How does this trading work?

1. Do folks use some sort of 3rd party "escrow"? ..to prevent scamming?

2. Or does the first guy to ship just keep fingers crossed?

Just check in the GBU forum to make sure the person has had good trades before and email the person with all questions you may have ie mail carrier, type of service, be sure to get a signature, etc...

As already stated it's based on trust check GBU and how long the person has been around and how much they have posted.

Like other have said it is based on trust. If you have never had a trade before or of you are new, you may be asked to ship frist. If you are dealing with a long time member that has done trades before, your chance of getting scammed is about as low as it can be. There are a bunch of guys I have done deals with that I know beyond question I can trust.

95% of my deals, I ship before I get the other person's item. I have only asked a few guys to ship first and they understood since you have to earn trust. When I was a noob, I had to ship first for most of my trades but after I got some good feedback, people began to trust me. Fools! Little do they know my long term plan is to set up an account here, gain trust for ten years with dozens of other members and then, when they least expect it, I am going to scam someone on a trade worth at least $30.00. I know ten years is a long time to wait to scam someone for $30.00 but a perfect crime is worth waiting for! Just a few more years.

i generally ship simultaneously myself, rarely do i require getting the payment/item 1st, have occasionally though, but as others have stated it works on trust, i have done dozens of sales/swaps/etc and all has gone well for me, no problems at all, i would be cautious with folks with low post counts (not that they are bad folks) just because they havent been around a while, if someone has 1K or 3K posts they arent gonna disappear all of a sudden (usually, anyway).

my wife was amazed that rip offs were so uncommon,

FWIW i have done swaps involving thousands of bucks, the 1st time i did it i admit to some nervousness, but most of the folks on this board are scrupulously honest imho,

Most of the time trades between two long standing members are shipped at the same time.In all the deals I have done here I have only asked once or twice for the other person to ship first, when I first joined I offered several times to ship first and no one took me up on it.
Great place here.

Thirty seems high.

I am already planning on the deal that involves a SAK Cadet, that'll be my epitaph here.

"The Chef, swindler of SAK Cadets."

In my experience, you have to race to mail payment before a BFC member with good reviews ships! At least twice items have been shipped before I could get payment out. I will try and emulate this in any dealings I have on the forum. Good form to all on my good list!

Hehehe, it's pretty wierd isn't it? I think the reason it all works is because of the time investment. I mean, it takes some hours to post here even 50 times!

So who wants to blow that investment by scamming somebody and getting booted off the forum?

Or even better, anybody who's shelled out their hard-earned dollars for a membership here sure isn't going to get himself kicked off if he can help it.

I don't know. You can see that it works by comparing
a) the number of for sale/for trade threads here, which pretty much all end in a transaction... about a jillion

to

b)the number of posts in GB&U- much fewer, I don't know 1% as many

to

c)the number of negative posts in GB&U, maybe 5% of the 1%, probably fewer than that.

Which says to me the vast majority of transactions come off without anything out of the ordinary happening. A few of them are great. And a tiny, tiny, tiny number go wrong. But even then, those often get fixed after someone complains. Sometimes it's just "I'm really sorry my mom just died and I haven't been on the computer, it's on the way now." I'd even say most of the negative threads are about websites or vendors, rather than BFC member.

I guess it just works :)

Thanks for the informative answers folks :o)
Will check out the Good, Bad, Ugly thread..

..apologies if this was posted in wrong place.
Mods.. go ahead and close/move this thread if it's in the way, sorry.
Thanks again.

its been a few years after my first trade here on BF and literally hundreds followed. Have I had problems? yes, one or two, but too small for me to care, while the excellent trades I got involved in were so many to count or remember. I have made many friends in the process and feel really good to be able to be a member of a place with so many great, trustworthy guys.
By the way, right now I have four trades in process.
Give it a try - you will like it!

Himmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Perhaps the mods need to CORRECT the masses for flagrantly not following THE RULES!!!

Help Commissars!! The RULES! THE RULES!!!
