I've been eyeing the 943 for a long time. Also like the rift but hate the grayish 2 tone scales wish I was able to get the solid black ones

The 2-tone scales lend themselves to many options:

Plus you can dye them black. And yes, the RIT dye is permanent.

I'm not so sure the rit dye is permanent. I've gotten some gas and alcohol on Rit dyed scales and it looks like it comes off (by accident). I cleaned it off fast but I did see dye on the cloth. Nothing appeared wrong with the scales color.

OK, update....I just soaked a scale with rubbing alcohol and wiped it down with a cloth to actually do a good test. Some color showed up on the rag (not much). After wiping again with more alcohol....nothing showed on the cloth. The scale looks fine.....no sign of a problem or the old color at all. After that test......I would dye a scale without hesitation. I was always questioning how the dye would hold up if chemicals got on it. To me the dye appears to be locked in real solid to the g10. I just thought this would be helpful info to anyone that was wondering.

I'm not going to try the gas.....it smells way too bad.

When you dye the scales, they need to simmer for 1.5 - 3 hrs, then they need to be rinsed in cold water, then scrubbed with soap & water and a brush until water runs clear. What you describe sounds like they weren't thoroughly rinsed when they were dyed.

IMO every BM fan should own a 940 and 710. They're 2 of what I consider the classics. I'll never get rid of mine.
