SF that's my first regular prodo that has no year on the blade, and I gotta' tell you all, the 2015's just rock. This thing is perfect and just beautiful.

I'm excited about the spearpoint Sheepdog. I got on the email list to be notified when that one's available. As far as lockups go, I haven't seen any movement in any of mine. My most used Emerson is a 2012 mini-15. The lockup's never moved after the first week or so when it was settling in. Still locks up in the first half of the blade tang and there's no flex in the lockbar with any reasonable kind of pressure.
