any suggestions for everyday "pick-up" weapons ?

e.g.: rolled-up periodical or catalog; pop bottle; deck of cards . . .

4-5 foot staff: 2x4, tire, chair, etc.

Soda bottles are always a favorite of mine, especially if full. Keys. People forget to train with their keys. We train with the swords, sticks, traditional weapons-things that the warriors always had on their body. What do we have on our bodies today? Our keys. Also, I like a short rattan stick in the car-police ask, I study hilot and give a little eccentric description of ways pressure points can be manipulated, soothed, etc. with the stick and rattan is the traditional tool of the hilot art.

thanks; i would think that "pick-up" weapons training would be a major feature of the modern fma

I hate to "date' myself, but considering the current mans fashion trend towards heavy leather belts with large buckles it's almost like the late 50's and early 60's. Just make sure however that you are NOT into the current trend of loose, baggy pants.

Seriously though, for all that it's been almost 30 years I still remember getting whacked upside the head with a garrison belt. Anybody else on the list old enough to remember those?

Another thing that is extremely useful is if you ever get into a knife altercation and you ain't got a knife. first, shame, shame if you don't, but ...

Try knife sparring, your opponent with a knife(training one of course) and you with a shoe. If you ever see someone walking to you with a knife, and you don't get a chance to run or pick up something longer and sharper, you can use your shoe as a last resort. This is a "weapon" that you always have(???) and is better than going at it without a weapon.

No stick in sight? Try a Himalayan Import Khukuri.

Oh, you didn't like the shoe idea? Well, I had some guy last Sunday tell me that he could kick a knife from my hand. So with a edge2 blade, he learned that he couldn't. He then laughed at my shoe idea...until I hit his hand about 4 times really hard.

thanks for the reply;

a friend of the family once got hit w/ the flying-fork-of-fate; it stuck in his pec, rather than his forehead.

When talking to women, I often speak of their surrounding awareness. The use of using phones, stand up fans, shelves, pans, cups, brooms, etc. especially when in the house. I usually try to show an eye distrantion and groin shot or vice versa and then hit with something while you get out of the house. I've spoke to a stripper before, and explained how those spiked heels could do damage along with her keys and nails. Yes the FMA offers many options when no stick is in sight, but I think it is more so the realization and practice of your strategy then the techniqes that will be working here. There are two types of confrontations, one is the face-off, which obviously utilizes technique more, and the self-defense which your mind needs to be aware and have strategies planned out. Sorry, I've been sleeping.

BTW, it's not just for women, these are things that I would be doing in my house, except I might just stay around after I hit him with the pan, so that I can go get my khukuri.

i still say throw a cat in their face!!
anybody remember the Eddie Murphy stand up routine (of course it was not p.c.)- where he talks about his mother and how she could "radar" in on what the boys were doing anywhere in the house, take off her shoe, and whizzzzz- it would sail through the house like a heat-seeking heel and WHAP! right upside the head!!
