Hi

Has anyone tried the look alikes - me too knives on the bay? They look like Spydies but there not.

In particular I am looking at one of the "Navy" versions. Heck for a couple of ten spots might be worth a try

compression lock
440 steel
and leaf like blade

Any thoughts?

.

I always stick with the real deal. If I wanted to go economy, I'd grab a Byrd or Tenacious.

I agree - but for my son - who will most likely loose the dang thing it is a thought. And given the price point of a real one - I am thinking about it.

But just wondering if anyone has purchased one just to see what they are like - for a low priced knife

{edited - sounded harsher than I intended}

:)

I say support the real company and don't encourage people to make more fakes. A lot of the Byrd knives can be had for around $20, so I would recommend one of them.

Yes - yes - yes - its good to support companies - but as I am not on the payroll I like to consider alternatives as well

However I am just wondering how good the competition is - people say its garbage - but has anyone bought one to see?

I am sure it is not up to the standards of Spyderco - however for a lower tier alternative.....?

If you want to inquire about the quality of the fakes out there stealing money from Spyderco, I suggest you do so in the General forum. People here tend to frown on the practice of supporting thieves.

If you want an affordable Spydie, try the Byrd brand of knives; they're Spyderco's economy line. Or you could go for the Tenacious or Persistence, which are affordable Spyderco brand knives.

Ok - I am not trolling just wondering if anyone had tried one of these knives. I mean - how else would one know?

But cool - will inquire elsewhere

Thanks

There is a sticky at the top of the forum, that should have been a dead give away.

The thing I'd worry about losing with a cheap knock-off is a finger or some other irreplaceable part of your son's body. :thumbdn:  :(

Just the costs for treating an unnecessary injury that results from a cheap knife that fails and injures your son alone would be many, many times the additional cost of a real Spyderco or other quality knife (vs. a cheap rip-off)....forget the fact that most of those injuries are actually life-long, since nerve damage usually doesn't heal completely.

Yes - but not a lot of actual hand on reviews. Just a good amount of piling on (fixed it) over the thought of someone copying the standard

Not trying to step into the poop nor stir up the believers- just was curious

Again - I will search elsewhere. But if I get one I will let you know and give a full hands on report:D:thumbup:

(edited due to being tired and warn out after a day cleaning the yard - regrets:thumbup:)

You might just get your son a Byrd. You can get one for $20. Better in every way than the knock-off.

I haven't given you a micron of vitriol. Cheap tools are cheap for good (bad, actually) reasons. It's your son you're talking about... :( :thumbdn: :barf:

No - please - I am sorry if the timing of the posts mislead - I was referring to the sticky on the fakes. Which I feel is spot on (perhaps vitriol was too strong - but it seems like many just say Oh ya - thats bad - without having any knowledge concerning the matter)- for fakes posing as real. Me toos (ok copies made) might be another matter.

And I do appreciate your well founded concern for the functioning of the knife. That would be a concern. And that is why I am asking if anyone had a hands on experience with one of these "me toos"

I mean no harm walking into this house - and do not intend to insult anyone here - just asking questions

But sincerely - thank you. :)

I have handled the Navy knives and they are crap. I have bought other cheap knives and they malfunction at a high rate, especially when they are dropped on hard surfaces. I would worry about a knife malfunction and a finger injury, if it was my son. I have the Byrd Cara Cara, I paid 23.00. Decent sturdy knife. :)

TurnerIII, it is best to use the General Knife Discussion forum when researching multiple brands, and not to put those questions in a manufacturer's own forum.

Those other knives are often discussed, with less acrimony or defensiveness, in a general setting.

Of course I did. I am a responsible adult. ( ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha )

Anyway, he wasn't being antagonistic, so ... why should I? :)
