Just got my first Salsa - all I can say is WOW - what a beauty! I almost wish they weren't so collectible cause I would have a ton of these knives (and use them often!)...nice chubby size, well made - just an all around beautiful knife! The quest continues to find more, PE preferred of course :-)

That is one cool little knife! Nice cobra hood, neat wire clip setup, and that compression lock looks nice and functional.

Hopefully Spyderco will be releasing something similar soon.

I think its for ambidextrous opening and as a thumb rest. I'm sure someone else can chime in on this one. Wavester nice score. I have been wanting a plain edge salsa for awhile. They are sure hard to come by. I saw one go on ebay like yours last week for over 100. I think it had a collector number on it. Sett little knife.

It was a pity the Salsa was discontinued---the blade geometry geometry was awesome, as was the wire clip and the Compression Lock setup. It was truly a sleeper in the line of small knives by Spyderco. With the metal handles, Compression Lock, and Cobra Hood, it seemed sort of like a baby ATR to me.

Nice picts of a nice knife.

Never understood why the SALSA wasn't more popular.

I agree...I would love to have 10 of these with all sorts of variations.

Sometimes I think Spyderco discontinues knives too early - unless that is there intention...

Wavester nice score.

Thanks - my only slight beef with it, using Youtube reviews for a comparison, is that when closing it, when the blade is swinging around to close - it seems to hit the compression lock piece as it is slightly protruded - causing you to have to slightly "click" it closed. At first I thought this was normal - but youtube reviews on this knife do not show this.

So, just a question, what is the purpose of the "hood"?

The purpose of the Cobra Hood is to ensue opening even in thick gloves. Sometimes you can't get enough of your thumbpad into the hole, and the hood helps out with that.

Curious - what other knives, besides the Salsa and my newly aquired Assist, have the "Cobra Hood"..? I love this feature and wish Spyderco would implement it on more knives.

Isnt the "click" just the dedent? The ATR also has the cobra hood.

ATR has one. (Mentioned). Um.. Assist, Salsa, not sure too many others have one. I think it was developed as more of a rescue knife thing.

I remember clearly when the SALSA was released and I believe, for the time, it was just a little too "new fangled" for the knife community at large. Now that everyone is a little more accustomed to Spyderco's innovation and fearlessness at releasing knives like the Dodo and Polliwog just to name two that come to mind, I think the SALSA would have made a better go of it in 2009.

All I can say to Spyderco is keep on innovating and making things interesting for us all. :)

If they did a sprint run on it and put another type of handle material on it I bet it would fly off the shelves. I like it as it is but it sure would be sweet in linen micarta. Just my 2 cents.

I had a forum member modify an extra Salsa I had laying around with some black G-10:

As far as I know, Spyderco never made a G-10 Salsa, but I have one in my pocket!
