We did some hiking in LBL today since it was a magnificent day for it.

Saw a bunch of these, so thought I'd borrow this idea from Mistwalker...... anybody?

And this is.........?

Most of these are old wagon roads before they dammed the rivers. They lead to some interesting places.

Found an old homesite and poked around a bit. Steps led to a spring fed cistern.

I always think about how it would have been to live in here before they decided to take it for public use.

Not a bad camp spot right here. Will have to paddle camp here this spring.

Now, here's the heartbreaking part. Every year my son and I camp at our all time favorite spot. I've posted a lot pics taken there and have many great memories. Walked down to check on it and came up to this.....

I was hoping it was temporary and involved some trees down or something like that. On the way out I stopped off to talk to a ranger about it. Apparently
some genius camped there when the lake was rising and had to be rescued. He then took legal action claiming the site was "too dangerous", caused him great distress and nearly his life. The result is a permanent closure of the camping area. Don't you love it? It just about makes me puke.

That's some bull, if you need to get rescued from somewhere chances are it's your own damn fault you need rescuing in the first place. People these days...otherwise nice pictures from a nice spot to hike around

Amazing isn't it? I'd hate to add to this gentelman's distress, but would sure like to meet him there for a satisfying and productive exchange of good solid reasoning.

People don't like reasoning it offends their sensibilities :D

Seems like the best things in life are taken away from us because some a-hole has to ruin it for everyone else.

Whoever that guy is, is a damn loser. Having to take legal action because you are stupid...same logic as filing a lawsuit for spilling hot coffee. There is a reason it is called the WILDerness. If you can't handle the possibilities, you don't even belong there.

A similar thing happened with my father an I. A flood wiped out a camp area near a river. They closed it just because it was too costly to rebuild. It was a small unpopular area (which are my favorite types of places). Now, people go there to pan for gold and leave garbage everywhere. This was no more than 10 years ago and in SoCal...

Reminds me of burglars who sue homeowners for shooting them. I hope this guy doesn't wander into a post office, a few paper cuts later we will all be out of a mail delivery system.

This is the world lawyers have created for us. Everything is about liability, nothing is about personal responsibility or common sense. And all in the name of money, though they claim it's about anything but the money. And it seems that many lawmakers, otherwise known as politicians, are or have been lawyers. Hmmmmm......Could there be a connection? Nah! I'm just being paranoid......Politicians wouldn't pass laws that make it lucrative or otherwise enhance the profession of law, would they???

Okay, I'm getting off my soapbox now. I feel better.

Damn, it sucks that happened. You would think judges would pronounce people stupid or incompetent rather than woods unsafe...woods are woods. But things have clearly taken a turn for the surreal over the last few decades.

By the way, not sure on the blue ones...but that yellow "berry" is fruit of the horse nettle. One of the many varieties of nightshade family of plants. I advise not eating them.

I was about to say. We need to dig into some public records so we can go see this guy and pay tribute to his legal gumption.

Bad news for sure Trade. It's pretty disheartening how some people's stupid decisions end up effecting the rest of us.

You said it brother!

Sorry for the loss, Trade.

According to a contact I spoke with this morning, the "rescue" and threat of legal action brought some close scrutiny to that area by the forest service. Administrators found an issue with the legality of this road and they didn't have the funds in their budget to address it. The "best" fix was to simply close it. Right now it's in the bureaucratic twilight zone and I was told "Don't look for it to ever re-open". I was hoping you could get in touch with your buddy at Cheatham Dam and get this taken care of.

Complete bull shit. I hate people like this, that effing ruin it for everybody. My older brother, R.I.P., had a plat map of the area, and had some fifty ponds marked, that he had permission to fish in. Anyways, the owners of one of his favorites, where he caught a 6 1/2 lb largemouth in, stopped people from fishing there. When he inquired about it, the owners told him they gave permission for a couple of guys to fish there, who later got drunk on their ass, lit some of those big round hay bales on fire, and rolled others into the pond. Bastards. My brother was the type of person who would walk around a pond, picking up the garbage others left. People like that piss me off.

Nice opening pics with your Becker knife I am assuming it is a BK2 campanion? I have had two BK 7s

Just another example of the prevailing winds of stupidity governing this country today. Blame, remove, and ban inanimate objects for the actions or inactions of assholes. Accountability of self, gentlemen, is severely lacking in modern America these days.
