NIB GEC SFO GAW **WINNER** Posts #230 & #231

Looks like this has got off to a great start Robb, and no wonder, what a fantastic-looking knife! Thanks for your contributions here, and for coming up with a great idea for a very generous giveaway. Not an entry please, but I'm honoured to be representing the UK in a small way! :D Good luck everyone

Very generous GAW, RobbW!!:thumbup: Also, a very creative way to determine the winner. ;) I've seen a couple of Enigma machines in person, most recently in a military museum in Sevilla, Spain, and I like messing around with codes and the mathematics on which they're based. Am I correct in assuming that the order of the pair of letters chosen is important? By "without going over", do you mean that if the winning pair is, say, KC, then anyone whose second letter is D or beyond is ruled out, even if their first letter is K?

I read about a cache in Spain, I believe they were in use there for decades then hidden because their existence was also hidden. I don't think specific info about them or about Alan Turing was made public until sometime later in the 70s.

Order: Yes, order matters (as does law--lol). Treat the letters as though they were numbers, like this:

AA, AB, AC, AD...AZ; then BA, BB, BC, BD...BZ; and so forth until ZA, ZB, ZC, ZD...ZZ. So if the winning letters were BB, and the closest guesses were BA and BC, BA would win for being closest without going "over".

Thanks for doing this, Robb.

Not an entry. :)

OK you two delinquints--you're both in! Nobody escapes from the LGA love. lol. Seriously, the GAW is designed so that no one person can "game" the result, including me. The winning letters will be determined by settings that 4 people derive independently. Charlie (Santo Carlos), Andi, Ted, Jack and Sarah, I hope you all enter or I'll send Meako to hunt you down. Duncan, you'd better get in here, too (do you imagine that I forgot the "Mother of all Giveaways"?) :D

Frank and Gary, I hope you join, too. Three guesses for mods. :D

Sarah, you're BG if you don't guess your own letters. :D Only something like "I'm allergic to LGA" gets you out of this. You should see this stuff against a blue background. It picks up and enhances whatever it is set against.

as in stainless steel, not the unpleasant guys from WW2.

Very interesting giveaway, and a beautiful knife.
