Nicholoson File Knife Idea

I would have to have some of the handle overlapping the tang then. Since the where the handle begins, the file starts to taper from 1 1/2" to 1".

It would help with my visualization if you laid the file next to your design. Alterately, you could leave more of the handle at the back of the handle. Allow the handle to swell out at the back.

Hmm, I'm having a thought about a traditional knife handle. Like the one of the Svord Tom Tempsky Bowie. I would use a brownish g-10 or micarta to add to texture, and I may add a gaurd to it depending on how the style is goign to go.

So I got my new handle design sketched out. It's a good thing that I cut out the handle from the blade.

Alright instead of dealing with that annoying taper fro 1 1/2" to 1" I just switched it around to the side of the file with that pin.

This is to scale

any progress? and to other dudes with more knowledge, after annealing the file to cut the grind and shape, do you have to HT and temper again? I'm a bit confused as I read on the Anza site that they anneal the files but doesn't mention any other process

You could temper the file back to a lower hardness (say @ 56 - 58 HRc) and then shape it. You would need to be a lot more careful to keep from overheating the blade while grinding. You could cut holes in the tang with masonary bits. It would be more work but you wouldn't need any additional heat treatment.

If you decide to try this start out with a smaller file to make a smaller knife. From what I've read you will be spending a substantial amount of time grinding the harder steel.
