I'll assume ALL of you have heard/seen this before, "dude, you have got to see my AWESOME knife". Then you see it and don't know what to say because it it the worst piece of (bleep) that you have ever seen...
I have plenty of examples, but I'll just mention the one that just happened.
So this guy at work has been telling me about his BEAUTIFUL knife for a week now, and finally remembered to bring it in. It was a horrible Chinese copy of a 110. Incredibly loose and didn't even close all of the way. Not to mention there was NO edge on it...
I'm sure you guys have some funny stories. Let's hear 'em!

I remember this one time I was on a forum, and this guy couldn't wrap his head around the fact that not everyone needs/wants to carry a $100-$1000 knife. I was shocked! It was as if he was too good for people with cheap knives, and found them to be "less of a person"...

Grow up dude:rolleyes: What if I said you were "lesser" for not wearing a suit and tie everyday?

For the hell of it, what knife do you carry?

Funny story! Yeah, some are very proud of less than quality knives they own. Good post!

Damn dude. That was rough.. he's not less if a person for that - it just wasn't the AWESOME knife he said it was.
My EDC? sometimes it's a Sebenza and sometimes it's a $30 flash 1..

And you point is what?

To him, it probably was awesome...

I wear Walmart jeans and carry a Rockstead. If someone commented on how my clothing "wasn't awesome" I'd be offended. I don't need designer clothes; much like your "friend" doesn't need a designer knife...

Me point is... Just kidding - go find someone else to argue with as I'm not responding to you again.

Then respond to me, because I agree with Blues Bender. If the guy loves his awesome knife, just hand it back to him and say "Yea, it is a nice knife!"

If you're an arrogant prick to everyone who doesn't like what you like, then you will live a bad life.

I told him it was very nice. I just didn't mean it.
I just wanted to hear funny stories - not argue.

Okay real story I and a few guys were given a cheap rescue knife similar to a triage. Well a few days later a few of us were around and tried to cut a seat belt but the belt cutter (cut out in handle to expose a portion of blade) wouldn't cut the seat belt after a few tries I used my yojimbo and cut the belt the other guys were like wow how did that cut so easily. I didn't say anything just not sure it must be just be sharp.

I'd imagine that's what he did. I can understand being a bit put off by the tone of the original post but this reaction is over the top IMHO. Why are we so quick to vilify these days any time we get the chance? What is the goal? To show the op that his thought process might need to be reviewed or to feel superior? If its the former then a gentle reminder spoken out of kindness might be more effective than an angry condemnation of moral superiority. Not trying to give a sermon here, just trying to bring a different perspective. Hopefully I am not exhibiting the very behavior I am pointing out...because that has a funny way of happening to me. hehe :)

To the op, I'll tell you a quick story. I would say that I have been a "knife guy" since I was a very young boy. In my junior high days, a friend went down to Mexico and came back with several of those hollow handled survival knives. You know, the ones made out of pot metal with a compass in the screw on cap? Lol, we thought those were the coolest things EVER!! And I can guarantee you that I was showing them to people around me extolling their virtues as the worlds greatest survival knife. Yup, that happened, but I don't think it meant that I wasn't a knife guy at the time. It just meant that I didn't know much. Part of that was because I was young but part was because I had no money. There were some amazing knives available back then but I never gave much attention to them as their price made them completely unrealistic to even consider. It is human nature to tell ourselves that the best that we have (or the best we can afford) is "the best", and often times perception becomes reality. That can be viewed as delusion or a positive attitude, depending on your perspective. :)

Just tell him it was a Schrade, you'll be his best friend after that and everyone around here will just be in love with you.

Good post. I have an employee who routinely buys very cheap Chinese knockoff knives. He has me sharpen them for him, which I don't mind, and we talk knives a bit when I do. He's learning more and more and I'm planning on finishing it up by gifting him a solid folder at Christmas in addition to his bonus. Since he does hunt I'm eyeing the Ultimate Hunter right now.

Regardless if he told the guy "It is a nice knife," he's on Bladeforums mocking him for thinking it was a good knife. Rather than poking fun at people, educate them.

yeah but this is a forum for knives and it's funny for us because we see things totally different. It's like how people who are huge into sports ask you your favorite team and you say some generic answer and because they are having a good season and sports fans laugh at you. It's not like we are insulting that specific person. It's just a perspective thing. It's funny because we see it differently and to us we are more interested in the specifics and details of knives like steel and handle material. It's totally different from being a snob in someones face and telling them that what they have is inferior in our opinion and insulting them. We are just commenting amongst our fellow knife nuts.

The line between comedy and cruelty is always pretty thin, but non-knife people do get some funny ideas. I think the thing to do is support their first steps, and chuckle among ourselves later, as we're doing here.
A friend showed me his new set of kitchen knives once, and instead of saying "nice thin blades", as I should have, I focussed on the quarter tangs rivetted to softwood handles, and was struck dumb.
Some time later, I was watching a pirate movie with another friend, who whispered, "you're going to love this!" A character opened his cloak to reveal a harness stuffed with 50-cent novelty catalog throwing knives. I still don't know what reaction she was expecting, but I'm sure she was disappointed.

I have to agree with Surfgringo here....I don't think its meant to be "mocking" to that person. It's just a poking of fun because it's something we see differently. And while educating people is great and I'm all for it...It's not practical. There's plenty of people that don't want to know and would be more insulted if we tried to explain what to look for in a knife. It's like parent's talking about funny things their kids do. While they are laughing at whatever the kid did they aren't saying anything necessarily bad about them. At least that's how I see it.

But to respond to the OP...

When I was younger my friend who lived across town got a hold of a cheap crappy swing guard switchblade and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I bought it off him for like $10 and it didn't fire all the way out half the time but you couldn't have convinced me it wasn't badass haha.

If someone asks me what I think of their knife I tell them the truth, I point out the differences between a $5 jar knife to even a Rough Rider out a Sebenza depending on who I'm talking to.

My job is to educate not ridicule, I have a cheap Spyderco Bug I keep on a chain around my neck, is always on me and probably gets used more than most would think. It's a cheap knife that's well made and I point that out when talking to new enthusiast. I don't want to drive collectors away, I wanna bring them in. Who knows they may be the next AG Russell. :)

It's kind of like when someone with a stock Nissan Sentra tells me how fast it is. I have a Mustang GT with engine work - I never tell these people that their car is a slow piece of bleep. I say, " oh cool".

People think different things are cool. I read in the paper this morning that the 30th annual Novelty Salt & Pepper Shaker Club convention is meeting in Arlington, Va. this weekend. Please note, the "Novelty" club, not just the plain old S&P shaker club. Members from 5 countries are expected to attend. Some will be selling parts of their collections. Maybe a lucky few will find their grail.
