Noob. With, why should I not buy a Native/Sage?

WallyWorlds carried the Native 4 in S30V & FRN briefly some years ago - for <$40. I love my Benchmades, but that N4 was hard to dislodge as an EDC. Despite a lot of tough use - including a reshaped tip - it still works great and is as tight as it's brother here - a brand new one bought as a backup. I may get to use the backup one day - but not any time soon. Tough little knife. I bought a Sharpmaker to re-edge it years ago - it has - several times. It's a great/safe handfit in my medium+ sized mitts. My pair of N4s and the Sharpmaker are all I have from Spyderco.

Hi guys. Another day done.
Thanks for all the input.

@KYenglish. You're so right. Anything more menacing than a plastic spork here and it makes the local news lol..
Leegomery eh. One of my best friends lives in Aintree close..

@Bladechick777. Thanks very much. I did look at the Sage 2 and I prefer the CF for a gents folder. Sorry... Now flaming titanium... Mmmmm. Just youtubed it... I like but I'd probably turn my knife into something that looks like it was welded to your fender at some time in its life and fell off!! I'm that good with DIY...

@Stainz. I see many people who've had a Native keep the trend.. That speaks loads doesn't it.

I'm so 50/50 at the moment.

I'm going to you tube some more after ive walked me dawg as she's whinning for a wee.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post. I'm very grateful for your thoughts. Just gotta sort mine out lol.

Regards. Steve.

Haha. Yeah thanks for that redfeenix lol
Just as one thing seems sorted up pops another contender. Mmmm looks nice but I'd be afraid to use its so good looking!
I like your analogy too. I can see what you mean re sports car. What are us guys like with our toys and cars.. My other half loves boots! I think she's crazy haha. Who needs 15 pairs of walking boots? But knives, now there's reasons for having a good few ;)

I do like the Sage. I think Spyderco hit a home run with the design. I wish I disliked one more than the other!

I've put it to SWMBO and see what she produces for me Burfday. Eeeee I can't wait.

Thanks too for the welcome red. I hope that in time I shall be able to help others here rather than just tap brains.

So far I've got my nano oil 5 and 10 coming from StClairs US as was cheaper than buying in UK! Figure that!
Got a 3" wide new leather strip albeit 30" long, haha, from a saddle makers nearby. And some chromium oxide powder for polishing. Next is the sharpmaker. This is from learning from the forum. I may not need it all yet... But!...
And then as you put it above..... I'm gonna end up spending and collecting aren't I... I can see it starting already. I have the bug, started with a Spyder. :D

Cheers Redfeenix.

Steve.

Trust me, you made an amazing choice. I'd be really happy with the Sage as my first knife :). I just hope you also see quality in 'value' knives because they do have some amazing features to them. Let us know what you finally end up with in the end :)...and yes put some pics on here, you deserve to show off!!!

If you can find one, get the Native with carbon fiber. I kept that over the Sage 1. Just felt a lot better.

If you want to look an a non-locking blade... the Spyderco UKPK is hard to beat. You can get it in 3 different blade shapes, 3 different steels, and 4 different handle materials.
Blade shapes:
Leaf shape
Drop point
Rescue - this is full serrated though.

Handle materials:
FRN
G-10
Carbon fiber
Titanium

Steels:
Gin-1
CTS-BD1
s30v

I miss having one.

Hi guys.

Thanks redfeenix. I shall post as soon as I get. Getting itchy fingers. And yes I've been looking at many a type of blade at various prices and value.. Im just being picky on my first buy :)

Asbob, I was looking for a N4 CF but none around here in the UK :( but thanks for the heads up.

Bladechick777. You stole my thoughts. LoL. After I have my first "got to have" knife I shall save for a UK PK so I can carry in normal places without causing a mass panic. It's a shame I haven't got the money right now as an online seller has the Ti version for sale at £50.00 off. Booooo.

Well I keep changing my mind so I think SWMBO has taken the situation in her own hands to surprise me. Until I change my mind again haha. Watch this space lol

Cheers guys. Hope you've had a better one today.

Regards. Steve.

Me again. Just thought to ask you this please......

If you have the option on your knife to carry tip up or down. Which way is the pocket clip more comfortable for you when holding the handle and using your knife?

Bit random but just wondering.

I do so wish somewhere near had some I could play with...

Cheers again...

Steve.

It really depends on your preference.
I prefer tip up carry. That's how I carry every knife I own. I just find that way more comfortable and convenient.
It's all personal preference really.

The simple solution to your problem is to buy both! :D
Then you can rotate them for your daily.

God you people
I just bought a sage 1
First spyderco
Used to hate them but I just love the carbon fiber
Also because I recommended the PM2 to my dad and got does it hold an edge

Hi Jake.

Cheers Bladechick777.

And... I'd love both but can't yet as not got enough spondoolics :(

Cheers everyone.

You really have me pondering steve

The two are very comparable to me

except two VERY small differences pertaining to personal preference

1. I LOVE carbon fiber and think it looks amazing
2. I think the pocket clip is a tad more stealth for the workplace, I'm referencing how it could look like a paperclip

that being said I do see an N5 in my future.

I don't know when you are getting your knife but once mine comes in I'll report back first impressions if you'd like!

Hi there Jake. Haha I do too much pondering lol..
That's brilliant yes please. Id like to hear your first impressions...
Like you I like the look of CF for a work place, and I deal with the public a fair bit too... So keeping things smart and minimal helps loads.
If I got the N5, (as I'm eager to try this new back lock), I'd probably get aramid hybrid scales and a STR deep carry type clip in blue as we now have to wear jeans as part of our uniform.... It's wether to spend a fair whack or have it mostly done for me in the Sage1..
But that N5 keeps calling!!

Thanks for the reply.
Steve.

Shrewsbury , you are kidding me Shrewsbury, I used to live in Telford and have family in Shrewsbury. Anyway, that was just strange for me for a second. As for the knife choice, I like the idea behind the Sage knives, homages to different innovations and makers, so I might be tempted to go that direction. The lockback with the Native is a two hand opener/closer if it matters and the carbon fiber of the sage 1, for me, would be a preference over the Native scales (g10 on the 5 if memory serves)

Good luck and welcome to the forum

I can open and close my native 5 with one hand. not sure what you mean its a two hand opener

Welcome to the forum. You'll likely receive many replies stating both knives are great and indeed they are. Both knives will hold up well to any task. Both knives have good lockup, blade steel and scales. Swapping out the scales on a native 5 with scales from cuscadi will make that a $230+ knife if that's a consideration. The Sage is a perfect Gent's knife with a 3" blade. Carry's great in the pocket with the CF scales and wire clip. I think the liner lock is very sufficient as well. Being abroad you may not care where either knife is made but some do. I like the blade shape better on the Native but the jimping is dynamite on the Sage. The only thing I could nit-pick about is the lack of a boye dent on the native but some folks were glad to see it go away.

I'm sure none of this helps!

how do I go about getting these custom scales for my Native 5, I tried googling and found a site but didn't see the native 5, and the site I found didn't seem to allow me to purchase anything even though there was a shop button, it was not a US site so was difficult to figure out.

Hi there. www.cuscadi.de is the website... In German. There is a little English available to help with ordering.
The way it works is you browse their site and find a type of material or finish that you like including glow spots, glow scales and backspaces if you wish and if that suits your knife Email them and they get back to you with some ideas and prices. Luke is the chap that replied to me in good English and is very helpful and patient. After payment the scales take aprox 1 to 2 weeks to produce. I did like the wood finishes but I'm afraid that for edc the wood would wear in rough jeans.
I bagsied the aramid hybrid which is black carbon with a silver weave aramid layer which gives a smooth yet bumpy carbon fiber. Sounds like the sage CF maybe.
Luke can take a couple of days to get back to you, but I've found that if you reply to him as soon as an email is sent to you, he's probably at his PC and he replies very quickly.

Hope that helps.

Now a question for you my friend. I've seen videos of the Native in which the chap may flick the blade out and shake it back in. Is this something you have tried? I don't want a toy but sometimes it's nice to flick a blade out or in.
I've never had either so don't know how a back lock feels vs liner lock.
Thanks in advance.

Steve.

'closer' might have been a better word, still I think of a lockback type as more two handed.

Honestly I was thinking about knife laws which are strick in England and it might be easier to explain a 'two hand' knife better the a one hand knife. its been a very long time since I checked out english laws on the subject but I seem to remember something about that in there.
