Nicks & Cuts?? (Slipjoints)

Just today was stripping a boat trailer ground wire and was going to solder an extension on it , laid the wire on the inside my thumb with the blade over it put on the pressure and promptly cut through the wire and into my thumb (not to brite for someone that makes slippies) before that a 3 1/8 swayback bit me pretty good about a month ago coming off half stop.

Knock on wood, it wasn't me. But my 12 year old......

I've been teaching my 3 boys about knife safety and the correct way to hold a knife and such. You know the drill....always cut away from your body, make sure that the knife is the furthest thing from you when you are cutting(whittling), that sort of thing.

Yesterday, I get all 3 boys set up to do some whittling. Pull their knives out of my drawer and hand them out to them. They got their whittling sticks and we are looking forward to a long enjoyable night of whittling away on the back deck while their mother is at a church meeting.

My 12 year old decides that he wants to carve into the middle of his stick. Rather than choking down on the stick or even turning it around, he decides to put his hand at the far end of the stick.

Did I also mention that he's not one for taking small slices of wood off? He goes for the deep cut, regardless of the talks we've had about "You can't put wood back on after you cut it off." Nope, not him.

He digs in and cuts.....you guessed it. Right into his left hand. Took off a piece of the pad of his left ring finger and sliced his left pinkie from the tip down the outside to the knuckle.

Blood, blood, and more blood.

Took a long time to get it under control. We examined the cut and decided to butterfly it as opposed to stitches. It was a very clean cut with a very sharp knife. The skin didn't fillet open and leave a big gap. Once the bleeding stopped, I could see that some butterflies would work to hold the skin together. So, 4 butterflies, some band aids and a splint to minimize movement later, my son learned a very valuable lesson about knives and knife safety.

By the way, the knife in question was a Buck Trio with the main blade. Man, did that thing come scary sharp out of the box!

About 2 weeks ago, at work. Stupid shit too. I was using an old stockman to pry a little tiny plastic cap out of a cover to access a screw. These little covers only ever exist on brand new, freshly installed machines so you forget what a complete bear they are to get out. So long story short, knife popped out of the cap with the cap only half way out, my other hand was in the wrong place(well duh). Hit my left thumb, right on the tip. I felt it bounce off the tip of the bone. Funny part is, I step away from the machine and one of the operators see's me mouthing a curse to myself, and see's the blood start dripping then watches me pretty much ignore my thumb till I've cleaned off the blade and stowed the knife.
Just walks over, looks at me and say's, and yeah I quote "Jon, dude, your just f**ked ya know that?" Then I asked if they had any superglue and he just bugged his eyes, shook his head and gave up, poor guy.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. Oh well, live and learn.....then live and learn again.
It's been about 2 weeks, like I said, the cut is closed up nicely and well on it's way to being gone, and the superglue has pealed off, I'm all good again.

About a year ago with my new Xikar 188, I loosened the blade screw so I could flip it open with one hand, In doing so when I flipped it open the liner lock went so far I could not close it easily so I put forth extra force and in doing so when the liner lock gave the blade shot closed on the top of my right thumb. So much for playing with knives. However in the last three months at work I shot my self with a finish nail gun in the hand twice, jabbed a moving jig saw blade into the cuticle and through the nail on my left thumb and smashed my left index finger with a 24oz framing hammer. And I have 27yrs experience as a carpenter, oh yea, about five years ago I was trying to seperate two short peices of 2x4 that were nailed together, I stood them on end and was going to sink the claw end of my hammer in the middle to pry them apart and instead sunk the claw of the hammer in the meaty part of my palm just below the thumb, that was a bad day!

Some time last summer. I had just reprofiled an edge on a new knife and was outside using some acetone to remove sharpie marks from it. Something in the yard distracted me and I looked up from where I was wiping the blade. Darn if it didn't cut through the rag and into my thumb. Acetone is like alcohol. Get it in a cut and you know it big time.

I'm sure more than one of us share similar stories. Hey, nobody wants blood staining the blade, let alone rusting up a good carbon steel blade. Pitting is a pain. My workplace is so lackluster that they don't even have sponges to clean the bathroom, so I wasn't surprised when their first aid kit was nothing more than bandages and a couple isopropyl alcohol pads. I tossed in a couple super glue tubes into the mix and have already had to use it a couple of times.

yeah see I work at customer sites all the time, so I can never count on anything first-aid wise. Some customers have a huge, well stocked first aid kit, some have an almost empty, off brand band aids box that's been dropped in the toilet half a dozen times. I always carry my own stuff including band aids, superglue, Neosporin etc. There's lots of places to get caught in the machines even if you DON'T do anything stupid.

99f250, wow man, ever thought of a safety course or something? Maybe chain mail gloves? :D

Fiddling with a new yellow Stockman ( only bought last wekk) whilst talking to the missus on the phoneat lunchtime.
OOWW, managed to close the sheepsfoot blade on my left ring finger.
Couldn't put the phone down or tell the wife 'cos she hates knives and would go mad.
Luckily only tip caught me so cut is small and clean
Still smarts like heck though
Take Care

I had to cut myself on purpose. A few months ago I was out fishing by myself. I had a very sharp hook being held in one of the eyelets of the rod and it was way to tight, as a matter of fact the tip of the rod was bent so I knew it was wrong. (duh). I took the hook out of the eyelet with one hand and it slipped and shot forward into my other hand. To be exact, into the finger tip of my middle finger on my left hand. Well it went to the bone. I had to get that thing out of my finger so I got the sharpest knife out of the box and very slowly and carefully cut down into my finger so I could get the hook out. It took me about an hour to slowly cut down into my finger. As soon as I could I then had to clean that mess out and butterfly it up. Yes I know it needed stitches and I was dumb as a board but I was out of work, didn't have any dough, had been hit by 3 hurricanes in a couple of years -- well the resources just were not there for an extra doctors appointment. A few months after that I did go to the doctor for a 1 yr check up and showed him the finger and the story, and really caught hell from him. He said i could have cut a tendon and really done some damage to my finger. So if ya cut yourself really bad it is probably best not to play surgeon like I did and go to the doctor. Oh yea and don't keep so much tension on your fishing line. Jeez that hurt.

Man that is some story xbxb! For the past five or so years I have been crimping the barb on all my fly hooks. I can't say that I have noticed any loss of fish due to this. Since I do mostly catch and release in fresh water (not saltwater), it helps hook removal easier on the fish plus more importantly if I get a hook stuck in me, I can pull it out easily as well. I do feel your pain though.

Wait wait wait, I'm a little lost here. Couldn't the hook have simply been cut with a pair of wire cutters on some pliers and then removed by backing the hook out?

YES I like that idea and will give it a try since I toss most of them back also.

Hey guys I could not move it back due to the barb on the hook, and I could not move it forward due to the bone in my finger. It was a good size treble hook on a lure. After I cut the fishing line I studied the issue for a few minutes because believe me, I wanted to do it the easiest way I could and the only way to go about it was to cut it out with my knife. I went real slow slicing away small pieces at a time so I could keep the cut as even as possible and also because It REALLY HURT!!! I had to sit down a couple of times what with the pain, blood and all. I don't even want to think about it anymore it gets me creepy all over again. DANG!!!

Oh by the way I still have the lure (didn't want to lose a good lure) and not to long ago I told the story to a buddy of mine and he wanted to know what knife I used, of all things, 61OT Schrade with a long pointy tip and really really sharp. --------oh by the way not my picture

Well not after I got blood on it --just kidding --no just keep some oil on the blade and in the joints. Thanks

I was putting in fence posts last Saturday and just clipped my little finger closing my knife. I either need some adult supervision or maybe I should take some classes.
Personal note: I no longer run with my knife --because I can no longer run. Otherwise I probably would.

I cut open my palm while halving an apple. Using your hand a cutting board is usually a bad idea. I think I was using a SAK or an Opinel.

I'd hate to do that with my Opinel:yawn:! Half of my hand would be laying on the ground:eek:!

I've taken to keeping the kitchen knives so sharp you no longer dare to pare vegetables "against the thumb". I did it recently. Ouch. Bad idea to try to cut off a chicken leg with your hand in the way, too...

I nick and cut myself all the time messing around with my knives. But the last time I remember when I got a cut that bled to any amount, I was taking pictures of my knives. I always cut myself opening all the blades to take a photo of them. Especially stockman's. This is the only picture I have of this one.

Right after I took this one I started to open up the blades, I had two of them open and I opened the third and just barely touched the edge of one of the other blades. Well it is a very sharp knife. And it bled like crazy. I stopped taking pictures to clean up. And I did not touch the knife cause I did not want to stain it. I have not photographed it since. I have finaly figured out the way to open them and not cut myself, so I should take pictures of it since it is a ver nice looking knife.

I know I did cut myself more recently than this one. But I do not remember how I did it.
