Anyone have any experience with Newt Livesay? His website and photos are really crappy but his designs and pricepoint are solid.

I don't think he is making knives anymore. I used my RTAK today to clear shooting lanes and brush around where my treestand is. Great knife although I did have to reprofile the edge to my liking.

I've owned a couple, one whose name I can't remember (small ~8" fixed blade) and a small necker. Quality was pretty good with both, but the handle on the little guy was too small for my liking. But not bad blades.

As noted above, plan on re-profiling and sharpening the blades.

I like his sjamboks a lot. I believe he calls them "Whoop Ass 1" sticks.

Newt Livesay has been in and out of business more than once. He made himself a reputation of going out of business without filling orders -- or refunding money paid for them. At one point, his daughter and son-in-law were working off what he owed, but I lost track of them, they don't seem to be making knives anymore.

Deal with him at your own risk. He does make good knives and he can be very convincing about having gotten his act together.

This is not a Wilderness & Survival question and more people may need to see this information, so I'm moving the thread to FEEDBACK.

I have a few of his knives. All high quality pieces. Delivery times/estimates were a problem on a few of them though...

Newt got into trouble financially and his daughter and son-in-law tried to help out. It was not entirely successful b/c the hole Newt had dug was awfully deep.

Newt Livesay knives were chronically delivered sharp as a brick and well behind schedule, in some cases YEARS. That's just not acceptable, regardless of pricepoint. I scored an HKR from Jada (his daughter) and sold it without ever using it or bothering to make it sharp. I only have one Livesay in the house at the moment, an Exec Woo, and I'd love to sell it.

He's a nice guy, his daughter really tried to do the right thing, but sometimes you just cannot catch up from that far back.

I hope he's doing okay now. He was never a scam artist, but was a lousy business manager.

Payette, from those of us who HAVE dealt with him, you've been warned. If you want an Exec Woo, the little tanto necker with the micarta handles, contact me, I have one I'll sell you.

if i wanted a livesay i would buy it on the secondary market not from newt, he has a rep of taking folks $$ then not sending them the knife,

they are great knives i have had several and liked them all, the woo is still my favorite necker FWIW.

another con is if ya need some work done on the knife, i would worry about sending him something, worry if the work would get done or if he would send my stuff back,

as nice as his stuff is, i would consider another honest 'smith myself, maybe something from john greco, too many honest 'smiths could use the $$ to spend money on a livesay, imho anyway.
