This reminds me of a very old paddle car my dad had we got restored for him, kinda neat.

Wouldnt a sharpie mark just wipe off?

Snark: You gotta use the permanent laundry makers, duh.

non-snark: You use the Sharpie as a resist for the bits you don't want chemically etched. Results vary. I know there's some threads around here by people who've done it.

This is the snark thread!!

If you have any doubt about the sincerity of most of my posts, it is usually safe to say I am being a smart ass.

:D

LMAO, i thought maybe some chemical reaction happened that i didnt know about :)

I really wanted to do this with the 12V battery. Didnt know i needed an A/C power supply too... Not sure how to rectify that...

I plan on doing this on a bunch of knives and other metal things so i want a system that works fairly well... Man i might have to buy one of ones for sale. I see some of them have A/C and D/C but at about 100 bucks.

Does the etch-o-matic use both A/C and D/C? it looks to make a pretty dark mark... And in just seconds according to the site/video....

Upon his passing all that money went to his sons who turned out to be horrible people. Soooo all that hard work basically went for nothing.

I know a couple self-made millionaires who started with basically nothing, and are still very cool and humble. For instance... ever heard of EastBay shoe catalogs/outlets? I used to drink at a neighborhood bar with one of the guys who literally started that company out his garage, and didn't even know it for the first couple months. This was after tthe company went public and he retired at age 50 or something like that - totally set for life. You never would have guessed (I certainly didn't) that he was one of the richest men in the county just by having a few (dozen) shots and beers with him. He was just a guy who liked to catch a buzz, talk about sports and fishing, shake dice and occassionally complain about his wife nagging him :p

Their kids, however, seem to have a much higher-than-average incidence of being complete jackasses - pretty much 100%, in fact. That's not a scientific study of course, just some people I happen to know.

Anyway, I strongly suspect that might be why my great-aunt spread her money out among a whole bunch of people and organizations. Folks who are born into or come into great wealth real fast often develop... issues.

I remember hearing a news story in the last year or so about a multi-millionaire who died in the '30's and stated in his (I think "he") will that the money would be given out to all relatives after the then living relatives had died. He didn't want any of his kids or grandkids to turn into asses as a result of the money. Seems it took until a year or so ago for the last one to die and the great-grandkids or great-great-grandkids got the money then.

Yes, yes and yes. I like it very much - dead simple to use if you have good stencils to start with. Just follow the instructions, and use the electrolyte/pads etc that come with it.

Bear in mind, it's a little pricy for a hobbyist.

He didn't want any of his kids or grandkids to turn into asses as a result of the money.

If I ever wind up with a million bucks to leave my kid, it will be doled out in a trust over many years, not in one big chunk. That's no guarantee of her not becoming a jackass, but it's probably better than becoming an instant millionaire. Look at what happens to so many lottery winners... a certain percentage go completely bonkers and are broke again within a few years, often with all sorts of gambling/drug/other lifestyle problems.

I'm not exactly super concerned about that happening to me or my kid though, I'm mostly just rambling out loud :D

ha.
some adults never mature past age 7.
what a waste of everyone's time.

The guy is super talented.. just not sure why the melt down.. I know BF was a lot different in the old days, but times change.

C'mon, WW! You can make one of these things yourself for pretty cheap. Find an electronics surplus store then look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTRaAdvnnj8 or do some web searching, there are quite a few easy designs, even if it's nothing more than a powerstrip (for on/off) and a couple plug in transformers with alligator clips....good stencils are probably more important than the electronics, IMO.

Actually, a rectifier converts AC to DC, so rectifying it wouldn't help. You need an inverter to convert DC into AC, so you need to invert it. hahahahahahahahahaha

Sorry for the electrical engineering joke... :D

I want one like in that video. Thats sweet.

I have seen a few designs and schematics but really i dont want to mess around wiring some stuff up when i really dont understand it LMAO

Can't spell geek without EE. I have an EE degree, and I still thought that was a terrible joke ;).

WW - I'll email you or call you later. It is really simple, no soldering skill required. Gotta go pick up my little one...
