NJ Steel Baron - Still around?

I can attest to the fact that they have been streamlining things. I recently placed a small order, and it was the smoothest transaction I have had from them to date. Very clear and accurate on the phone, order went out, and arrived quite timely. Thank you for your services, Mr. Bruno.

Sam

Aldo almost always has my order within days.. I am on the East Coast . I am sure that has something to do with it.

(please read the following with your sarcasm/humor filter set to "stun")

Aldo is a terrible person, and no fun at all to deal with or talk to. He sells garbage steel, mostly made of old bedsprings and rusted-out horseshoes. He has zero knowledge of what's really going on in the knife/steel biz, and he does not support knifemakers in any way, shape or form. Everyone should stop buying from him immediately!!

That way he will be forced to sell me all his stock and services at even more-steeply-discounted prices... ;) :D

Careful there James or else in russian accent "No More Steel For You!"

I just hope there some 1084 left once all the big dogs have got what they need.

Aldo, I'm curious as to the composition of the new 1084 and W2, and 1095 for that matter. I assume the batch is made to your specs, but I have no idea if that's right or not. If so, the compositions are listed on your website. If the new steel is different, could you give us the specs? Thank you, sir!

aldo why is W2 is such high demand? If i read things right W2 is not very different from W1

so is it just a problem of small quantities?

The difference between the W-1 and W-2 is the added Vanadium. W-1 has a very wide alloy range. They were typically ordered for specific tasks. Carbon can range from .70 to 1.35 and Manganese had a range of 0.0 to .60. The w-1's available today for the most part are similar to 1095. As for quantities, before we had it made the only W-2 stock available were large plate and rounds left over and sitting in warehouses for the last 40 years. It has not been in production at all accept for a small custom smelt I heard about that was rolled about 17 years ago by a mill in Europe. It took us 6 years of trying to find someone who would make it. We typically have "1" smelt done at a time yielding 3- 5,000 pound billets. Those 3 billets are rolled into 3 different thicknesses. In this case 1/4, 3/16 and 1/8. We are hoping, in the future, to do 2 smelts that will give us 6 sizes from 3/32 to 3/8. All it takes is a shitload of money and a little(lot) of patience.

Just got off the phone with Aldo, and have the comps for the new W2 and 1084. W2 is as follows C: .934 Si: .211 Mn: .233 Cr: .077 V: .166. 1084 is as follows C: .82 Si: .22 Mn: .73 Cr: .12 V: .01. There is just a touch of vanadium in the 1084 for grain refinement. Technically a 1084FG. Thanks Aldo! Put down the magnifying glass and enjoy your lunch!

Aldo, did you have them do any round bar?

Edit: NM, I see you have 1080 in square, which will work great.

This guy Aldo never ceases to amaze me. I got the email like everyone else to put in a pre-order, so I pre-ordered some W2. A few days later (today) the W2 shows up at my door, without having even been paid for yet! Aldo, I will be calling first thing in the morning to make payment. I just wish somehow I could do for you what you do for all of your customers. One of the best people I have ever done business with. Thank you.

Aldo,

I have been looking for some more CPM S35VN for months. When do you expect to get some?

Greg,

Call me at 973-949-4140. We have some in stock. Just not putting it up until we finish up some web site work.

I put in a pre order weeks when it got the port liz. It is a smaller order compared to some of the others, but I was told that they wouldn't even ship mine until the end of this week. They are super busy, for sure.
