I hope she's eighteen. I'd hate for the Feds to shut down the Becker subforum.

apparently according to lore, she was 22+ living in Brazil some years ago now and moved to Bulgaria? where they have less nets.

she'd still be making videos but someone kept hacking her so she said "screw it".

probably has 5 kids now

I agree on all points. :)
I'll be making more kitchen knives this year, and in watching (stealing ideas from :D) big name makers, one of the things I've always wondered about is that none of them seem to offer matching honing steels to go with their knives. Maybe it's just because no one uses them anymore...
I've got the stag handled one that came with Gandma's Anton Wingen carving set, but I use a cheapie Wusthof that works reasonably well. Thought you all might enjoy this; kinda funny and informative, especially towards the end when he talks about why you want your knife sharp and how to use a steel:

Don't get in on one cause it ain't no fun

Don't even need an excuse for skippin' the deuce

Don't act like a fool, like a snark trainee

Do like me and slide in on three

The set we got in Aug 2012 (JA Henckels/Zwilling Four Star) came with a very nice steel, along with kitchen shears, in addition to the knives. I have added a Henckels boning knife and carver to the set since those weren't included. But honestly, the ESEE Becker kitchen set is really a great set as well. It'll be nice to see if others are offered in addition to the two santoku, french chef and utility knives. I've mentioned a few times that after trying a set, I bought three more as Christmas gifts for family.

That's an awesome idea.
We've talked about doing cutting boards to go with knives too. It's not a big margin item, tho.

And in unrelated news...

Just finished lunch after some work out in the yard. My wife has been raising worms for the last 5 or 6 months...an interesting story that I'll save for a later date. She wanted me to build her some raised planter beds for her to fill with compost and worm castings (poop for those of you who don't know) along with peat moss and regular dirt. Got the frame built before Christmas, and finally had decent enough weather (and time) today to get it in position, line it with 1/4" hardware cloth (keeps out the moles), and start filling it with dirt. Had a 50 gallon trash can full of dirt from planting some crepe myrtles a month or two ago, but that barely scratched the surface. Looks like I need to get a half yard of regular dirt before she starts mixing in her "special dirt." The planter is 4'X8' and about 11" deep (2 times a 6" nominal board) and made from red cedar lumber to resist bugs and decay, but not leech toxins into the food like treated lumber would. I do miss the red cedar in Missouri. What they call "cedar" here in Texas is actually ashe juniper and I am allergic to the mold that grows on the bark and the pollen (along with most of the population).

Her plan is to grow vegetables and eventually laying hens to start offering fresh food from the Food Pantry at church.

Yeah the cutting board thing... too much overhead and not enough profit. I suppose a person could now and again make a full set with matching block, board, steel, chef's knife, parer, slicer, steak knives, the whole nine yards. It's hard to justify tying up that much labor and materials without knowing it's sold, though... and most people who buy handmade cutlery tend to pick and choose one a time.

I think I have a reasonably efficient way to make serrated bread knives figured out... although I don't care much for 'em myself, many people love 'em.

Outstanding  I need to get some manure tilled into my garden this month... pretty weird for a Wisconsin boy to be thinking about garden prep in January :D

Agreed. I happen to have basically free cutting board material, tho. It takes about two full man-hours to make a basic board without crazy fancy finish. Not much of a value multiplier, but I bet in some markets the combo package could fetch a premium.

Serrated, eh? They're the best thing before sliced bread. :D
I look forward to seeing that.
Heehee... how about one big 'serration' with the pointy bit in the middle of the blade. Just plop that into the crust or tomato skin and go to down. Then you just have to sharpen two shallow recurves. HA!

There you go, giving away all my secrets again :grumpy:

In on 3! Damn, I'm getting really nervous. Starting my first job tomorrow morning. I'm excited to meet a bunch of new people. People that I'll probably see more than my own family for the next...(?)...years. I grew up fast, damn. I can't quite comprehend it :)

All snarking aside, Congrats, G-shark. Welcome to the "real" world. Just be cool about it and remember the old saying that is appropriate for anytime you walk into a new position.....

It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than it is to open it and remove all doubt.

Wait until you know what's going on before trying to change the world.

Snark season is now open.

Congrats on a new start in life and a new opportunity, 'Shark. What are you moving into?
