No blade at Disney World

Wonder what's up with not being able to go without a knife for a few hours...
I was at Disney a few months ago and I knew that you could carry a small knife, so I did. What did I use it for? To cut a few smoked turkey legs for 4 kids. Those plastic knives they give you are garbage.

But I didn't bother to carry at Universal since they're not allowed.

I am actually surprised at how many times I have hear "child's shoelace caught in escallator" as a reason people started carrying a knife. It is such a good reason because it forces people who try to say "you only carry a knife because it is a weapon, no one needs a knife" to shut up and reconsider.

Time is pressing as the child's foot will be crushed by the tightening shoe laces. You can't pull the child's foot out because the tightening of the laces makes that all but impossible. The only viable solution is to cut the shoelace, and NOW!

The story is so good I have been trying to figure out a way to work it into my story when a nosy Canadian police officer tries to give me a hard time for the knife I am legally carrying. (Don't worry no need for a written report, that way he can keep my knife) I was thinking, "as a child a got my shoelace stuck in the escalator and my father cut the lace" he told me to always carry a knife.

And again, this is why I prefer fixed blades. Faster cutting in an emergency.

Kids' shoelaces somehow manage to become untied 5 seconds after you retie them. It's like some kind of shoelace gremlin follows them around.

I once came across a mother and 5 y.o. in a mall in Austin TX. The kid was bawling his eyes out. He had his shoelace get hung in the escalator not 20 seconds before I came by. He was lucky in that his shoe had gotten so loose on his foot that when he stepped off the escalator with the lace hung in the treads, he tripped and fell out of his shoe. Had the laces been tighter, the lace COULD have cinched down tight enough to cause a crush injury to his foot.

I hit the Emergency Stop button as the escalator was still trying to suck the shoe into its guts. Mall security showed up in about 3 nanoseconds. (Where are they when you REALLY need them.:D) Luckily the child's foot was not injured except for some bruising.

The rent-a-cop said that they have 4 or 5 instances per week of shoelaces getting hung. Most of the instances were teenagers who habitually walked around with the laces of their shoes untied. They would lean against the "rail" and a loose lace would get dragged into the crack between the moving tread at the edge and the guard along the side of the step. He pointed at a sign the mall had install at the escalators that warned of riding the escalators with untied shoelaces.

Meanwhile, back on topic :D... On the rare occasions when I go to a facility that does not allow me to carry my knives and I need to have something cut (packaging, plastic tag "string", etc) I simply ask the nearest security guard to cut it for me.

The last time I took my niece and nephew to 6 Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, it was literally the first weekend after they had changed their policies about allowing knives in. Had to spend 20 minutes walking back out to the truck and back putting my knives up.

Well, sure enough, my niece wanted some toy that had half a dozen tags hanging on it and wanted the tags off. Spotted one of the security folks and asked him to cut the tags off for my niece.

The guard looked at like I was an idiot and he said "You don't carry a knife?" (Remember, this is in Texas. :D)

I said "Yep, everywhere I go. Except in 6 Flags where you can't have a knife."

The policy was so new that even the roving guards were aware of the new policy.

He just shook his head in disbelief, cut the tags and said, "Have a nice day. I gotta get a different job."

As long as it's allowed then it's no problem. Anyway I guess the 4 kids would have starved if you didn't have a knife on you. ;)

Correct. DisneyLAND, California-no knives.
DisneyWORLD, Florida-under 3" blade is allowed

Are you sure about this? I can’t see the Disney Corp allowing knives in one park and not the other. Or are you quoting FL law in regards to carry length?

For the guys who are going to Disney, why not just call them and ask if you can carry a knife? Seems easy enough.

People, I spent a week there in February, I survived without a knife. You can too. Plastic wrap aint kevlar, you'll be OK.

Are there metal detectors there now? It has been a long time since I have been there with my wife (15 years?). Don't recall.

That was a time before my pockets were loaded like they are now...

I'm in with the "I'd rather not have a hassle to deal with" crowd. I was there last year (Orlando) and left my Leatherman in the hotel safe, dispelling any chance of a scowling wife and flustered six year old daughter as I bicker with an overzealous security guard. The lines are long enough as-is.

Just clip it underneath your belt buckle.

They have metal detectors but it's all nebulous. Seemed to me the metal detectors lines were voluntary, I went through one of the non-detector lines one day and nobody seemed to notice.

I would never willingly go to Disney world for a variety of reasons.

Paying someone who demonizes tools seems silly.

I might go if they paid me.

If your kids wanted to go, you'd take them. We took our son a few times at different ages and seeing him have such a great time with all of the characters, shows, etc. was well worth it. And no, I didn't flip out or go crazy because I spent a week without a knife in my pocket, LOL.

If your kids wanted to go, you'd take them.

I just had a vasectomy, so I can't be manipulated. LOL. ;)

I've never been a fan of Disney. They have Star Wars and Marvel now, but that's about it.

Also, it's simply too risky to visit. Too many people, too many variables.

It would also require me to leave the house for more than 24 hours.

Add in their anti-tool policy and it's a complete no go for me.

I like knives, I want a small one on me for EDC, but I do not want to lose one to or just deal with a potential hassle, so I can go without one for a week in the parks......as long as it stays in the car and I can caress it at the end of the day....my precious, my precious. :D

You might need a knife to fight off those gators at Disney. A Vic SAK classic probably won't do. Sounds to me like I simply would carry a small SAK and if I ran into problems, I'd make the hike back to my vehicle or hotel.
