Classy guy, that Mantis Knives owner Jared West.

The thread title is the note he posted on my paypal refund of $50.

I bought a T5-c folder on ebay from him. Knife described as BG-42 blade with T6061 aluminum handles. see link here...

http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29392...&lk=ItemDescriptionANDimage&Item=260210640762

I noticed that the knife was also advertised as having a 420J handle on the Mantis website here....

http://mantisknives.com/t5.html

or a 420HC handle
http://www.knifesite.com/pd-mantis-t5-black-420hc-handle-black-bg42-blade.cfm

and, that a BG-42 folding knife could even be sold for $29.97!
http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=MANTIS-KNIVES&ID=1296233&ref=GB

or is the blade really 420HC?

I wrote to him questioning all of the above. (I'm sure SOG and Spyderco would love to produce a BG-42 folder in this price range.) Not to mention all three handle material discrepancies.

This lack of clarity made me decide to cancel my order and ask for a refund.

He gave me one... quickly. He said he was 'insulted' that I would open a dispute with him, that I was the 'only one.'

I work very hard for my money. I don't mind spending $$$ on something I can rest assured is the quality as represented. Curiously, aside from his insulting note at the end, I never got any kind of answer to my questions on the true product material, ... or inaccuracies,... or lies.... take your pic.

YMMV.

I can't imagine Sal Glesser or Ken Onion hurling personal insults because... M'Gawd!... you canceled a knife order! How professional....

Mr. Jared West, if you want to play with the big boys, I suggest you grow up and become a big boy first. Then, you might want to standardize your product information so 'losers' like me don't actually read the details and find, ahem... discrepancies. Then again, it's my money, not yours, so why should you care?

Guess I'll stick to my Spydies, Kershaws, Benchmades, Microtechs, and good affordable customs like John Greco, Mickey Yurco, Gary Bradburn, Coombs, etc. When it sounds too good to be true...

Good move. If he'd left off that message, he'd be looking good right now: cheap knives, but responsive to the customer. Intead, he messed up his reputation for a moment's anger.

I got in trouble for this earlier but I suspected that that guy spaming mantis knives awhile back was actually from mantis.
Just a hunch.

$27 dollar knife..??? not worth it..for $27 go with a knife you can trust...Spyderco..they have plenty in that price range to choose from and you know you have the company and Sal standing behind every one..

You're right, I"ve been very happy with my Byrds and Spydercos.

I guess sometimes you just see something different, it reads well, and you want to believe......

My bad.

Anyway, I'm done buying anything for awhile, need a knife moratorium for a little bit. Actually need to sell a few.

Seems that rather than reply to this complaint Jared West recruited a bunch of people to shill for him, and overdid it -- we're flooded with Mantis Knives shilling tonight. Might as well bring this thread back to the top with all the others....

I wondered why all the "I love Mantis knives" threads started to pop up.

Instead of an explanation or [*gasp] an apology, the guy has some members shill for him.

Oh well, saying "I'm sorry" is very difficult for some........................

ooops, I am sorry this does not rhyme!

I wondered why the threads began
with I Love Mantis Knives.
Jared West's Militia
were all giving him high fives!

Instead of an apology,
they shill for all his trash,
not knowing this will warn us off
from parting with our cash!

The Wolfmann either drives it home
with a 2 x 4 or rhyme,
but we'll accept his honest word
without a rhyme this time!

Would would any one expect. Look at his antics. Why spend your money on that when there are so many companies that act with honor?

What amazes me is that he would do something that stupid. Maybe the guy is not too bright but, to get where he is, he must possess a certain degree of rat cunning. Did it not occur to him that sending out shills to spam major knife forums might cause a negative reaction?

Did he think that all knife collectors/buyers are like the knowledge free types that will buy anything from ebay?

I can only assume that, lacking any sort of honour or common decency himself, he simply assumed that everyone else is the same and the owners, operators and users of knife forums wouldn't object to such behaviour.

All part of the rich tapestry of life I guess.

Dave's use of the term "loser" to describe Jared West is very fitting.

I agree, but it was Dave who got called a "loser" after he questioned the materials Mantis used and withdrew on a purchase of one of their knives. Dave, the customer, got called a "loser!" How's that for PR?:thumbdn:

I never heard of Mantis before today. I checked out the website. If you want to purchase a knife it will take you to Ebay. Now, Ebay has just passed a policy whereas the buyer doesn't have to put up with sellers' leaving poor feedback on a buyer whose only crime was getting something short of what was advertised. This policy was also retroactive so all negative feedback on buyers that were left by sellers after the buyer left negative feedback on the seller was removed. If this guy at Mantis was doing his homework he would realize that now is not the time to be abusing customers on Ebay sales. Especially, a merchant that insists on selling strictly through Ebay.

Culpeper,

You are so right.
I just got back from two days at eBay Live! and they are instituting lots of changes. Sellers grumble (I am a sometimes seller too, more often a buyer, though ) but this is kind of the shennanigans, in part, they are aiming at.

Like Esav, "BladeForums Scribe":D wrote earlier on, if he had just refunded the money, he would come off as a great guy. Instead, he got petty, and ya know, with limited dollars to spend I just don't need to give it to some cocky upstart who can't seem to get his product materials straight.

C'est la vie... and buyer beware.....

I read that and actually new that it was him that had called you a loser, but I guess it had slipped my mind. Anyhow, the description definitely fits him to a tee.
