Nirvana

My lock was sticky but it wasn't the worst I've had. I set the lockbar and opened and closed it a bunch, my thumb is sore.. The lockbar is on the stiff side. Now that it's close to perfect it's time to enjoy this baby.

Has anyone with a Nirvana that has a lock-stick problem contacted Spyderco and got their take on the problem ?

Has anyone here formally contacted Spyderco? Does anyone disagree that they should know about these stiff and sticky lockbars?

With essentially everyone reporting the lock stick issue I feel like Sal should know. This is possibly their most anticipated models in years and we have to break it in and put Sharpie or graphite on the lock surface? I'm happy with mine but after paying well over $400, it certainly takes a bit of the sweetness away from what is otherwise a phenomenal knife. My Techno never had a lock issue or a break in period and I paid less than half the price of the Nirvana for that.

This is exactly the same as I think.

I really don't get all the commotion. So the knife needs a little breaking in, so what. My Chokwe and Southard both had a lot of lock stick at some point. It'll pass. And then it's perfect. My Nirvana should be here next Tuesday, can't wait ☺

Cost as nothing to do with whether a knife exhibits lock stick or not. Of course we all hope a new offer comes perfect OTB. As knife people most of knew there was a chance to have a sticky lock, especially with this design and materials. For me, the issue takes nothing away from this killer knife. I couldn't spend the money to get a full custom so I'm very happy to get this collaboration. Break it in and enjoy, you'll forget about the hassle soon enough.

At least we won't hear any complaints from spinewhackers with this model...there's no way that sucker is going to get whacked out of alignment.

Dude a knife has to break in.

I prefer an imperfect knife that breaks into perfection than a perfect knife that breaks into some slop.

100 openings and the stick goes away? That sounds like nothing.

You need to use your knives more m8

Mine has broken in beautifully after 3 days of casual opening. It was not really sticky initially, but I used graphite in anticipation of issues. My only notable complaint was a pretty dull edge (though I think it was just a burr) that was remedied with a little effort on the medium Spyderco stones. I am curious how some of the very fine and thin edges of the ti handles will feel in the hand during use - could benefit from gloves.

Mine was crazy sticky. Like it took a lot of force to get unstuck. I added some graphite, and it went away. So I decided to clean off the graphite to see if it would stick again, and it hasn't since. I'm going to have to make a follow up video showing that the lock stick goes away.

The Slysz Bowie was reported sticky initially too. Mine was and isn't anymore. Maybe they are doing a modified process that leaves some initial thin layer that needs to be worn away but is better in the long run.

I did some bark stripping off some old oak today just to take it for a test drive. Very comfortable in use. I'm really diggin this blade now that the lock is fully settled in. I did two really light passes over my Norton India and it's popping hairs, so my initial thought of a dull blade was probably just a small burr. The Nirvana is worth the squeeze!

I have been trying to break mine in for over 4 days now and the stick is still just as extreme as it was before. I wiped all for eh excess oil off and haven't seen a speck of it on the lockbar, and I added graphite which did nothing to resolve the issue, so I am now returning the knife.

My fingers started to actually bleed and split two days ago when I made the decision to return it. I know that some knives do take a while to break in, but this is ridiculous to an extreme degree. It seems like mine is the exception and not the rule, but still this is absurd.
For the money I paid for this, I can buy a brand new CRK, Hinderer, Strider, CKF, Or any of several other brands that will have no lock issues at all out of the package and never will for the rest of the reasonable life of the knife.

And I understand that making an integral is not easy, but there have been at least 4 production/mid-tech integral knives that have been released since Spyderco announced the Nirvana, and not one of them have had issues like this at all, with all of them being in approximately the same price range (though I do believe several were slightly more expensive). Given that, I really can't believe that this can be written off as "just needing to break in" or "a minor issue". There were things that could've been done about this to keep it from ever being an issue at all, but they were not, and no reason has been given as to why.

So you use a knife so much that your fingers bleed, but then you are going to return it? It's a used knife, you should not return the knife, it's yours now. Send it to Spyderco, if it really has a problem they will fix it.

Never used the knife at all. I only opened and closed it and that was it. That was how insanely sticky the lock was for me.

And frankly there is no reason I should have to send knife back to the manufacturer right after I get it regardless of how much it costs, but especially not for $400+...

Did you try to set the lockbar?

I will admit that I have not done that, considering that as soon as I found out about the lock issue I wasn't sure 100% that I was going to keep it, but the lockbar also isn't particularly tight in my opinion. I feels more like the finishing on the lock face was very rough, or maybe it wasn't cut exactly right, because there is almost a grinding feeling that goes along with the stick when I unlock the knife.

I will honestly admit that if I can figure out how to get the lock to not stick anymore that I will gladly keep the knife, but I don't know what can really be done to try and remedy it at this point.

Mine had the same feeling when i first got it. Find a soft piece of wood and give it a couple of hits on the spine while the knife in in the open/locked position, this will help mate the lockbar to the face of the tang. Work the lock between hits and you should feel the improvement. You don't have to slam the spine into the wood just some light to moderate hits and make sure you keep your fingers clear as a precaution. It worked for me and mine is perfect.

The amount of Lock stick is the only sticking point(pun intended), to an otherwise superb knife. I tried cleaning, graphite, sharpie, opening and closing, etc. It's a little better, but still problematic. I tried removing the pivot to remove the blade for thorough cleaning. One pivot loosened easily. The other would not. Instead of being smart, and stopping, I kept trying, which partially stripped the pivot head. I called Spyderco, and the Rep is sending me a replacement. Now I have to figure out how to remove the damaged pivot. Any constructive thoughts would be appreciated.

Other then the lock stick, the knife performs as if it were a custom. Here's a post processed image of my baby.

such a great looking knife!

In regards to the bolded quote - many would say that lock stick actually comes with the territory of custom knives ;-)

I have a feeling the lock stick is just a break in issue and it will take more than 3-4 days of casual flipping to mate the surfaces...I've never had lock stick not go away eventually.
