Non Spyderco - me toos

Of course I did. I am a responsible adult. ( ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha )

Anyway, he wasn't being antagonistic, so ... why should I? :)

You are correct - and I stand corrected.

My regrets to any offended by my binning up another brand on this board

However, I do appreciate the information given to me by several posts. Thank you:thumbup:

TurnerIII, it is best to use the General Knife Discussion forum when researching multiple brands, and not to put those questions in a manufacturer's own forum.

Those other knives are often discussed, with less acrimony or defensiveness, in a general setting.

I'm glad you understand. I don't step foot in the Busse forum(s), but I can well imagine the response I'd get if I asked in there how these knives compared to the real deal.:D

Why in the world would you put yourself, or a family member, at risk by using an inferior product? 'Buy quality and only cry once' a wise friend once told me...those are words to live by.

$20 will get you a tenacious if you're lucky, a cara cara 2 for sure (cheap endura), and many other spyderco/byrd knives. The 440 steel... is probably 440A, and human flesh is harder than that steel. :P

One night I had had a few beers and was perusing ebay. Caught what I thought was a Spyderco Caly III right as the auction was ending. Threw a bid down real quick and won it. Much to my chagrin (after looking harder) I realized that I had bought a fake. Too late, damage done. At least it was under 10 bucks which in hindsight is about 10 times what it was worth. A complete POS. I was whittling through some wood with it and the pivot broke and the blade came loose. Didn't get cut or anything but showed me real quick what kind of (no) quality it was made out of.

I have one of those Navy Lil'T clones I got from pure curiosity. It is decently well made. However, I never used it (and never will) so I can't tell how reliable it is.
But make no mistake: although it may look like a Lil'T clone, it is very different from the original in many aspects. And I'm not talking about the materials used - which is the obvious thing.
The Navy is much heavier, probably due to the thick ful liners. No nested liners, like the Lil'T has. Also, the G-10 scales (which I'm not very sure it's really G-10, BTW) lack the beautiful sculpture there is at the original.
Oh, and don't try to mount the clip for tip down carry, the clip screws are too long and will squeeze the blade till it won't open or close at all. There is a bit of bladeplay both laterally and vertically.
As I said, if you compare it to the original, there is definitely no match, but for a 10$ knife it's not that bad. If you want specifically a Lil'T get the original, I'm pretty sure the clone won't satisfy you.
But if you just want a good, affordable knife, better buy an entry level Spyderco - it will serve you well for many years.

I agree - but for my son - who will most likely loose the dang thing it is a thought. And given the price point of a real one - I am thinking about it.

But just wondering if anyone has purchased one just to see what they are like - for a low priced knife

{edited - sounded harsher than I intended}

:)

Interesting values you want to teach your son.

I taught mine to value the real deal and not to go with fakes and rip-offs.

If you need "less expensive", Byrd is there to fulfill that need.

If you want to inquire about the quality of the fakes out there stealing money from Spyderco, I suggest you do so in the General forum. People here tend to frown on the practice of supporting thieves.
Ok - I am not trolling

Sure doing a good impersonation of it.
Going into a manufacturers forum and asking about the quality of ripoffs of that brand seems at best questionable.

what will you tell your son if the knife fails and cuts the crap out of him? that you are sorry but you just wanted to save a few dollars? maybe if you buy him a good knife and tell him its not JUNK FROM CHINA he might take better care of it :D.

No matter how polite a name you give them, they are still use the trademarked Spyderhole opener without permission. I won't even patronize a certain US manufacturer who has done that.

Yeah, I'm done with this thread, but I would have had a lot more to say. :barf: And I haven't even touched the issue of theft, and those who support theft. :barf: :barf: :barf:

Hi Turner,

I guess the real rub is that we spend money on attorney's to fight these copycats and when you spend money buying them, you are supporting their theft.

Our Chinese friends also use extensively the axis lock, probably just to be even ;)
