Noob. With, why should I not buy a Native/Sage?

'closer' might have been a better word, still I think of a lockback type as more two handed.

Honestly I was thinking about knife laws which are strick in England and it might be easier to explain a 'two hand' knife better the a one hand knife. its been a very long time since I checked out english laws on the subject but I seem to remember something about that in there.

That's a good point. It's still the same over here. 3" blade or less and no lock knives unless an absolutely good reason. i.e. use for work. On way to work and no other way to get there. Only parliament can overturn this now as was thrown out of crown and high courts.. And do they wanna know?....erm...NO! Booooo...
Nice train of thought though.

Steve.

I love my Native. No experience with the Sage. The Native carries very easy, also very easy one hand opening and closing. I think you would like it.

The Native 5 is just too heavy for the size. I used to have a Sage 2 and found it too big in the pocket height wise from spine to back when closed. The Benchmade 707 is a nice elegant folder in that price range. Other than that, I'd go with the Native 4 for bang for buck, though not much to look at.

Thanks chaps.

I did look at the 707 and after lots of pondering I thought it would be too small, albeit it is on my future list which SWMBO is ignoring at the moment lol.

Good point though Hawk45. As I've no way of trying before buying I've shaped some wood to roughly the sizes of the knives to see how they may carry. I think I'm ok in my work jeans and dress strides.
Thanks for pointing it out. Weight is a different matter though...

Steve.

I adore the spyderco native 5. Other then spyderco balisongs, it is my favorite spyderco knife. Everything about it is just made right, and I have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

Hi guys. Thanks again for your input.
This may seem a silly question to ask, but for you who own a Native 5, how smooth is the mechanism?
ie how much pressure is needed to move the knife? Is it anything like a Swiss army knife resistance?
I know it's a numpty question but I've never used one and can't try before I buy.

Just trying to get an idea in my lil head as to what to expect .....

Thanks everyone Regards. Steve.

Hi Hawk45.
Thanks for that. I know I've just got to buy them ALL lol.

Oh the missus just loves my new passion!!

Cheers. Steve

Just wanted to pop back in
Got my sage 1 in over the weekend and love it so far
I'm very critical and everything looked perfect to me
I'm gonna carry it another week or so and I'll post up something more in depth

The F&F on the Sage 1 is amazing for a 100 dollar knife.

Hi Jake.
I use my 4S or pad all the time, they're just too convenient....
You're a star thanks for your first thoughts on your new knife. I know it will live up to expectations on its reputation alone.
I know I want the Sage1, it's just I keep thinking of pimping that N5 with aramid and deep carry clip. Oooh.
No good I want both. Lol.

Thanks again Jake. I look forward to your findings.... Happy carrying.

Regards Steve.

I agree, I will probably eventually own all of them as well. but I love the Native 5. Love the look of the steel lockback spine

Hi guys thought I'd give you a slow update.
As its me Burfday this Saturday I had orders from SWMBO to make my bloody mind up or get nothing!

So... I, or SHE, has just placed an order for a N5.. Had an email to say dispatched too, within 7 mins so fair play to the company we ordered it from.... Sorry don't know if I can name them in the forum.

Now why an N5 I hear you ask!

I really want the Sage1 and i know its a superb blade, but I think I may be able to
a) pimp the scales on the N5 to aramid and CF at a later date.
b) get a deep carry Ti clip and flame it to make it dark-ish blue. The one I've seen is a split type like the BM split arrow type.
I really want to try the new pivot bush and lock back.
That's IF I get on with it. The chaps we ordered it from have a 7 day cooling off period so things may change...

I'll keep you all updated to let you know what I think of it vs my eager expectations.

In the meantime may I thank you all for your most valuable thoughts and experiences to help me decide.

The Spyder that bit me has got me now...

Kind regards. Steve.

Hi again guys..
Ok so SWMBO gave me a taster today and I was allowed to play with the N5 for 10 mins ahead of Saturday.

First thoughts....

"it's smaller than I thought".. Was the first thing! As I had read many times before, but it's a good size.
WOW!...
Blade is spot on.
Fit n finish very good.
Pocket clip sticks in my hand when held tight. So maybe tip down is more comfy?!
Lock release is stiff and feels gritty. Like metal on metal which is to be expected I guess as the lock bar against liners is very tight. I also guess that this would ease as they wear together.
The blade drops and swings freely once that lock release is pushed right in, i mean right in!, and will fall to closed, but that takes some effort due to strength of spring vs stiffness. Again that may ease..
Excellent knife and very impressed.
Sharp..very and it's drawn first blood lol.. And cuts curly Q's very easy.
Easy to deploy and almost flickable.
Perfect size once you get over how small a package it is.

These are my first thoughts and not criticising its build or ability at all.

I'm wondering if the lock will ease on its own or whether polishing and lubing it would help.

I shall post my second thoughts after a day or so if I'm allowed to play lol.

Thanks and regards. Steve.

Hi red thanks mate. Sorry for the late reply ive been so so busy with work and stuff.

Right. I did indeed get the N5 and I have to admit its a perfect size and super super sharp!
Blade was awesome. Yes I said was didn't I!

I found that the spring was pushed up tight against the liner inside, so with very careful prising with a Swiss army blade I moved it away and hey presto no more stiff lock bar... Great..
The blades movement became very gritty which I'm sure would have worked itself out, but the one thing that put me off was the lock!
After just a few days, when the blade was locked, the lock bar had dropped a little bit.
Now I don't know if that's normal but when I moved the bar with my thumb at the boye end, the blade had movement.
I mean barely moving that bar. If I brought it up to the liner top the blade rattled!

I thought it probably hasn't got any more tollerance left for any more wear...
Maybe....no probably wrong, but it put me off.
Shame as I liked the way I could grip the knife with thumb and middle finger, then press the lock and the blade would drop to close. So easy.
And it flicked out, not that that's my thing.

So I'm now the proud owner of a Sage1. Nice... But I do like that N5 a LOT... And it was way sharper than the Sage1..

Birthday was good ta, albeit older a crankier. :o

I'm looking at getting an Edge pro apex now...eeeeek.. Lol

Thanks for all the help you've all given. Both knives are awesome. I really appreciate all your posts.

Regards. Steve.
